Video: UN - JustD

[OOC: This is this month's network post for stuff relating to the Outpost Haven location/player plot]

[The video is once again made from the Staging Point in Crenshaw for Outpost operations. This time it's focused on drawings of the current state of the location; there's a blood ward at the outer wall line and a barrier ward around the bunk house and garden. The outer wall is complete except for the gate and the bunkhouse is complete and has places for a couple dozen people to sleep if they don't mind how close everything is.

There are dotted lines detailing the next phase of construction.]

We're working on making an outpost about thirty miles west of Trench. The outer wall is mostly complete and there's a place to sleep but not much else just yet.

I'm providing food and lodging either in town or out there to anyone who helps with the outpost project whether that's construction, fighting beasts, or providing other skills or materials. Any earth or stone related abilities will be very useful and I'll offer trade items for anyone willing to help with that.

In addition to the materials we're gathering so far there's a useful substance made from Vileblood, Darkblood, and Coldblood that can fuse stone together when applied to the surface of a stone wall or used as mortar so we'll be trading for blood as well.

[ .. well. It's the first time Daniel is really hearing about this, as new and immediately busy as he has been ever since arriving here only a short while ago. And it's not that he thinks it's a bad project, but something about it does stand out enough to him to reply. ]

Is there no.. normal mortar in this place?

[ Does everything have to be weird and blood-related.

Does it really. ]

Normal mortar, yes. But not the kind that fuses stone blocks into a seamless or near-seamless structure.

We're a bit short on the manufacturing technology and supplies to make those.

[D's working with what he has here. He's still trying to find a good solution to plumbing and septic problems in the absence of organic matter reprocessing technology.]

Right. [ Daniel admits. He's still getting used to this place a little, but it's true that he hasn't really seen any construction going on. Did all these people here just.. build their houses with blood?

Maybe it's better to not think too hard about it. ]

I guess that makes sense.

[ Even if he'd rather not have it make sense. ]

I can imagine it must make this sort of thing a difficult project to complete in a place like this. [ At least, compared to Daniel's own world. The main concern there in getting this sort of thing done would be money, he assumes, whereas here there's even just a lack of usual materials or building techniques. ]

Going forward this mix will make structures sturdier. If we had volcanic ash I'd use that instead.

The only thing keeping us from medieval methods is magic and technology Sleepers bring.

[ Magic and technology, huh.. It's something Daniel thinks on for a faint moment before speaking on. ]

I'm not sure how much I can offer for either. I'm still not really sure about the entire magic deal here, for one. [ Read: he's hardly even discovered his blood powers yet.

It's been a wild, busy time ever since he arrived here, to a point where he hasn't had much time for it. ]

As for technology.. I mean, I've got a truck here, but I'm pretty sure there are more efficient magical ways to transport stuff in a place like this.

[ Especially since this place doesn't exactly have the best infrastructure for traffic. ]

[There's a lot to learn with blood magic and D is not all that thrilled with trying to do anything with paleblood.]

A truck? What kind of engine does it have.

[Hauling stuff around is useful, but honestly what the truck is made out of and the pieces itself might be more useful.]

What? [ He sounds a little surprised. ] Well, it's an old Chevy from the 40s..

[ .. even if that might not mean much to people from other worlds. But, look, Daniel has no idea how else to describe it? Most of the worlds he's hearing about here don't even have cars, let alone the same models as the one he comes from.

He doesn't get much further with his description though before he's shaking his head to snap himself out of his thoughts. ]

Wait, why are you asking?

I should have asked what kind of fuel it runs on.

[D has no idea what a chevy is and is only mostly certain 'the 40's is a time period and not a place or manufacturer.]

Well, it runs on gas, though that is.. obviously not quite as easy to get here.

[ No gas stations in a place that doesn't even have cars in the first place, after all. It's a good thing that he hasn't been driving with it much here - mostly since there hasn't been much opportunity to do so in the first place. These streets aren't exactly made for cars. ]

But considering the resources in this place, there's got to be something else that can make it work. I mean.. [ He pauses, showing that the next part of what he's about to say is clearly crazy, and Daniel definitely thinks so: ] There's magic everywhere here.

