[Vira-Lorr looks angry, though it's hard to tell what it is that is affecting her. She's squinting and gripping the table in her shop. There are cards there in front of her, and the card 'Justice' shows prominently in the feed. She's breathing heavily as she speaks up, and she's still recovering from having seen what she saw in Wesker's footage.]

Pthumerians do not understand things the way that we do. They are absolutes given flesh. [She swallowed hard.] I tried to explain it to a friend before they departed. They are living beings, but they are also more avatars of what it is that they care about. The Moss King... avatar of chance, fate, and deals. The Doorway, who watches over the bonds that tie us together. Mariana, who presides over the depths of the sea. Cynthia, the Moon Presence. Each... more alien and more a concept. And with each passing month, their influence is felt. Mariana's vision comes soon enough, but first there is one more.

The Reckoning, it comes. [She held up the card and looked at the screen pointedly.] They are absolutes, and she is justice. Justice does not care about mercy, does not care about redemption, does not care about forgiveness. It sees in black and white. It cuts.

Be prepared for things to get... dark, as if they were not already.

I will admit that I feel about 24 hours late this time around, but warning people that this is not over yet, and that it will likely impact the rest of the lunar cycle seems best.

Justice is knowing when mercy is called for. Justice is knowing when redemption is earned. Justice is knowing who to punish when people are reduced to stealing food while their king feasts on pigeon pie. Justice is a world where everyone has enough to eat in the first place.

[she doesn't dare say that anything less than that isn't justice. she doesn't say that she's never truly seen justice before. she doesn't say she can't see how any one being can embody justice in an unjust world.]

True justice is those things. You are not wrong. I apologize.

This card is a part of prognostication and soothsaying. Its interpretation might be better termed 'cold, dispassionate justice based solely upon black and whites.' There is another card which represents justice as you see it better, called Judgment. Justice... can be a good card, so long as it is tempered by wisdom.

The Reckoning is not that sort I imagine. [A shake of her head.] I haven't seen her in my visions, but I saw her in a feed last night, very much as I imagined.

Frankly, I don't see what the Doorway sees in her, but love is strange that way.

[Hey, Michael may not really buy into this harsh view of justice himself, but he can admit that he's done a Lot Of Shit that he was never really punished for! It's easier to see this coming down on him than anybody else; he can't even really argue it.]

I'm not going to pretend that you aren't in peril. Albert certainly was, and you and I have talked in the past... My own sins have been paid in blood, but with a Pthumerian?

Who can say if she views the debt as paid? By the same token, who can say if others will not start feeling like she does. Their influence waxes at times. I expect the worst.

This is our first full year in Trench, as of the month of Mariana. We emerged from the ocean shortly after this. So, yes. I believe that this period is the Reckoning's time of ascendancy.

What precisely that entails, I cannot say, but it likely involves a twisted, alien notion of justice somehow.

The ironies that abound with these beings could fill libraries. Funny might not be my first choice of words, but I can take a certain dark chuckle.

I believe only the half-breeds may have a human lifetime of vices, if any of them are actually still alive. I have my suspicions.

[Ada herself wasn't really worried about the justice aspect because honestly she hasn't really done anything wrong herself. Buuut, for some reason she was worrying about someone who has caused her pain. Honestly she knew she was going to forgive them at some point but she didn't want them to be punished before that.]

But justice should be about those things right depending on the person it was done upon.

there's a bit of a difference, as someone was reminding me earlier, between true justice and pitiless, remorseless law applied without thought to a person's situation, or to forgiveness and mercy. The Reckoning is more the 'pitiless' sort.

Maul, I probably don't need to tell you this, but have a care this month. I am almost certain that some of the things you've done in life are probably perceived as unpaid crimes and debts by someone. [She shook her head.] I fear this may be a very bad month for you.

The Reckoning does not make distinctions.

( Peter, admittedly, still knows so very little about this world — still keeps some... necessary distance from getting too close to how it works and what it involves, but Vira-Lorr's someone he's going to listen to.

He's afraid. The fear's there in his voice, the way it trembles slightly around the edges, but it's mostly there in his eyes. It's a deep-rooted fear that's been festering quietly in him for a long, long time. It's the fear of someone who lives with guilt — but in his case, it's not unwillingly. Peter fully believes he deserves what's coming to him.

But he still fears it. What it might involve. What it might cost him. He's dared to let himself love others again, and maybe that's what he'll lose. Maybe he'll wake up and Luna won't be here anymore. Back to the ocean. Gone. )

Do you have any idea what she'll... do to people?

Oh... probably just kill them if she thinks they merit it for their crimes. She's about as subtle as a brick through a window.

[AHEM. Sorry, that was perhaps too blunt.]

I apologize. I should be more sympathetic. I am less concerned with her. She is a violent bailiff out to enact her own sense of justice. But her will likely influences others. That is the worse danger, because I am less concerned with what she can do...

than I am with what everyone can do if influenced by her.

[ Thankfully both Vira-Lorr herself and others have noted that things are often bad enough already - so Ange manages to swallow those words in rather than speaking them out loud, no matter how weirdly irritated she's been left ever since the start of this month. Like there's something pricking her constantly.

It might be why she's not exactly sounding incredibly enthusiastic as she speaks up. ]

In other words, that one is probably going to murder people all over the place, huh.

[ For perceived crimes, that is. It feels like a natural conclusion with the way this place often seems to work. ]

A distinct possibility. [she sighed.] But I am more concerned that her presence may influence others to take up the mantle of "Justice" and enact it upon each other.

And where she is unsubtle and crude, some of us... are not.

There are two versions of justice, I fear. The sort you are 'probably' thinking of is the idea of doing that which is most righteous and best for all parties. Seeking to punish a person properly and appropriately, to reform them and to relieve a wounded party. To take everything into account and be both fair and firm.

This ... is another version. [She held the justice card up for him to see.] Another version is a pitiless, merciless application of law. If the person has done wrong in its eyes, it punishes in what it sees as a measured response. An eye for an eye. A life for a life. No thought. No explanations. No extenuating circumstances.

The Reckoning is much more like the latter than what most of us would call justice.
