[Luca and Ahiru of the house might have noticed Luz was gone all day, as were Varian, Rapunzel and Fern, and there were none the wiser about why. The three of them honestly tended to do their own thing, but this time was different. Luz returned later, closing the door behind her, and had stayed up in her room for several hours. Luca and Ahiru were likely to feel the distress in Luz now though, and while Ahiru wouldn't know why, Luca WOULD.

And now, Luz knew, she'd have to let the rest of Trench know.

[Late at night, the video feed clicked and there was Luz. Her eyes were rimmed red, she was slightly shaking and she was surrounded by the stuffed animals in her room. She looked at the camera for at least a minute before finally addressing the audience as a whole].

If you guys knew Rapunzel, I'm sad to say she's gone back to being a squid. She was pretty great, looking after us in the house and everything, and we're going to try and keep her tower spotless. She would have wanted it that way.

[She bit her lip, exhaling].

V-Varian and Fern are also gone.

They've...gone back too. I know a lot of you knew them from Deerington. In a lot of ways, they're why I chose to go to move onto the next world. Fern was cunning, quick and upfront about himself. He put himself out on a limb to save people, and was the model of a hero I think we all strive to be.

Varian was different, but in his own unique way. He was stubborn, smart, and one of the sweetest people I know. He'd come up with inventions I could only watch in awe of, and he'd work tirelessly on projects with strength I could never match. He and Fern were my older brothers, and the reason I live in this house now.


They mattered, just like everyone who leaves matters, and leave a mark when they go. If I ever ask myself why I'm here, suffering, I'll remember it's because of them, because they were everything that helped me move on from one bad moment to better ones.

I can't. That's just a fact.

[A hard one too. This wasn't something Luz was going to be able to blow over, no matter how hard she tried].

I used to stay up late just to give Varian something to eat, before Rapunzel arrived. It's dumb, because I'm younger than he is, but I knew how involved he's get on his projects. It's going to be weird to not hear him tinkering around in his workshop late at night when I go past his room...or seeing growth all over the house thanks to Fern.

Oh gosh. Without Fern, we HAVE to find ways to make trades! I'm going to have to go full time at Lysithea's!

I-It's okay! We'll find a way, don't worry Luz! And I'm sure our friends will help out.

[ they're not on their own after all. ]

That's vague! We have to make sure that we have a steady source of income? I mean, trade stuff I guess.

Wait, so we still have Fern and Varian's animals? Like, Lorraine the chicken and stuff?

[danserai]

Uhm, I think so? I saw them outside earlier. Should I check? Am I supposed to get two jobs? How many jobs is too many jobs?!

Never getting over that icon!

Please check! We might have to start making plans!

[Oh no you don't, Ahiru].

No, not YOU, Ahiru! Me, maybe Reaper? Possibly Luca, if he wants. You should just do what you're always doing, but I can probably use help with chores now, since we're, you know, down hands.

Besides, what would you do? You're a ki-I mean, well, inexperienced. Do you have a resume?

[Lusz doesn't but she could make one! Even if she couldn't really count on references].

Thanks, I appreciate that! Oh, and there's one more thing we should talk about.

We might want to invite Zib to stay. He's just outside the house right now, doing his thing, but we have room. What do you think about that?

[ she did forget about that, whoops. ]

I don't know him, but if you trust him, it's okay by me.

It's ok. Like I said, worry about chores, I'll try to handle the trades.

[Was Luz in mourning? Yes. Was she also going to put on her big girl pants and make sure the house is taken care of? ALSO yes].

I'll ask Luca and Reaper too, and of course I'll ask HIM. I'm pretty sure we can keep the spaceship in...

[She trailed off, thinking of Varian's lab, and sighed].

Wherever. We'll figure it out.

[ it feels like luz is using their current concerns to push back her feelings. ahiru eyes her, worried. ]

Uhm okay. But we can do that tomorrow. It doesn't have to be right now.

[Oh Luz is absolutely doing that, because the alternative is to stay in her room and cry.

She'll be doing that with the Fathiers way outside of Cassandra in the forest, thank you].

No, of course not. Now we have to, well, tell everyone and keep them in the loop.

Luca's already going to know Varian is gone. He made a Bond with him too.

I can do it.

[ she lays her hand on luz's shoulder. ]

Maybe you should rest for a while.

And be alone with my thoughts?

Now that's just crazy talk, Ahiru!

[She knows she's deflecting, but she did slightly mean it. Luz has had a LOT of people disappear in her life, way too many for a girl so young, that coping with it was more of a hardened task than she wanted to think about].

Besides, this is not the only thing that I'll be dealing with this month. There's a monster walking around Trench I agreed to help fight.

Aren't there plenty of people to handle monsters . . . ?

[ this is definitely a Problem. ]

Maybe, but this guy is no joke. Heavyset, built like a brick, a killer. I can fly, so I at least have an advantage over most fighters.

[It was probably one of the few reasons she was being allowed to fight at all].

[ she squints at luz. ]

Still. I don't know if this is a good idea.

It won't be easy, but I sure would feel better getting something that dangerous off of Trench.

It might hurt a bunch of innocent people, Sleepers and civilians.

[danserai]

Luz. . . I'm glad you want to help people.

But it sounds like you're doing it to escape.

I agreed to do this before Varian and Fern went back, Ahiru.

I'm not going to go back on my word now. I want to help so no one has to go through losing someone because of this monster.

[danserai]

What if we lose you?

I'll be as careful as I can, Ahiru. Worse comes to worst, IF something bad happens to me, I'll be back in a few days.

But I've survived some pretty bad monsters in Deerington and Trench, so my track record speaks for itself!

[Luz wasn't sure. But that didn't mean she was going to go back on what she said. She had a job to do].
