[ there's a house covered in toilet paper with a very tired jedi standing in front of it, just massaging his temple. ]

Is there a reason why my house is covered in paper? I assume there is a purpose to this other than a gross misuse of resources and time. If you have any issues with me, I much prefer a discussion than a clean up job.

[ he swats some of the butterflies away before sighing. ]

I'll be here. Tidying up.

[He's right here, and he has a slightly different view point, so-]

In my experience - a little harder when you don't get that training really young. Going places more densely populated have been a headache or two.

So the earlier you're trained on how to deal with it, the better. Is there some reason everyone wouldn't just sign up for like...emotion powers kindergarten?

[Ezra just...thousand yard stares for a few seconds, before he laughs, very quietly.]

Seems like it should be that simple, doesn't it? I really wish it was.

Short version: When I was growing up, places like where Master Kenobi was raised had been and were being deliberately destroyed, by someone who wanted to use people with abilities like ours. Or kill them if he couldn't recruit them.

But even before then it wasn't quite that simple. It's a rare ability, where we're from. Kids aren't always found young by people who can help them. Or they aren't wanted by their families and communities, for being different, so no one wants to help them. Or, again, they aren't safe from people who'd want to use them.

[Open mouth, insert foot.]

Well, I feel like an asshole now. That really sucks. Sorry.

[And it feels like such a small and inadequate thing to say in response, but she does feel bad.]

What happened to the shitbag who was killing people with powers like yours? Did someone kill him?
ezra_of_lothal: (Ezra determined)

[personal profile] ezra_of_lothal 2022-04-07 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
No. No. Don't feel bad. I'd really never thought about it quite those terms, and that's how it should work. There's lots of kids with powers here and I'm not sure how common early help with them is. I definitely don't think kids at the orphanage get all the education they need.

So, stuff for me to think about.

Well, he was still being a galaxy class jerk when I was last home. Last thing I did was ask giant space whale friends of mine to help break the blockade his minions had on my homeworld, which worked - score one for using emotion powers to make friends, right? And I also ruined his day in a few other ways.

Sadly, I had to tell him off via video call, not in person. [Not that he really thinks he could have killed the Emperor if he tried.]

But people come here from different times, too so...I've heard his rule of terror won't last much longer.

Glad he'll get what's coming to him.

[Space whale is not a term she ever expected to hear, but after the arrival here and everything she's learned thus far, she's just going to accept that stuff like that exists somewhere in a galaxy far, far away.

But as for an issue she might be able to help with...

Do you work at the orphanage?

[And space whale was an attempt to translate! He could have just said Purgill.]

Yeah. A couple of afternoons a week, lately. Not as much as, say, Shiro, who's there nearly every day.

Do they need any more people? I'm pretty good with kids.

[That, and she feels weird having so much free time.]

I can only spend so much time in a day training in karate and figuring out these new powers.

Pretty sure the orphanage could always use more people.

Cool. I guess I'll see you there sometime. My name is Tory. With a y.

Yeah, I'm sure we'll run into each other.

Please to me you, Tory. I'm Ezra.

What kind of education do the kids get here? I didn't have any powers before I got here so it's not like I'd be much help for teaching them that, but I've helped my little brother with his schoolwork before.
ezra_of_lothal: (Ezra shrugging by redacreuse)

[personal profile] ezra_of_lothal 2022-04-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well. Everyone of any age is welcome at the School of Mutter. Which is mostly informal. Which isn't inherently bad - most of my education is like that, too.

But it makes it hard to generalize.

[personal profile] abornfighter 2022-04-11 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Where I'm from, you start in kindergarten when you're about four, and then go all the way up to grade twelve when you're seventeen. Sometimes people skip grades and other times they get held back, but I guess it counts as formal?
ezra_of_lothal: (Ezra thoughtful by recadreuse)

[personal profile] ezra_of_lothal 2022-04-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds pretty organized to me, so yeah, I'd count that as formal.

There's school and academies like that back where I'm from, I just...didn't attend them for long. [He shrugs. He doesn't mind saying more, but it's kind of a downer to drop on someone.]
abornfighter: (unsure)

[personal profile] abornfighter 2022-04-11 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because of your powers?

[She's not going to push, but there's any number of reasons a person may have had to drop out.]
ezra_of_lothal: (Ezra shrugging by redacreuse)

[personal profile] ezra_of_lothal 2022-04-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of. Like, I think my parents had some idea, and that's why they taught me to hide, if I needed to.

I didn't know why I was different. Just that once they were taken away by the Empire, that letting myself get taken in by anyone really official didn't feel safe, even if they were local, not really Imperial.

I was a street kid.
abornfighter: (conflicted)

[personal profile] abornfighter 2022-04-13 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, makes sense. Not all law enforcement is there to actually help people. I wasn't a street kid, but I grew up poor.
ezra_of_lothal: (Ezra seems suspect by skyandsnips @tumbl)

[personal profile] ezra_of_lothal 2022-04-14 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sucks that that seems to be a common theme, across worlds.

So yeah, no school for me, during those years. Self-taught, until my first master offered to teach me about the Force and my abilities.
abornfighter: (controlled)

[personal profile] abornfighter 2022-04-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it all comes down to power and authority and why people want it. Some people have good intentions, for some it's just a job, and some want to abuse it.

Some parts of school are useful, some parts are even fun, but there's a lot of drama and boring stuff in there, too.

Is the Force the name for your emotion powers?
ezra_of_lothal: (Default)

[personal profile] ezra_of_lothal 2022-04-14 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
People tend to conflate the Force and our powers.

I was taught that the Force simply is, and binds everything together, and everyone is part of it.

Like - when you're in a crowd can feel the mood of the group shift.

But some people are more attuned to that energy and can manipulate it.
