The camera shifted a little as Keith crouched down next to it, and then turned it so that both he and the bag of coal were in the picture.

He smirked.]

Thanks, man. It'll help keep the house warm during the cold weather. Best gift ever.

From what I've heard, I can't disagree...

It's weird that for as advanced as this place is, it's just as ass-backwards in other ways.

Yeah. I've noticed that. I mean, I guess you use what you have to move things forward and all that, but... [He shrugged a little.] Either way, it could always be worse, I suppose. [Anything could be worse, really. Keith had learned that in life the hard way.]

Don't see how ya can. Being boring is just.... boring. I like the fast life! 'Cuz what's the point of living if you don't do something wild?

[ It'd make sense if Shiro is the most stabilizing for Keith - after all, he does kind of sound like a father figure for the other, and Daniel's experience with his own surrogate father figure back home sure always made him feel more stable. ]

Seems like we're in the same boat then. You know, in regards to having a couple of people from home here.

[ Even if it's.. more of a mixed bag for Daniel, that's for sure... ]

I can't imagine what it must be like to show up all alone in this place, without anyone you know. This place can already be so awful to deal with. [ And then having no one you recognize, having to build everything up from scratch - it's got to be tough. ]

Yeah. [Keith looked off to the side for a moment.]

I was lucky in that regard. They found me right away.

I've got enough excitement in my life. Boring is kind of a break from things for a bit.

[Really. He'd been through some crazy stuff. And he wasn't completely non-reckless. He just went about it differently.]

[People wanting to be trusted for the wrong reasons sounds all too familiar to Willow too.]

Yeah. I've seen that happen before too. I mean, most people here have been really great, really nice and everything. I mean, things happen here all the time that are way easier to get through if we help each other out.

But... you still have to be careful sometimes.

[ Daniel lets out a sound that sounds like it's midway between a scoff and a laugh.

Not at Keith's situation, but at a personal memory. It probably becomes more clear when he explains: ]

I was found by Johnny Lawrence on the beach.

[ One can imagine how that went down. Hence Daniel's reaction. ]

That sure is one way to show up here.

You're right, a whole bunch of powerful creatures who get worshipped as gods could be causing us to suffer every month...

Oh... wait.

[Keith just... needed a second... Nope. He couldn't do it.]

I'm sorry.

At least he wasn't coming back from being a squid himself again. He was trying to flex on his first day and his squid arms dropped a block of ice from the ocean on his own head.

[Yes, Keith said, 'again'. Johnny's propensity for running his mouth and getting killed wasn't exactly a secret.]

I uh... might have laughed...

[Keith nodded.]

Yeah. Agreed.

Don't worry. I'll be careful with this. [He tilted his head towards the bag of coal in question.] Thanks for the warning, though.

Hey... [Keith gave Ritsuka a serious look.] Never say it can't get worse. Because it will. It always does.

[ ...

Daniel is quiet for a moment. Every single time he hears a story about stuff Johnny did before Daniel showed up here, it's just.. so much.. Just how often did that guy injure himself?

(Hopefully it was just an injury that time, rather than all those times he died..) ]

I really wish that man knew the meaning of the word 'caution'.

Don't lecture me. I'm well aware it can get worse. I'm perpetually waiting for it.

I mean, I can understand when people think that being cautious is overrated? [Yes... most definitely, yes... Keith could. Caution was not something that often appeared in his vocabulary when it came to physical activities. He wrinkled his nose a bit in a show of, "yeah I've been there."] But, uh... I think he kind of takes it to a new level.

I wasn't lecturing you. [Keith bit off his words.] I was making a statement. There's a difference. I don't waste time with lecturing.

[His tail swishes. He isn't going to have a fight.]

Just don't die from something Maul did.

Trust me. I don't plan on it.

I would understand that in a normal world.

[ Daniel can at least admit to that. Yeah, some people are a little more careful than others - that's just life. Johnny is a little extreme even by their world's standards, but it-- you know, it happens.

On the other hand.. ]

It starts turning into a problem when you've got places like these. Being careful is so important here. Even if people come back, death is still-- it's still death.

[Keith hesitated, his mood shifting dramatically at the mention of death.]

Yeah...

[Oh, he knew that alright. He knew it first-hand, and it had definitely left an impression. He was still coping a bit with the emotional fallout, even without thinking about the whole reason it happened in the first place. Getting run through with a giant sword wasn't fun.]

Yeah, it is...

[Keith lowered his head for a moment, trying to sort his thoughts, but his breathing had picked up a bit, like he was on edge.]

.. Keith?

[ It's hard to miss those signs about the other. And honestly - it's not like it's hard to imagine what has made the other's mood shift so suddenly and drastically, considering the topic they were talking about.

Daniel doesn't have to know the specifics of the situation the other is thinking about to have a vague idea. ]

Hey. [ His voice is a little softer - gentle. Like Daniel is reaching out to Keith, despite only able to do so verbally here. ] It's alright. Do you want to talk about it..?

[ His tone makes it sound like he doesn't mind even if Keith says he doesn't. Daniel figures the boy might not want to.

But he just wants the offer to be on the table in case he does need some place to throw it all out. ]

[Keith took in a deep breath, but then shook his head, looking off and away for a moment, though he wasn't really seeing what was in the room right there.]

No.

[It wasn't alright. Not yet. Keith wasn't sure if it ever would be. He'd been avoiding it since his post on the network a while back offering people the opportunity to get revenge if they wanted it. After all, he'd just come back if they killed him, right? But he'd lashed out, even if it had been under the influence of something else, and had managed to draw the attention of The Reckoning. So, at the time, he'd figured that might help other people, even if he was pretty sure it wasn't going to help him.

He'd managed to sort of pull himself together since then thanks to some really good friends, but he'd never been great with the whole idea of death anyway. So, he'd been kind of avoiding dealing with it since.]

Not really.

[ Daniel slowly exhales, before speaking up with an: ]

... okay.

[ He isn't going to push it too hard, even though there's clearly something wrong. Sure, Daniel thinks it's good for kids to talk about their problems, but.. on the other hand, it's not like he's the closest person to Keith, and he's sure that the people close to him could probably do a much better job with it. He seems close to that Shiro guy, right? Hopefully they'll talk about it.

So he pauses for a moment, but then gently steers the topic back a little to something hopefully a little more manageable. ]

You'll take some caution into account though, right? [ Unlike Johnny, like they were talking about.. ] You're a good kid.

[Keith actually snorted slightly.]

You'd be one of the few to think so. [But he sounded somewhat amused before taking a long deep breath.]

Eh... caution was never really my M.O. It's mostly worked out for me so far.

[Mostly. When he was fully in control of his own faculties, of course.]
