Lucky for me, because I don't really like making my age or species known.

While I am similarly reluctant to share information about myself, I admit it would have been nice to meet people closer to my own age.

I did meet an older fisherman whose company I enjoyed, but he was still a mortal human.

I was human about nine hundred years ago, so I still have a little sympathy. It sounds like that's not the case for you.

But yeah no, I was never human. I just look like it.

Do you look like an old human or a young human?

Young, I tend to end up hanging about with college/university students. So I look like I'm in my early to mid twenties.

I have also maintained a youthful appearance, though the sea has changed me some. Do you spend much time with humans?

I do, yes. I spend most of my time around humans. There aren't really many of my kind that I know of.

Will you tell me what kind that is, or should I start guessing.

Guessing would be fun.

... But no, I'm a Japanese folklore creature.

Ah, I was hoping perhaps you were a loong, a dragon.

Right region of the world, wrong country. I don't think I've ever seen a dragon, though I've met some guardian lions/dogs of varying cultures as well as some shanxiao. The ones that are 'messengers of the gods' tend to not want to hang around us more 'earthly' creatures, especially since we question whether those gods exist or not. A lot.

Having spent many years spying in the Heavenly Court, I can confirm for you that plenty of gods exist. It's true they're all snobs, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if their messengers were like that too.

I've seen some evidence for their existence in my world and they're nothing but trouble.

But that's a whole story.

I would have to agree. But I would be interested to hear, if you would ever like to tell it over tea or drinks.

Maybe I'll tell it some time, when I can figure out how to pull it into a happier ending. I don't know how to do that, but I'll figure something out.

I don't need a happy ending. I never got one and I don't believe in them.
