video; un: Oracle
[The video flicks on and a girl in a blue denim jacket with pointed ears and round glasses struggles with positioning it right, even as the video is already playing. She takes a step back, sitting in a chair opposite the camera on a desk that's just full of papers.]
Um, hi. I think it's recording? Yeah, it's recording... Hello. [She clears her throat and adjusts her glasses. She speaks with a nervous somewhat nasally british accent that rings of 'very educated and also somewhat traumatized by it'.] So, I wanted to make something of an introduction, since I've heard that people show up a lot here. It's a bit overwhelming, the amount of information there is to learn about this place, but I'd like to get through it as quickly as possible.
My name is Adaine Abernant. Back home I was something called the Oracle, which is a title that was sort of just... dumped on me, but it does have meaning. Uh, basically it means I get prophetic visions, both of the future and events happening in the present. [Technically it's the 'Elven Oracle', but here's the thing. Fuck Fallinel and fuck the elven government.] On top of that, I was also a student at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy and a wizard of the Divination school, which works similarly to how Paleblood magic seems to work, at least from my initial observations.
So, uhm, the point of all of that is that if you have something you'd like to find out, a prophesy, or something to find, I might be able to help. I'm still figuring out how to work it now that it's all mixed with Trench's native blood magic. And as an adventurer, I'm also used to helping people out if they're in trouble or there's a largescale threat.
[She pauses and peers down at one of the papers, a list of some sort, and then continues.]
...On top of that, and the larger point of all this is, I'd like to learn as much about Trench's magic, metaphysics, cosmology and society as possible. I'm doing my own research, obviously, but if anyone wants to share their own notes or experiences, or even just point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

[Look, Luz was a girl who believed in the life all of all creatures and everything, but a DRAGON. How did you take down a dragon without dying]?
Oh, ok. I can't say I've ever been before. What's that like?
[So pretty much just questions out of Luz right now].

It's... a long, long story. [17 whole episodes.] But we won because we had a stolen artifact, a watch that could stop time. My friend... died, I think? I was unconscious at the time. She went to heaven, where our principal had, um... knocked the God of the Sun out and was... running things secretly?
[This is a stupid story, maybe.]
Anyway, he broke out of the Seven Heavens with my friend, shot an angel or two, told her that she had that ultra powerful watch around her neck that she'd forgotten about and uh... stopped time for twelve hours so we had time to prepare, since we'd entered the fight seriously depleted. And... from there it was just sort of a matter of attacking it with spells and magical weapons.
My friend Riz actually got the final blow, which is fair because the dragon in question, um, ate his dad. [IT WAS A LOT MORE BADASS THAN SHE'S MAKING IT SOUND, HELP.]
...I'm not much of a storyteller.
A-anyway. The School of Mutter's just a giant spooky academy. There's lots of classes here, and a lot of records, though I don't think there's a point of graduation? It's like, learning for learning's sake. It's in the Arcane Scholar's sect of the city, under the dominion of Never Mind. He's the principal, I think?

That is a super crazy story. I can see why you might have been brought here after all! I have to admit, it's kind of hard to imagine since getting to heaven and fighting a God and stuff is mostly unbelievable in my world. Most of the time, it just doesn't happen.
I feel bad for your friend Riz though. It can't be easy to be missing your dad and know that a monster went and ate him.
[How exactly did you offer apologies for something another fantastical being did anyway]?
And you're allowed to board there? I didn't know they offered that! I wouldn't have taken it of course, but good to know.
Is Never Mind nice?

But yeah, he... only found out while we were investigating. It's sad. Out of my friends, he's one of the few of us with like, a pretty good dad.
[Mostly. Not that Adaine has much room to analyze the pros and cons of Pok Gukgak's distant but loving parenting style.]
Oh, I... haven't asked. I don't need to sleep so, I just meditate every 24 hours or so. I haven't spoken to Never Mind himself either. I don't think he's nice, per se, he seems largely just knowledgable. I can respect it.

That is sad. I have good dad figures here, even if their morals are a bit dubious.
[As in all of them, honestly].
That is respectable. Wait, you don't need to sleep? How come?

My adopted father was a drug dealer when I met him, and my friend's dad is a demon – er, devil from the Nine Hells, so I understand that. [She has much more of a problem with that than her friends do.]
Oh, the lack of sleep is just a biological thing. We can sleep, but we don't need to. I only have to meditate for four hours a night, which they're allowing me to do at the Academy.

Your world sounds very disruptive! Are things like that all over the place?
Oh, well. That's nice. That you don't need sleep, I mean. I went without sleep for days at a time several months ago. It was not a good time.
cw for implied sleep deprivation
[Most people are not as fucking off the wall insane as Arthur Aguefort.
Her expression does somber a little at the mention of going without sleep. Because... oh boy is that a familiar line of conversation.]
...Yeah, but we're still vulnerable to exhaustion. I'm sorry you had to go through that, though. It's really awful. [Aelwyn's case was a bit more extreme than a few days, but still. One of her best friends is an insomniac.]
Re: cw for implied sleep deprivation
[Luz was pretty sure tearing out the sun would mean instant death for many, many reasons].
It was pretty bad, and the people in the house were pretty worried!
Sadly, that was the mildest bad thing to happen to me in Trench, other than seeing all those ghosts the next month.
