[Maul looks very grim when he starts off the video.]

Since some of you might wonder where he is and since he had messages for me to pass along to some of you, I'm here today to tell you Wesker is dead. I killed him.

[He quickly goes on before any screeching or condemnation can start being thrown his way.]

It was not out of malice, amusement, or anger. It was an act of mercy. The zealots took him and by the time I found him he was little more than a corpse but somehow still breathing. There was no hope for his recovery.

[Maul's eyes shut for a moment, still seeing the eviscerated body lying on the table that looked more like an autopsy victim than someone still alive, lungs and heart able to be seen and still working despite all that had been done to Wesker's body by those seeking his blood.]

I'm not sure how he lasted even that long with what they did to him. I ended his suffering. Hopefully, he will be back in a short time.

[He and Katherine don't know each other that well, so Maul is a bit guarded as he answers, but the fact it's a private conversation does help keep his hackles from rising up.]

Why does everyone keep asking this...? [He mutters to himself before he finally gives an answer.] Not much of anything at the moment. I didn't feel bad doing it but there is no satisfaction to be gained snapping the neck of a man eviscerated and still left alive in a helpless state.

People ask because some of us know what it's like to hurt or kill one of your friends.

[ it's good that maul has a few people asking him the same question. it means that people care. from the network posts she's seen regarding him, it seems that maul has a mixed fan club. it's good to know the pitchforks will be tucked away in this instance. ]

I suspect others have told you that you've done the right thing. What are you going to do after this, assuming he comes back to life?

I was made to be a weapon by my master. Killing doesn't quite affect me the same way it does everyone else.

[But it did affect Maul on some level, he was just unwilling to let go of his stubborn pride and admit that fact.

His voice does grow hard with anger once he thinks up an answer to Katherine's question.]

If I thought I could take down any of those zealots on my own, I'd go massacre the lot of them. If they want blood, it can come from shedding their own.

Just because you were made to be a weapon doesn't mean you're not allowed to have feelings.

if he was made to be a killer and nothing more, then his master did a very poor job when he chose to allow him to have feelings and his own thoughts.

but katherine understands it, in a way. she had to make herself a weapon in order to survive five hundred years. it doesn't mean that's the only way to live… and by how maul sounds, maybe he's growing out of his weapon-shaped box. ]

Tell that to my master. He just had me kill over and over again until I was as unfeeling as the saberstaff that I wielded. It gets easier the longer you do it and I did it far too much from the time I was a young teenager.

[He feels Katherine will understand that last part quite well. She seems like a survivor from what Maul has seen, someone who will do whatever it takes to stay alive. Perhaps she could have ended up staying alive if someone cut her in half as well.]

[ space people and their very weird ways of life. at least maul is still here, still standing, and he doesn't seem to be as unfeeling as he describes. ]

It doesn't have to define you now.

[ which sounds ironic to her, given that she's postured how she's been for five centuries has been acceptable—it's who she is. a murderer, a survivor, alone. ]

I've spent five hundred years running. It's been hard to stop, but you don't have to be what the people who abused you think you are.

[Not a confession Maul would have normally made to just anyone but he's worn out and emotionally tired after everything he's been through, so he's more inclined to say things he wouldn't otherwise.

Being a Sith may not have been Maul's choice but it has been such an integral part of his life that he doesn't know who he is just by himself. There's a reason he introduces himself with the title 'Darth' before his name after all. Someday, in the future of his own galaxy, he'd find a way to shed himself of that identity and find himself again, but that's almost two decades off from where he is right now.]

[ she's been there, still has a foot in it. people think she's a manipulative bitch, and while it's not necessarily a title similar to "sith", it's a skin katherine's had difficulty shedding over the years. ]

Maybe start with "Maul". You don't have to be a Sith, but you can be someone else. Someone who… [ she purses her lips and thinks for a moment. ] makes people laugh. Or someone who looks out for those he cares about.

[His eyes squint just a little bit in thought, the black tattoos looking more prominent around the skin of his eyes with the movement. Then he shakes his head. Sorry, Katherine, he's immensely stubborn and hard-headed when he wants to be.]

It seems to be a poor time to consider changing when apparently all my talents are good for is causing death, even if it doing so was for the best right now.

[ oh, maul. ]

But what do you think your talents are?

[He stops and thinks....and thinks....and thinks. Oh dear, Katherine may have broke him with that one.]

I don't know.

[He finally answers, sounding both frustrated and a little sad.]

I wasn't allowed to learn anything besides what my master wanted me to when I was young and all he wanted out of me was to be an obedient weapon.

[ that's her, the breaker of men.

he leaves the opening so wide. katherine appears nonchalant like they're discussing shoes—because that's how normal this conversation is allowed to be. anyone can be whatever they want; it's normal. ]

Is that what you want to be?

[At least on this question he has a ready answer.]

No. Not anymore.

[He sighs, rubbing at some of the tension held in his neck.]

But in some ways it was easier to be that. Simpler. I had no questions or doubts in my mind.

[Of course, that was because Sidious didn't let him feel those things.]
