About nine hundred.

[ He doesn't look it, which is probably also why he can accept that this kid is ageless too, even if that initial enthusiasm made him so doubtful. ]

Cool. There's lots of people here who are over a hundred, but I dunno how many are close to a thousand, or you know, older. There's a few of us, though, I think.

From responses here alone, it would seem that way. Some are even endless. [ He finds that mildly terrifying. ] And yet we all start lives anew here on the beach.

Yeah! I guess here we're all kind of endless anyway. I mean if something happens and you die, you just go back to being a squid again and come back from the ocean.

[He answers casually, as though it's nothing at all to be concerned about. All perfectly normal times in Trench.]

I've only died in dreams so far. [ Or whatever the Silent Hill Trench Evil Hotel was. ] But I understand we will continually reincarnate here. Perhaps one day the others will live to a very old age too.

I've been really, really lucky, I haven't died at all. One guy I know, he's died, like, a dozen times. He's really brave.

[It's a bit of an exaggeration. Johnny hasn't died quite that many times, but it feels like it's been a lot either way.]

Is that bravery? Or stupidity? To succumb so many times? I hope at least he always went down fighting.

[Billie shrugs. Johnny might frequently bite off more than he can chew, but it's usually for a good cause? Besides, Billie himself will gladly throw himself headlong into danger to help anyone who has ever been even a little nice to him.]

Yeah. He always comes back, though, so I mean, that's the important part, right?

I suppose. Still, even immortality doesn't justify risky behaviours.

Well, there's no real consequences though if you just come back.

Dying feels bad even if you survive it. Isn't that a sort of consequence? Loss itself feels traumatic.

Maybe. But I mean, sometimes it's worth it too if you can help someone else you really, really care about.
