Hi everyone. So, uh, I was talking to one of the younger Sleepers here about Halloween. She's never been trick or treating before - and I bet she's not the only one.

[She pauses for a brief second.]

Huh. I guess I should probably explain what that is - since we're all from different places, and I bet everyone has different traditions.

So at home, on the thirty-first of October, kids usually dress up in costume once it starts getting dark, and go around and knock on doors say 'trick or treat!' and people give them candy, or other treats. There doesn't really seem to be a shortage of kids around, and a lot of them are here without their parents - and there's the orphanage to think about too. I bet they've have never been trick or treating before in their lives, since it doesn't seem to be a thing here.

Anyway, I wanted to suggest that maybe we can put something together for them as a community - we'd need people to hand out candy and stuff, and probably people to make sure everyone stays safe too. I mean, from what I've heard, this isn't a regular Deerington October, but that doesn't mean we should totally let our guard down, right?

I figure it's probably a good way for anyone who knows about Halloween to get to do something that feels familiar for a night, and for anyone who doesn't know about it, it's a fun way to get out for a night and get our minds off... Well, everything else.

This sounds like a great idea! And a perfect way to spend my birthday!

I'll protect the kids but I want a 20% cut of any candy that they get.

Oh! That sounds like so much fun! I've never been trick-or-treating before! I've never even heard of Halloween before!

Oh, hey, that's your birthday? Yeah! That's a great way to celebrate!

Well, you know, some people at home used to give candy to the people escorting the kids too. I bet lots of people would give to you too, especially if they know you're suddenly a year older.

[Ruby, you don't really want to be taking candy from kids, do you? Willow raises her eyebrows.]

And if they don't, maybe I can recruit Oscar into helping me make a pan of brownies for you instead?

Hey, great! The more the better, right?

Most of the other Halloween traditions look like they're already happening here - people decorating, telling spooky stories, and carving pumpkins and stuff.

It is- For as long as I can remember!

You think so? I always managed to talk my sister and friends into giving me a little extra. It's one of the perks of being the younger sister.

[When it comes to candy she can be pretty darn cut throat.]

Woah- Woah. Okay. If we're putting brownies on the table I will definitely take that offer.

Have you ever had Oscar's brownies? They are to die for.

That's an awesome idea! I've been celebrating the coming of Halloween at the house, of course we should extend some of that to some of the Sleeper and local kids in Trench too!

You know, we could even ask Lysithea, our Sleeper confectioner and baker, if she'd be willing to donate some sweets to this, maybe even throw in some of the Halloween favorites, like bobbing for apples and a haunted house!

But they should be in costume, not only for the Halloween spirit but as a precaution for invading spirits.

Yeah, but if you're out with a bunch of kids, that makes you the oldest. So less likely to get extra and more likely to be asked for extra.

[Sorry, Ruby, with age comes responsibility.

She grins at the mention of Oscar's brownies.]

Yeah, me and Oscar have made brownies together before - he really is a great baker.

Hey, great! I'm gonna talk to some of the locals too, a lot of them seem really supportive of in general

Well, yeah, I think most people are taking to the costumes this month anyway, so we should be good on that point.

I don't know Lysithea, but yeah, if you want to check in with her and see if she can make some stuff for this, or if she wants to get involved too, that'd be great! Same if someone wants to organize other stuff too!

[Willow's focus is going to be on the trick or treating thing - she's a little unsure about how much Trench needs a haunted house, given... Well. Everything. But she's also not about to discourage Luz's excitement.]

I'll definitely do that! Getting and giving candies definitely sound like something that's right up her alley!

[Willow is probably correct about the haunted house thing, but Luz is one for safe and silly, and once she explains that, it'll at least seem less mean].

I think it's a great idea, people coming together to help the kids have a good time. Man, I didn't even know there was an orphanage here....

( Peter has, unsurprisingly, not been doing much wandering around. There are still so many places in this new world he has yet to learn about, but this idea of hers definitely tugs at his heart strings. )

Peter! Hey! It's good to see you too - Luna told me you were here.

The idea kind of hit me when I was talking to one of the new Sleepers - she got really excited at the idea of getting free treats just for knocking on doors, so I... kind of didn't have the heart to tell her it might not be a thing here.

And yeah, there's an orphanage - I've just heard about it, I haven't visited or anything. But I mean, everyone here has been really good to us so far, so this feels like a good way to give back too, you know?

Oh, hey, perfect! I'm sure they'll be glad to have the extra help, especially if you're already in the neighbourhood!

I'm definitely not gonna say no to some extra help here - I know it's all kind of last minute, but the more of us that can pitch in, the better we can make it, right?