[ Something he's slowly getting used to, but maybe the weirdness of magic can do a good thing in this case by somehow finding some magical way to make his car run even after it's run out of gas. ]

Internal combustion engine. A little more utility than a steam engine but not as useful as most others.

If it breaks to the point that you can't drive it anymore there's a lot that could be done with its parts, but it's more useful in one piece even if this isn't made for driving.

[D pauses as he considers the problem of a lack of fuel.]

Making more fuel for it would be only a little less difficult than making a whole new truck.

[ There's a slight pause. It's like Daniel has been stunned into silence for a mere moment at the sheer thought of taking the vehicle apart. Thankfully it's not really what D is suggesting here, so he's not getting upset with the other, but.. dang, just the thought of it being taken apart is enough to make something in Daniel's chest ache. ]

I'm never taking it apart, no matter what happens with it.

[ He does sound kind of firm on that though. ]

It's more than just a car. It has.. [ He pauses, like he's trying to determine how much he wants to say about this to a total stranger, but then settles on: ] It has a lot of sentimental value. Especially here, so far away from home.

[ One of the few reminders he has left of the man who meant so much to him. Who means so much to him, even now. ]

[D doesn't have much sentimentality about anything, but he understands other people do. He won't suggest it again.]

I see.

If you can provide me with a small sample of the fuel it uses I'll see if more can be made.

... Huh?

[ Apparently Daniel didn't see that coming - especially not while he was too caught up in the idea of the car being taken apart for a moment, realising he now has something to be worried about that he never truly considered before..

But D's words snap him right out of it, even if it makes him both look and sound surprised as he replies. ]

Really? I mean.. [ He has no words for it.

In a good way though, since-- ] That'd be great!

[ More than great. That car means so much to him. ]

What do you want in return for it?

I don't know if I'll be able to get more or not yet, don't go bargaining for something I might not have.

You wouldn't need to give me anything. The sample of fuel will be enough.

[After all, if they can make more for the car, they can make more to use for other purposes.]

[ He chuckles, apparently having been put into a great mood even by just the very idea of this. ]

Oh, come on. Are people not allowed to be glad when someone gives them a kind offer?

[ Daniel is mostly just joking. It's evident in his tone. But the happiness behind it - that's very much genuine, even more so now D has even said he doesn't need something in return.

Daniel always likes meeting people who show kindness in that sort of way. Showing that there's merit to trusting people. ]

I'm just glad you're even willing to give it a try. I know a lot about cars, but a lot less about.. [ His voice trails off, before adding: ] You know. All the oddities of this place.

[ Like how all the blood and magic works here. ]

You should stop by sometime. Maybe we can figure something out together. And besides that, it's just a nice car to have seen for once! [ Daniel isn't even sure about what kind of world or time D is from, and has no idea how new or old or entirely foreign the car might be to him.. But still. ] It may be old by the standards of where I come from, but it's a real beauty.

[D sees it as less of a kind offer than a practical one, but he isn't going to correct that assumption.]

I can come by to see the car, but I'll have to take the sample to a few different people to get their expertise.

[His Left Hand might be able to make it in small amounts with the appropriate raw ingredients, but that's not really a solution. And encouraging his hand to make highly flammable substances seems like asking for trouble.]

Makes sense.

[ Mostly since Daniel figures that everyone has to figure out the rules of this world - though some people seem way ahead of him there, D most likely concluded, considering his entire outpost project.

But he figures that no one has tried to make fuel from scratch here yet, using the materials this world provides them with. So him having to ask others for help? That definitely makes sense. ]

I can definitely get you that sample. [ It's not even hard. ] I haven't exactly driven it much here, so there's plenty of gas left in the tank to examine. And if there's anything I can do for your project with the car in return once we figure out the fuel problem, you just got to let me know. It's the least I could do in return.

[ And, really.. it's not like Daniel ever really minds helping out. That's just the kind of person he is in the first place. ]

This place isn't set up very well for moving things by truck, but if something comes up I'll let you know.
