He jerks back. He did not expect to be addressed (he surmises this is a greeting) by a repository of information (or whatever this object is). The implications, in light of some of his recent discoveries, are... concerning. Only his training keeps him from panic, though his nostrils do flare a little. ]

Safety and peace.

[ As-salamu alaykum. Standard greeting. Also translated as Peace be upon you. In it, a wish. (A wish that this is just a mechanical ruse, some trick of science.) His voice is steady. Low, tempered steel. It has to be. ]

[ He jerks back. He's being spoken to in direct response to his actions. He did not expect this from an informational device, nor even just in a mundane manner. He covers his tracks--not that he's made any to begin with. He's committed no crime. Yet. ]

Who are you? [ he demands. He even casts an intent look around what look like derelict walls and bits of sky through them, but he sees no stranger watching him. ]

[ He draws his hand back, bristling--like a threatened cat, or bird. He waits. The intonation from the device suggests, ]

Do you... do you speak to me? [ he breathes, nevertheless retaining his steel composure. He looks over his shoulder, but he does not expect to find the owner of the voice. He's just making sure.

This does not bode well. ]

[ He waits for the rest of the missive, but it does not come. He levels a steely look at the device and the person's face on it. He puts forth a rare show of honesty, slightly woven with self-contemplation even in his alarm. His voice is steely as well. ]

More cautious than afraid, and more curious than cautious.

[ a big pair of brown eyes and locks of orange hair stare right back, wide and unblinking, and after every moment that passes . . . the amount his brows begin to furrow increases.

[ He is not aware he is an unwitting participant in a staring contest, but the unblinking nature of the face on the screen subconsciously causes him to keep his eyes open and intense. Is this an illusion? Or is someone really staring at him?

He slowly extends a finger towards the face (knowing he shouldn't, because who knows what could come about) and pokes it. ]

[ See, Chizuru is very much experienced with this mindset, since the device was also so new and strange to her when she first showed up here.. So when this kind of odd video appears on the network, she actually does figure out what's going on pretty quickly.

It might be why she keeps her voice kind of soft, since she doesn't want to startle him with a sudden voice coming out of it!! ]

[ He certainly isn't wearing anything that would indicate he comes from an era of cellphones.

He is addressed directly, and that makes him jerk his hand back. He looks around, very intently. The voice came from the device. He knows it did. He wishes he wasn't so certain. It would be easier to be one of those men who believe that God can speak through holy relics and the like. Instead, Altaïr looks for the explanations to things from proven facts. He has experienced something like this, and he doesn't like that there is another device like it.

Whenever he is asked a question he does not want to answer, he answers with silence, retreating within the darkness of his hood. ]

[a (slightly less) hungover vi has scrolled the network to rest on this. she is lying on her side, mostly just a face, but now she's reaching toward the screen her timing a little off, but she is going to try and high five him if she can manage it.]

[ His hand touches--a screen, not another hand, but the illusion is coordinated enough with his own movements to give him pause. He draws his hand back.

Right. He can touch it without adverse effects. Probably. He reaches for it again. It is crooked, so he rotates the Omni until Vi's face is upright. He does not know that his own face will now not be.

Maria has not even bothered to test out her own version of these...things. Which isn't to say that she has no interest, but she'll leave him to handle it.

She hasn't been looming over his shoulder — that is both obnoxious and impractical when the derelict building in which they've taken temporary residence is by no means guaranteed to be secure against beasts — but she doesn't venture far as she makes a perfunctory inspection before returning. Altaïr frowns at the polished stone in his hand, one he thinks of more as a device due to a certain other object in his possession. Finally he sets it down on an upended crate and looks up at Maria.

"I have ensure it cannot listen to us while it is not in use," he says first, because that is extremely important. "It is... a device. Not dangerous like the Apple. It holds no temptation other than the desire to speak to others, as in the market. I do not know its secrets or the way in which this is possible, but these objects are apparently common among Sleepers. You received one as well."

[ He pauses. The art of actual conversation over the network has not yet sunk in, so he pauses as if contemplating a written message rather than a verbal one. (He has so many questions.) It's hard to believe the faces he's seeing are in real time. ]

I did not intend to show anything.

[ This much he knows. He does not know broadcast, but he knows 'public' and 'network.' ]

[D is busy at the staging point, but it's fairly boring work and he can multitask.

So he sends four crudely drawn maps. The first three are maps he sent to people for previous abandoned houses he was staying at previously but no longer has a use for. Two at the outskirts of Cellar Door, one in Crenshaw.

The last map is the one indicating the Staging Point for the outpost also located in Crenshaw.]

Surely this is a trap. Or... a cry for help. Who knows why someone would put this information in this device. These locations are to be inspected when he has time, but, knowing now that these devices are part of a network of present-day people who could follow his movements, he decides not to trust them. ]
