Hello. Again. [ Oof, okay, not the strongest start. ] I'm Anakin Solo, a knight of the Jedi Order, at your service. I sort of remember being here before, and I wanted to thank everyone who helped me out.

They offered me a bed at the orphanage, but I don't want to take it from someone who might need it.
How does housing work here, exactly? I don't mind sleeping outside, but that doesn't seem wise in the long run.

[ A pause. ]

By the way, I don't remember the sky being like this before-- is this normal? As normal as anything is here, I mean.

[ Another pause. He's clearly not in his element. ]

Hi! Again. Good to see you in a place without giant spiders.

You were here before? Yikes. Um, at least you know what to look for? Any tips, 'cause I'm still really new at all of this?

[ It's a relief every time he hears a familiar voice, especially when it's someone who's not so fixated on his name.

He sticks to audio, but she might be able to hear him smile. ]

The giant spider makes for a good story, at least. I was only here for a little while-- around the time we encountered the spider.

The advice I've gotten so far has been along the lines of "prepare yourself."

[she honestly has no idea just how connected he is to the people already here. she only knows that he was there for her when she needed him. and anything else, well, she was probably being a giant dork.

but she does hear in his voice that he's smiling, which made her smile in return]

Yeah, I know. I don't think that's a "meet cute" for any kind of movie.

I guess that's a very general warning. As if places like this can be prepared for. From what I've heard, there's something strange every month like clockwork. The stuff for this month was annoying and dangerous, too. I'm still kind of surprised I made it out okay, the only tombs I've ever been in before were in video games.

What's a "meet cute?"

[ He's not encountered a lot of Earth slang yet. ]

What happened last month?

[ She was stuck in a tomb? ]

Oh, um. It's where the hero and heroine of a movie do something silly, like literally run into each other or spill each other's coffee and hey, they smile and the story goes from there. Not one mentioned giant spiders.

[understandable. she's too full of it. also, she belatedly realized what she compared them to and her blush can likely be heard over the Omni]

It was weird. I'd be walking, minding my own business when all of a sudden a--a pit opened under me? And I was stuck in a tomb with some riddle to figure out or puzzle to solve with the whole "if you can't do this, you're gonna die!" hanging over my head.

The giant spider wasn't fun at the time, but it makes for a more interesting story than spilled coffee, right?

[ Anakin is fortunately (?) not very good at telling if someone likes him. ]

And it happened completely randomly? No clear cause as to why it happened or why it ended?

[despite her best efforts, she blushes and grins] One thousand percent more interesting. Really, now that you put it that way, I'm going to be disappointed in your usual romcom.

[and there goes her mouth again, getting ahead of her]

Well...I guess they were kind of like games? And it was the Moss King's month, he was apparently a sucker for games, even games which might kill us. Maybe even especially in favor of.

[ That gets a warm laugh out of him. It feels nice, given the day he's had so far. ]

I don't really watch "romcoms," so I don't think it'll be a problem for me.

[ Granted, he doesn't know exactly what a romcom is, though he can guess from context. ]

So he turned the entire Trench into a game? That's... insane.

[ He can warp reality and chooses to use it to play deadly games. Wonderful. ]

[the first few days are always the worst. actually, the first month is awful, trying to get used to everything while coping with whatever this place threw their way]

Neither do I, so we're good!

[she can't help herself from giggling and feels herself blush, though she wonders if she's still blushing a normal red or if her darkblood made it look different]

Pretty much! And yeah, it was. I managed to avoid some of the worst of it, but before it would let me leave, there was this...hole. And I could feel someone watching me from it and telling me all of the different ways that I sucked. So that was a kick to the self-esteem.

[ She's in a chipper mood for someone talking about a near-death experience. But sometimes all you can do is laugh, right?

She can probably hear his wry smile. ]

You survived. I bet that showed them not to underestimate you.

[she doesn't like to really let on when there are problems. it's how she's basically mothering her mother and older sister, why she never told anyone what Rue was doing.

and she can, making her smile a little more]

I did! I still can't believe how I did it, but...apparently I have super-powers? Almost everyone does.

[ Powers she didn't have before? Interesting. ]

You do? What kind of powers?

[brand new powers! only one she'd used successfully, though]

Weird ones. This guy was kind of threatening me, so--so somehow I made him think he was in my high school for a little while. It got him to back off, at least. And in theory, I can pause time and lift stuff with my mind. Those two haven't really happened yet. [just last night, she'd stared at a chair for what felt like hours, trying to make it move. no luck]

[ He doesn't know what high school is, but it sounds like it was terrible enough to stop a bully.

