Good evening.

In my home, I was something of a healer. As it would happen, my abilities have persisted upon my arrival in this particular world. I've noticed mentions of an illness, lately among us Sleepers. While I'm not certain I can heal it completely, I am more than willing to do what I can to help the symptoms.

Therefore, I am opening my living quarters to anyone who may be suffering. Please, don't hesitate to drop in.

[He pauses, and then adds, a bit more sheepishly:]

Ah - should the landlady raise an issue, ask for "Cho Hakkai". She'll certainly be more agreeable that way.

[And, true to form, if anyone stops by his room in a Crenshaw Boarding House, Hakkai will help with the Leech symptoms as best he can.]

But I don't wish to overstay my welcome, either.

Nonsense. [ Look how quickly Daniel says that.

He didn't even have to think. It's like he wants to banish the very concept of Hakkai ever not being allowed to come over anymore out of the other guy's head. ]

You're always welcome, alright? Even if you wouldn't cook, or help clean up the dojo, or anything else. Even if you'd just stop by to chat, that'd be more than fine with me.

Ahaha - well.

In that case, you've nothing to concern yourself with.

[Because he does like doing these things. The whole domestic chore thing. He's good at it. He always has been.]

Perhaps one of these days I will simply take up residence in a closet if you're this welcoming.

[ He's kind of glad to have fended off that concern - or he takes this as a sign that he has, anyway.

And when Hakkai even arrives at that last part.. well, that just makes Daniel laugh. ]

You know, if you'd want to live with me that badly, all you'd have to do is ask.

Rest assured, you won't find me lurking in your closet unannounced.

That would be terribly rude of me.

[Daniel, please, don't invite this weirdo to stay over.]

[ You think Daniel "constantly picking up strays" LaRusso would hesitate?? ]

[ Yes, that's the part of all of this he's focusing on. ]

Are you allergic to normal rooms?

Well, that's generally where one keeps the cleaning supplies. I thought it was appropriate!

[Really, he's joking. He's honestly joking.]

Okay, you can't make a joke comparing yourself to a broom and not expect me to protest that one. You know that, right?

It's actually an upgrade!

Some have said a friend and I bear a striking resemblance to dirt rags.

[ Oh, god.

Is that the friend? You know. The friend. The.. "friend."

Daniel figures asking is kind of a dicey situation, considering how much Hakkai seems to miss him, so he opts out on that one. But he can't help but at least ask: ]

How did that even happen? That almost makes it sound like you really managed to annoy someone.

[It is absolutely The "Friend". That would be them. A pair of disposable rags.]

Ah, well. That's just how Sanzo is. He's rather antagonistic on the best of days.

I believe he was actually trying to be complimentary, come to think of it.

I think there's got to be some sort of cultural difference here then.

[ Because that's clearly got to be it, right. ]

Because I don't think anyone would take that sort of thing as a compliment where I come from.

Haha, no... not really. That's just Sanzo for you.

Most things that don't accompany the threat of gun violence are complimentary language for him!

[ Suddenly Daniel is getting a vague idea where Hakkai got the ominious smiling thing from.. It seems like the sort of thing you've just got to be capable of while trying to deal with people who threaten gun violence.

.. though the idea of gun violence is - to a normal guy like Daniel - only just startling enough to ask: ]

But it's not like he'd ever threaten to shoot you, right?

[ .. right? ]

... would you be more comforted if I changed the subject instead of answering?

[Because the answer is yes. Yes, he has threatened to shoot Hakkai before. It's just another day on the road with Sanzo.]

[ .. yeah. Okay.

No answer to that question - or rather, the thing Hakkai is saying right now - is definitely enough of an answer for Daniel. He knows exactly what it is now. ]

Hakkai!

[ He doesn't even sound offended. Maybe a little bit, but Daniel mostly sounds like a very healthy - thank you!! - mix of concern and shock. ]

You can't just let people threaten you with a gun!

[ Even if you're good at just going along with stuff and downplaying things, that's just a little bit too far, Hakkai! ]

It's not that bad, really. Sanzo is the only one who ever gets away with it.

[Anyone else is fair game to be obliterated by the gang, after all.]

[Surely, that's comforting! That's got to be more reassuring...]

... and his shots are generally warning shots more often than not. I doubt he truly has the heart not to miss.

[and this is their holy man he's talking about.]

[ See, this is the thing. Daniel knows that Hakkai probably has the ability to obliterate anyone who'd threaten him with a gun. He's seen the other guy's memories, after all. Slightly disjointed memories, but still enough to give him the impression that Hakkai could definitely do that if he chose to.

Which means he's willing letting someone threaten him with a gun! Even if it's a friend, that's still potentially deadly!! ]

.. you're going to give me grey hairs.

[ Please, Hakkai. The stress is not good for the middle-aged man. ]

I was actually hoping to avoid that for a few more years, you know.

Ah, my apologies, that certainly wasn't my intention.

[Daniel, your faith is endearing. But they're all pretty evenly matched - except for Goku. He's always the exception.]

Don't worry too much, they say grey hair makes a man more distinguished!

Are you willing to tell my wife that when I return to her with grey hair?

[ .. though the idea of returning home is.. a little too hopeful, probably, but Daniel isn't touching that thought with a ten foot pole, or he'll just feel miserable all over again.

But as long as he can keep it to a light joke? He can manage that. ]

She's fierce, you know. [ Even without a gun!!! ]

I don't see why not.

[You know... in the event, somehow, their worlds would overlap enough to allow that.]

I can be very persuasive with needs be.

[ Look at this bold, bold answer. It makes Daniel let out a huff, sounding almost like disbelief. ]

Now that would be a battle for the ages. [ Hakkai and Amanda? God, they're both so stubborn. Like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable wall. ] I think I might need to be far, far away if that'd ever happen.

Well, we'll just have to see, won't we?

Though, in my experience, when someone is being spoken of, it's almost better for them to be nearby.

Oh, I'm pretty sure Amanda knows I'd say all of this about her.

[ And not even mind it - because that's what she's like. Hence why Daniel sounds completely unbothered as he's saying it, like he's not even worried in the slightest it'd upset her. ]

We've been married for far too long to not know perfectly well what we feel for each other.
