Telling someone you'll give them something of value if they'll give you something you perceive as important information is practically the definition of a bribe.

He knows that he can't just take something as important as intentional information that he asks for, without giving a reward in return. It's different from information that people just give him or that he observes quietly from afar, which is usually how it goes; he doesn't often outright ask people for things. The energy... has to be set into balance if he's going to do something like that. Of course, it's difficult for the demon to explain all of that, and so what it boils down to is— )

If they give it to you willingly, then there is no need to give anything in return. Asking a question to the masses doesn't mean they are obligated to answer. They are doing so on their own volition, without expecting any physical repayment. The satisfaction of feeling as though they helped another, or the connection and validation they may feel in sharing their own story, is usually the reward.

Your not being human makes sense. You can give a reward if it makes you feel better, or is some sort of need for your kind.

But I know I could care less about a gold coin. Emotional rewards are more fulfilling than physical ones.

( There are many different ways a thing can be "equal", but the demon's functioning is certainly geared towards "offering and reward" — a reward equal to an offering.

But what this person, and a few others have spoken of, is more... conversational. Not a reward, not businesslike, but something else. He likes the thought, is interested by it, even if it remains a little foreign. The way this person explains it through logic, makes sense. )
