I don't know how many of you out there remember a man named Kurt Wagner. He used to talk about places like this as a sort of second chance. Doesn't necessarily mean anything we do here impacts who we are back where we come from; it's just an easy space to rewrite ourselves if we didn't like how the story was unfolding before.

I wasn't really looking to start a blank page. Had it pretty good before. Not before-before, but in the place before this. I guess all that's gone now. Eventually, you've got to admit that some things just aren't coming back.

Anyway, that's not what this is about. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind reminiscing a bit. But I'd rather do it face to face over a bottle of something. Maybe give a toast to the people who found their way back out. I hope they don't remember a second of it.

Point is I've always got a better idea of who I am when I'm being useful, so I guess it's well past time I try that out. It's a variety of stuff life's let me hone my skills at, needs must and all. But if there's something else you need doing, get in contact and I'll see what I can do for you.

It's a good feeling to be useful. Haven't had much experience deciding for myself what I might like to do. I keep coming around to the fact that I'm just better when I'm with other people.

Shouldn't be a problem, if I can take a look at the bore of the rifle. You can show me what sign you know then, too. Who taught you before?

I had a friend help me with it in the last place I stayed in. We both couldn't speak for a while, so some people thought it was a good idea. Her name's Rapunzel. [ pause, ] There's a Rapunzel here too, but they're not the same person.

You were in a place like this one before too? Did it have a name? I've had the same thing happen. Or worse, when someone shows up who knows you, but they're from a different point in time.

It's probably just a matter of time before something like that happens here. Either not being able to speak, or it being too dangerous to try. Never a bad idea to have a language that not everyone else might know, too.

Oh, two places! An island called South Sister and somewhere else called Santa Rosita, in California. It was 1961 there, but I don't know the year in South Sister. It was more advanced, though.
