I, um. Has anyone else talked to people from home through one of those portal things and, uh, gotten spoilers for their own life? Because I have and it's weird? I'm glad for some of it, sad for some of it and I kinda need to talk this out. If that's okay?

[there's a long pause as Lexi looks off to the side, and arranges Orville so he's sitting on her shoulder, Orville immediately moving in to comfort Lexi by snuffling at her neck. she reaches up idly to pet him]

Also. I'd kinda like a roommate? I live in Gaze in a Lemon Cake house. My room's the one with blue and yellow wallpaper. [a long pause] I've never lived on my own before and I don't think I like it.

That's both good and terrifying. Though, I wonder if in some way, it's proof of the multiverse theory, that hey, there are all these other Earths out there where someone did step on the butterfly which caused a tsunami somewhere else? And that there are other Earths with other us-es in them, too. So return that us to the multiverse we originally came from and yay! No real time has passed.

And I'm sorry for nerding out on you here, I was in college-prep physics back home.

No, it's okay. One of the things was something I'd want to hear. The other was something I was afraid I'd hear. So I guess it could be a trick of the mind?

Could be. But in that case, maybe the portal was never meant to be your future? It might belong to a different version of you entirely. Or it could be a warning that it's just the most likely path, if things continue as they are? If you want to change it, maybe you have to do something different.

I guess that depends on what you make of the fact that we're all here. What's this place's purpose?

It's rough, because I really wanted to do my play. But it's based on me, my sister, and all of her friends and it's about growing up and growing apart so those friendships kind of fade. Or are torn apart.

I wish I knew. Best I can figure is, it's one big social experiment to see how people react to situations they had no experience with before. Like the whole squid thing. Completely weird and impossible for most people.

Hate to say it, but I didn't have the most normal upbringing. I can't entirely relate. It sounds good, though. You're a writer?

That's a better theory than mine. At first, I just thought I was dead. Maybe this place was some kind of purgatory. I'm not even religious, but it was about all that made sense. I don't think that's true any more, though. Too many good people here.

I'm trying? I'm glad that I can use my laptop using the tech here. I don't know what I would've done if I hadn't.

Yeah, it really seems like most everyone is really nice? Which is a nice change from what I'm used to. And I'm pretty sure I'm not dead, one minute, I was at school, headed for my trig class, the next thing I knew I was a squid. There wasn't even enough time for me to blink between the two.

Kind of weird, isn't it? Half this town looks like something out of a Victorian novel, but we've still somehow got wifi.

Well... maybe not everyone. Don't get me wrong, you still ought to be careful. But it's still mostly a better place than the one I came from, so I'll take what I can get.

Oh my god, yes. It's like some weird steampunk thing only instead of steam engines, we have Lovecraftian creatures who like to fuck with us.

Yes, I should keep that in mind. All of us are coming in from different points and it's impossible to judge what unless you (general you) ask. Which can come across as weird.

I guess so? It's not even my least favorite class, gym class is. I can't see how my inability to hit a volleyball will impact my life in the future.
