Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and I want to do something really special for Snow now that we're together. Something beyond the usual flowers and chocolates and cards, although she'll get all three from me.

But of course this depends on whatever we're being put through this month. I'd still like to find some way to make it special. [and her expression turns stern] And if The Doorway chooses to do something truly awful to us, I'll never forgive them!

Okay, married is already a death sentence, but arranged? I woulda just trash the whole wedding with bombs that'll bite people.

[wryly] Don't think I wasn't tempted. But he had money, mother wanted money, so the deal was set. But not followed through on, thank god.

Uuuughhh, people get sooooo crazy when it comes to money. — And that's sayin' a lot coming from me. When I use to steal, I'd just take their sacks or wallets then dump 'em in the streams.

It means so lil' to me you couldn't pay me to count 'em for you.

They are. Mother was money-crazed. She grew up wealthy, married rich, but didn't know that her husband had a gambling problem until after his passing and those he owed money to came calling. Sacrificing me on the altar of wealth was a small price to her.

Y'know, that sorta happened to me, too. My old man wanted our city to be more independent and the other city didn't want us to be. There was a lotta fighting between the two places and then they offered my old man a deal.

They'd give him the independence he wanted, access to their stuff, just... accept all of his demands. ( a light pause.) — In an exchange for me. To lock me up or kill me, who knows.

I got pretty upset when I heard about it. And I thought he was gonna do it, it looked like he was. But... before he passed, he said he wouldn't give me up to 'em. Not for anything.

I felt... horrible for not believing him. ( ah, she realizes she's going on a tangent here. )

Uhm. I'm sorry your mom did the opposite. You don't need her. She can go blow up and sink to the bottom of the ocean.

[Rose sighs softly and her expression softens as well] He should have told you so before he was about to pass. Make it clear to you from the beginning. I can't imagine how much you must have worried.

But, you're right. I don't need my mother. I haven't for a long time.

Well that day, Vi was also yammerin' in my ear. Just the two of 'em bouncing back and forth with me trying to figure out which side to choose. Wasn't the best day...

That's good. I betcha got a lotta friends here, too. I know we haven't been keeping tabs on each other, but you seem pretty decent.

It never is. Though, sometimes circumstances choose us instead of the other way around.

A fair number, yes. And that's my fault. I've been too wrapped up in myself lately for my own good. I'm going to try to be better about that in the future.