Planting illusions and telekinesis are Jedi powers, but he definitely doesn't feel Force sensitivity from her. And stopping time? Jedi can slow their perception of time, but not stop it. ]

How do you know you can do them? Is there some sort of common... power set?

[worse than terrible enough. so many people, all so wrapped up in themselves that they couldn't see more than an inch in front of their own faces. she tried to not be like that, but considering her sister's drama, she constantly found herself being dragged into things she didn't want to be.

she's your average teenage girl. except for now having blood that sparkled like black glitter and apparently tasted like blackberries. not that she'd know, she found it creepy that other people knew]

I guess so? One for each blood type. I wound up with Darkblood and those are all things which are supposed to be possible. I kind of wonder if the other things will pop up when I really need them, too.

I haven't noticed any changes in my own powers yet.

[ Honestly, he's hoping he's been spared. Force powers are more than enough for him, thank you. ]

I have similar powers. Except for stopping time. [ Which sounds impossible, alarming, and (nerdily) fascinating. ] If you ever need help figuring them out or need to talk through something, I'm at your service.

Hmm. Maybe you're a Warmblood? They usually don't have any changes to their powers, so you wouldn't have to worry about learning something new.

[she feels like something out of a comic book. the whole experience feels simultaneously real and unreal, like a vivid dream]

Really? [it sounds impossible to her, too. another power she tried to use when alone at home, but it didn't seem to work] Really? I would appreciate that so much. [a pause] Would now be a good time?

Maybe. But I'm sure I'll learn something new all the same.

[ A little regretfully: ] I'm still settling in, but I'll let you know once I have a place.

[ And the shock of everything wears off. ]

[warmly] I'm sure you will. You're smart.

[hastily] I have a room free at the Lemon Cake House. If you need somewhere to crash.

What Would Cassie Do?

probably send nudes which would be leaked to the general population, but she's not looking to emulate Cassie in that way]

[ Good call, Lexi. 'Send nudes' would just end with him never being able to look her in the eye again. ]

Thanks. I took Master Kenobi up on his offer to stay with him, but I really appreciate the offer.

I'm not great company right now anyway. Today has been a lot.

[she wouldn't be able to, either. every mirror in the house? covered with a sheet or towel. if not outright taken out of the house. she knew better than to break mirrors, though, that was supposed to be bad luck]

Okay, that's fine. [a slightly nervous laugh] Even though I'm not sure who that is.

--oh! Well, uh, there's no rush? After all, we seem to have plenty of time.

[ He's not sure how to explain who Obi-Wan Kenobi is to his family. He is family, but it's not an easy thing to define. Especially when Anakin has just met him in person.

So he settles with: ] He's a family friend.

[ Anakin manages not to sigh. It's not that he's unhappy about being able to spend time with Lexi and the other people he's met here, but coming to terns with not going home is going to be a struggle. ]

Yeah, it sounds like it.

[she'd do her best to understand. she was an only child of only children, all of her grandparents were dead, and her dad...the less she thought about her dad, the better. and her relationship with her sister, Cassie, seemed strained for some reason she couldn't directly explain. her sister was acting weird in general]

Oh! That's got to be nice, to have him here too. So you're not completely flying blind, you've got someone to rely on.

[it's strangely easier for Lexi, despite being the baby of the family. their mom always favored Cassie and never made much of a secret of it. her classmates jockeyed for Cassie's attention. Cassie was a cheerleader, ridiculously popular, the kind of girl who could get anyone she wanted by flashing a smile. Lexi was just kind of...dull in comparison, not even the moon to Cassie's sun. maybe some part of the world where the sun never went to begin with]

Yeah. This--this is going to sound kind of stupid? But I've never been on my own before. Even when Mrs. Bennett did Brownies, we camped as a troop. I know how to cook and clean and take care of a household, none of that's a problem. It's that the household seems really quiet, just me and Orville.

It doesn't sound stupid. I'm usually not on my own for longer than a few weeks.

[ Ruefully: ] And when you're Force-sensitive, you're never really alone.

[ He can always feel it-- the hum of life all around him, the ebb and flow of the Force. It actually took training to learn how to shut it off rather than to open himself up to it. ]

[she sounds genuinely surprised and pleased] It doesn't? I mean, it's not that I'm glad that you understand, but. It's still kinda nice that you do?

Force-sensitive...what's that?

[there's always something new to learn around here, that's one of the things which she actually loves about this place. she's always been eager to learn as much as she possibly could. not because she was jockeying for valedictorian, but because she genuinely enjoyed learning]
