[Luca and Ahiru of the house might have noticed Luz was gone all day, as were Varian, Rapunzel and Fern, and there were none the wiser about why. The three of them honestly tended to do their own thing, but this time was different. Luz returned later, closing the door behind her, and had stayed up in her room for several hours. Luca and Ahiru were likely to feel the distress in Luz now though, and while Ahiru wouldn't know why, Luca WOULD.

And now, Luz knew, she'd have to let the rest of Trench know.

[Late at night, the video feed clicked and there was Luz. Her eyes were rimmed red, she was slightly shaking and she was surrounded by the stuffed animals in her room. She looked at the camera for at least a minute before finally addressing the audience as a whole].

If you guys knew Rapunzel, I'm sad to say she's gone back to being a squid. She was pretty great, looking after us in the house and everything, and we're going to try and keep her tower spotless. She would have wanted it that way.

[She bit her lip, exhaling].

V-Varian and Fern are also gone.

They've...gone back too. I know a lot of you knew them from Deerington. In a lot of ways, they're why I chose to go to move onto the next world. Fern was cunning, quick and upfront about himself. He put himself out on a limb to save people, and was the model of a hero I think we all strive to be.

Varian was different, but in his own unique way. He was stubborn, smart, and one of the sweetest people I know. He'd come up with inventions I could only watch in awe of, and he'd work tirelessly on projects with strength I could never match. He and Fern were my older brothers, and the reason I live in this house now.


They mattered, just like everyone who leaves matters, and leave a mark when they go. If I ever ask myself why I'm here, suffering, I'll remember it's because of them, because they were everything that helped me move on from one bad moment to better ones.

So now with that important question answered, you said there was something I could do to help next, didn't you?

Right, let's get to that.

I'm going to be going on a mission to help stop a dangerous monster terrorizing people on Trench. This thing, it's no joke, and probably going to be the strongest monster I've fought in awhile.

I'm hoping nothing happens to me, but if something DOES happen, or at least while I'm gone, looking after Luca and Ahiru? They're not useless without me or anything, but I need to prepare for anything, you know?

[Oh. He nods quickly, understanding the seriousness of the request.]

Yeah, of course I can do that.

[...]

There are other people that are going to be helping you with that, right?

[Because he would volunteer to come along and help if need be, but... that's probably not a good idea when he's still recovering from having gone all beastmode a week ago.]

Of course! this monster is going to be pretty tough. There are several people that are combining to try and take this thing down.

Sounds rough though, so I'm going to cover my bases.

Okay, good. Not that I didn't think that you were taking precautions, but... I just wanted to make sure anyway.

No, I understand! If you have concerns, you should, this is my safety we're talking about.

[Once again, he is momentarily struck by how surreal it is to actually have people to be concerned about in his life.]

So, um... if something seems to be going wrong, don't hesitate to call me or get my attention somehow. Maybe I can come help depending on what's going on.

[Luz is just happy he didn't try to stay living on their lawn despite being offered a place].

NO, I need you to stay with the guys at home! Trust me, when we have to go on a fighting mission, I'll totally let you in on it! But if something happens to me, I need you to make sure they're safe, and, well, that I'm in one slimy piece if it somehow gets that bad.

[She sure hoped not though].

Uh... hopefully it doesn't come to that.

[Luz showing up in that condition, he means.]

But okay, I'll stay put until you get back.

I'm hoping the same, but I don't want to discount something bad happening. It helps to be prepared.

[And boy, did Luz suddenly start thinking about that more often].
