[A masked man in stained robes stands before a dense wall of almost unnaturally healthy rose bushes. The view sways slightly, as his Omen's attention drifts in and out.]

Greetings to friends and strangers alike. It is so good to be among you, alive and whole again. [The man makes a slight bow, a bitter edge to his voice quickly replaced by an audible smile.] I am Varré, surgeon and former guide to the lost. Now, I am among the uninitiated in this land's secrets.

But I do bring a gift from my homeland, and from my Lord. Thanks to His blessing, roses bloom in Lumenwood.

[A flurry of motion, and the Omen lands on one of the stems, causing a velvety red rose to sway under its weight. At this distance, it fills half the view. Varré turns to address his audience, voice brimming with pride.]

They drink the blood from the soil, and transform its power into beauty and medicinal strength.

As a former guardian of the Rose Church, I am pleased to offer you all these beloved flowers and their refined extracts, at a price equal to the cost of their manufacture. These preparations can stanch bleeding, drink up rot from unclean wounds, clear excess blood collecting within a patient, and more besides.

And roses that have drunk sleeper blood take on beautiful new properties. By the grace of a Pthumerian I've yet to learn the name of, my own blood spilled by senseless violence has produced a bloom of vileblood roses.

[The view turns, revealing a gently rustling stem of pale roses, edged with streaks of green and pink.]

They've proven invaluable in dulling the pain of the suffering. But with these roses still so rare and fed by my blood alone, I'm afraid I can't part with much. My own patients require their service.

[The omen turns back to Varré.]

I would, of course, welcome the aid of any Sleepers willing to donate blood to such a beautiful cause. You would be compensated, deservedly. And any who wish to propagate the roses, do come see me. I would be pleased to furnish you with all the tools necessary to do so. These are blessings to be had by all.

What 'tools' are necessary to propagate these roses of yours?

Knowledge, more than anything. They are quite delicate and reluctant to flower, without proper understanding of their needs.

Which are? Besides, evidently, blood, which is in no shortage of supply.

[anything that could soak up blood pollution in the soil would be wholeheartedly embraced by trench's agricologists–so why is this man selling potions on the street? and bloodstained robes aren't exactly reassuring on a blood minister, when their repeated exposure to blood pollution can leave them corrupted if untreated. and she has read about the shadowbinders of asshai, who wear masks and perform dangerous magic (although it didn't actually say what the magic was, exactly).

but sansa has a soft spot for roses, and is eager to implement anything that could cleanse the soil. perhaps this man simply doesn't know who to talk to about propagating his roses. sansa is careful to hide her skepticism when she speaks.]

What you describe could be a great boon to Trench. There are doubtless skilled agricologists in Feed and Ache that should be glad to help you propagate your roses.

I'm afraid I'm very ignorant in these matters, but I should be interested in growing them myself, if it can be taught.

Does this typically work? Just out and out asking for blood?

It seems to be effective--But I'm still learning the ways of this place. Should I be conniving and furtive about it instead?

No, I'm just curious if I works. I've never just outright asked for blood but I've never needed it.

How many different blood types do you think you'll get? Lots of people from different worlds here.

Oh, it is so heartening to be met with enthusiasm. [This city might be more dangerous than he'd first thought, but there are people that are trying very hard to make it worth the trouble.] Come to Lumenwood, and I can provide you with seeds and enough to germinate them.

Coldblood will certainly be an interesting challenge. How to keep the roots from freezing, I wonder?

Cut flowers could certainly take it up--cold water can be invigorating for them. Perhaps that would be the place to start.

[Not to worry. Quite a lot of the blood's his own--by the time he'd revived, it had become almost indelible, despite the water-repellent oils he'd worked into his uniform.]

Indeed, I would happily share with them. These are the first I planted, before I became more thoroughly acquainted with the senseless violence our fellow Sleepers can inflict.

[And there's evidence of the wounds he received--not on his skin, of course, all that's quite hidden. But the leather shirt beneath his wrap has been repaired in many places, stab holes stitched closed with cord.] I've only just recovered, and they grew quite well in my absence. Lumenwood has been kind to them.

[He stands a little straighter, removing some of the slump that had worked its way into his shoulders.] And I'm certain the roses will be equally kind, for one who seeks to learn. Have you grown any roses before?

To be daring can be a virtue.

[Normally he'd be quite discrete about it. But why should he be? This city is a place where blood magic may be practiced openly.]

Trench may take its Sleepers from many strange lands, but all arrive with blood remade by their time at sea. I've read of several types, though I've no notion of whether more might be hiding amongst us. No matter the outcome, it will be enlightening.

There's no blood too much for them, and they'll not complain if it falls on their leaves. But wet them down with water, and they'll rot within days. And the soil too--outside deeply infused land or the care of a particularly zealous donor, it will need amending with fish or bone meal. And even then, it will not flower without sufficient sacrifice.

I always have room for a few more things in the greenhouse and garden. And have a variety of roses and other flowers already growing as well.

Your inquiry is fascinating. As someone relatively new to blood magic- I would like to know how you are able to construct these roses. Is it simply a matter of supplying blood to the flower- or is there more to the method?

My, it is good to see such enthusiasm. Come to Lumenwood--follow the main road. You'll see the roses soon enough.

Do you have a supply of vileblood to feed variant seedlings?

I think there's a more pertinent question: What worries you so, to inquire so persistently after a stranger's choices?

Oh, how wonderful. Though I've heard most other plants fare poorly in bloody soil--you may have to separate them from the rest of your garden.

Your is much appreciated. But if you wish to grow any vileblood roses yourself, do save it for them. The soil must be properly enriched to ensure their health and a full bloom.

He's fine. There was an incident on the fifth of last month that resulted in his temporary death, but as you can see he's back to business as usual.

They're uncommonly lively here. I don't know if it's thanks to the quality of the blood, or the Pthumerian that rendered assistance.

I've healed. I suppose I should have heeded your warnings--a whole life spent in the Lands Between, and then murdered within a month in Trench? Oh, I'd grown too trusting.

There's magic in their properties, but none required for their 'construction'--their seeds arrived with me, and they germinated quite happily in Lumenwood. The dear things simply won't grow without sufficient blood. If you wish to grow them yourself, come to my surgery. These seeds are a gift to any who can care for them.

Your question does inspire curiosity, however. This land's native blood magic is quite versatile. What might its concerted power create from these blessed flowers, I wonder?

It was a difficult time for many of us, but whatever it was that made people so cross seems to be gone this month. I'm afraid I have little experience with gardening, but I was able to plant mushrooms this spring, and I tend to the roses Lady Alice gave me well enough.

By trade I make clothes and leather armor, and I'm very glad to offer them to Sleepers, when I can. I could make you what you like, in exchange for what medicine you can supply the Sanctuary, and I should be very glad to introduce you to the agricologists who can help you with your roses.
