[Video 01] UN: Delilah Dirk - Arrival

[What appears on camera is a number of things in very short order. Someone is very clearly coming to grips with the technology. There is a flash of skirt, booted leg, of a woman's face tanned from a long time under the sun, and a mass of chestnut hair. Finally, a pair of deep brown eyes focus on it.]

What the bloody hell is this thing?

[She hasn't been pulled from any universe before - first time for her - and in any event, the technology is so advanced it's just one step away from magic for her. But it's not magic, because that would be silly.]

Is it on? That's what the light means, doesn't...? Right.

[She steps back a bit, moving this way and that as if trying to arrange the right angle. And then she begins.]

What the hell was any of that? I'd say someone slipped me some rather potent hash-hish if it weren't for that beach and those...odd ducks who welcomed me.

[She won't mention waking up naked. That had been an experience she wouldn't like to repeat. Or the part where she'd tried to run and had stumbled about like a toddler. None of that gets mentioned. Frankly, she's sitting at the junction of freaked out and amazed.]

So where am I? Who's responsible? And where the hell is my boat?

[She'll find the flying ketch soon enough - it just wasn't moored when the tide came in.]

[Well they're getting to be a habit at this point, really. And it takes a while for things to come back - she's never texted before. The typewriter won't be invented for another fifty-odd years where she's from.]

What is a Pthumerian? Some sort of Pharaoh? Something Egyptian?

And what is a 'phone'?

They're really powerful apparently.
What's a Pharaoh.
For that matter, what's Egyptian?

Ah, you're from somewhere without them.
You message people on them, and they message you back.

I'm pretty sure you don't mean alien the way I know it.

And an ancient culture, Pharaohs were their rulers.

If it explains anything, the most advanced machinery I have ever seen is a little wind-up automaton that plays a dulcimer.

But considering that tech level you just said almost certainly not.
Boy, you're from way back in that case, aren't you?

So yeah, the crystal sends messages, in text, sound and can show you in person.
But all you're going to be getting from me is texts so you know.
I'm not exactly much of a talker, hah.

I object most stridently to that accurate assessment. If I'm from the past, then I'm clearly a classic.

Texts. Strange choice of word - that means books, plural. But this place is definitely a massive learning curve.

Hah, well you're not from my past believe me.
It's kind of easy to tell anyone who's ever lived in Remnant a mile away.
But sure we'll go with a classic.
Classics are good.

Texts are for short messages.
Like passing notes between each other.
Books are still books.

And oh. Then why not just call them notes?

Lot of worlds out there, apparently.
That'll take getting used to, trust me.

Cause we call em texts, duh.
I think it's meant to be short for "Text Message" instead of "Voice Message."
They also can be pretty fast for notes.

Well that's a surprise. And ought to ruin a few preachers' days that I know.

Ah well, if it works, it works, I suppose.

You have no idea.
I've seen a couple of the preachy ones in the nightmare.
They don't do so hot, as you can guess.

Hey, whatever works works.
We've all got our preferred ways.

Good. Useless bunch, by and large. Hand out and mouths far too wide open.

I like that way of putting it.
We mostly have the greedy shits back where I come from.
Folks aren't too religious in Remnant.

[It was kind of hard to be when your gods left you and your world was full of monsters. Sort of put a damper on that kind of thing, so folks had folklore more than anything else.]

Never put much stock in people who tell everyone else how to be while never accomplishing anything themselves.
