[Echo is clearly in an area with a lot of plants, but with the situation all month it's hard to tell where exactly that might be. The Omni is far enough away that her Omen must be operating it.]

A question.

[She may as well make that her username at this point and save everyone some time...]

Is managing vegetation a feasible job in this place throughout the year? Admittedly I have not paid much attention to the plants in my time here.

[As she speaks, a giant Venus flytrap lurches at her from the side as the surrounding overgrowth suddenly shifts. Seemingly without even moving her head, Echo swipes her arm upwards and slices right through the middle of the plant with the short sword protruding from her large sleeves. Its leaves drop where they were.]

I have become rather adept at shearing plants in these past few weeks. I've also been attempting to determine how one obtains a suitable job without it being assigned to you as part of your purpose. This seems like a possible solution.

[She's probably completely wrong about this being a useful job here, but please feel free to help her. She needs as much as she can get...]

Depends on what you mean.

It's not usually quite like this, except briefly in the spring, no. Most of the time it's hard to get plants to grow well here, actually.

Managing in the sense of helping vegetation that edible grow - then yes. We could always use people who want to pitch in that way.

Well. Occasionally there's weeding and pruning. But it's not most of what farmers and gardeners do, no.

If you like fighting, Hunting beasts is a pretty common career around here? [Ezra has big reservations about how a lot of Hunters go about it, both morally and practically, but hey, it is an option.]

[Ezra hesitates a second before answering.]

I..don't know exactly what you mean by failures, of course. But pretty much any situation with a beast involved is going to be risky to straight up less than ideal, no matter what.

As in, it's completely possible that you could not realistically make better choices than you did - maybe no one could - and still 'fail' in ways that results in a lot of pain.

But if situations like that bring you pain you don't want to live with, then no, Hunting is probably not a great option for you.

[He nods gravely.]

That sounds like a pretty big change. I'm sure there are reasons, but they aren't always easy to figure out.

It...might be helpful to you, to figure out what sort of job you do want, to spend sometime thinking about it, or talking it out. What happened. Why that change in reaction.

Having less...structure in your life can be a big adjustment. [There's only so much Ezra can relate, on a personal level. Almost all the structure to his life has been self imposed.]

It sounds like your friend may bear some responsibility for not recognizing their limits and holding to them. Although possibly their judgement was impaired by corruption? And - only you can say, of course - possibly your overconfidence was partly corruption, too?

Why not? You seem like you're capable.

[ Sharon listens carefully and a few things about the story strike a chord in her. ]

...it sounds like this place was affecting you at the time. [ Strangely high confidence? It could've been the blood effect of the month or one of the varieties of events or a goddamn piece of pthumerian cursed chocolate. ] I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't beat myself up for things out of my control here but... it sounds like it wasn't really on you.

And, even if it was your fault, people make mistakes. They fucking suck. But we learn from them. We grow, we better ourselves, and we try not to make them again. [ The fact that this still haunts Echo is a sign that she won't let herself make that same mistake. ]

Did you manage to talk to your friend before he returned to the ocean? [ Sharon's trying to see if maybe something was left unspoken and that's the guilt that's truly eating her up. ]

( Ah, here's Echo slicing and dicing things again.... By now, Peter's at least used to it enough to not jump and scream! )

It's a good idea, and I bet a lot of people would be glad to hire you to get rid of those things. But I will say these.... bitey ones aren't usually around, so you might run out of plants to uh... manage.

( "Manage" equating to "cut in half", of course. )

When it comes to getting a job, there's a few places around here that could be nice. Bookstores, bakeries, even some flower shops. Is there anything you like to do? Or maybe like... something you want to learn how to do?
possessum: (i feel some part of you cover me)

Oh— sorry, yeah, actually you're probably onto something there....! As far as I know, there's not anyone like keeping up with plant management around the city. I know a few people have mentioned starting up gardens and stuff, too. That might be something to look into, could be interesting....and I hear gardening's supposed to be really relaxing. There's edible type stuff, but also flowers that could be nice to take care of.

( Peter does grow weed, but that's,,,,, probably different.

But oh. "I'd like to learn how to have friends." Even if the girl says it in that very logical-sounding manner of hers, it tugs at Peter's heartstrings.
)

Having a job is honestly a good way to make friends, I think. Since you get regular customers who come in, plus there's your co-workers.

I bet you could use some of those skills in a lot of place. Like— cutting stuff up, you could do that at a bakery. Do you like sweet things?

( Maybe he could help her find something she might be interested in trying out.... )

This has been the only month it's been this bad. Though before there was a certain vine that you had to watch out for that was problematic.

But for a job, just think of something that you enjoy and ask aroun. There are a lot of businesses that are run by other sleepers, and they're looking for help. For instance I own and run Flour and Bloom, a bakery and flower shop in Cellar Door. And Usagi has her own business make small trinkets and knickknacks for people.

Yeah, they would leave someone pretty drained and tired all the time until eventually they just collapsed. But they were small red vines that were hard to spot at times. These a are a lot bigger and easier to avoid.

Noting what you see, you could be a reporter and have a news feed. Or maybe something like a review guide for different places around the city.

I'm sure by now you're tired of people telling you that the plants don't normally behave like this, so I'll skip straight to the part where I mention that Outreach is always looking for more volunteers to help us improve regular living conditions in Trench. Our methods are usually nonviolent; though we spent most of this month helping people clear the plants away from their homes, we started as a volunteer construction group, and our activities tend to change from month to month.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have or put you in touch with our founder, if you like.

As I said it varies, and we're happy to work with our volunteers to match them with tasks they feel would suit them best. Over the winter months we were mostly occupied with clearing snow from people's houses and the major roads; this summer if we get heavy storms again we'll probably find ourselves mostly repairing roofs and replacing windows, that sort of thing. We can also teach you carpentry if you'd like! When I joined up last summer I barely knew which end of the hammer to grab, but our crew leader is also an excellent teacher.
