video; un: Oracle
[The video flicks on and a girl in a blue denim jacket with pointed ears and round glasses struggles with positioning it right, even as the video is already playing. She takes a step back, sitting in a chair opposite the camera on a desk that's just full of papers.]
Um, hi. I think it's recording? Yeah, it's recording... Hello. [She clears her throat and adjusts her glasses. She speaks with a nervous somewhat nasally british accent that rings of 'very educated and also somewhat traumatized by it'.] So, I wanted to make something of an introduction, since I've heard that people show up a lot here. It's a bit overwhelming, the amount of information there is to learn about this place, but I'd like to get through it as quickly as possible.
My name is Adaine Abernant. Back home I was something called the Oracle, which is a title that was sort of just... dumped on me, but it does have meaning. Uh, basically it means I get prophetic visions, both of the future and events happening in the present. [Technically it's the 'Elven Oracle', but here's the thing. Fuck Fallinel and fuck the elven government.] On top of that, I was also a student at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy and a wizard of the Divination school, which works similarly to how Paleblood magic seems to work, at least from my initial observations.
So, uhm, the point of all of that is that if you have something you'd like to find out, a prophesy, or something to find, I might be able to help. I'm still figuring out how to work it now that it's all mixed with Trench's native blood magic. And as an adventurer, I'm also used to helping people out if they're in trouble or there's a largescale threat.
[She pauses and peers down at one of the papers, a list of some sort, and then continues.]
...On top of that, and the larger point of all this is, I'd like to learn as much about Trench's magic, metaphysics, cosmology and society as possible. I'm doing my own research, obviously, but if anyone wants to share their own notes or experiences, or even just point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

[ Though Moss King has been an interesting one, considering he showed up in Deerington as well. But for now... ]
Argonaut presides over April. He's the patron of hope, trust, and curiosity, so...
[ He lapses into a moment of thought. ]
Not every month in Trench is equally awful. Argonaut may give us a relatively peaceful month - something that requires us to rely on one another, perhaps, or to investigate assorted curiosities.
Then again, he's also the patron of resilience - so perhaps we can look forward to a month of torture and misery.

[She hums.]
Have you met any of the patrons?

[ But he's decided against putting too much faith in the Deer Country powers that be. As for her next question: ]
A few of them. Never Mind, Remina, and Argonaut are all easy to track down; the first two aren't hard to find around the school. Cloverfield was roaming the beach on October, some people were trapped inside the Tower in November, and...
[ ... ]
Well. I've spoken to Mother Mercy before, but well before she assumed the 'Mother Mercy' identity.

[She blinks at the statement about Mother Mercy.]
They had prior identities? What was hers?

[ Who are all related but entirely different stories. He'll stick to Mother Mercy for now. ]
Has anyone mentioned Julia Sodder to you yet? She was the half-Pthumerian responsible for the Dream some Sleepers were trapped in before awakening in Trench.
no subject
So... she created the Dream? Intentionally?
no subject
[ Welp, time to relay this story once again. ]
Mother Mercy used to go by Mother Superior, and the short answer is that she's Julia Sodder's grandmother. Julia's control over her powers was never very steady, and eventually Mother Superior elected to place her in a medically induced coma to try to control her. But Julia's powers just raged out of control, the Dream was created, and she began to draw Sleepers into the dimension with her.
Mother Superior always disliked the Sleepers and she made that known to us - frequently, and often violently. It seems she's less vehement in her dislike than she once was.

[Adaine hastily begins to note all this down, tapping her pen thoughtfully after she's done.]
How long has it been since the Dream then? If she's changed that much?
no subject
[ Ford will give Adaine a moment, makes sure she has time to write this down, and then: ]
But she didn't change on her own. When the Dream was falling apart, Cynthia - you would know her as the Moon Presence - killed her and forced her to be reborn in this world, like the rest of us.
no subject
Do you think she's still a threat?
no subject
I suspect she's a threat in the way that any Pthumerian could be - particularly given that she's perhaps the oldest of the ones we know. As for whether she wants to be...
[ Ford offers her a shrug. ]
Her death in the Dream may not have killed her in a permanent sense, but it clearly rendered a massive change in her - just like dying did to Cynthia, Roderick, and Julia.

She just got worse. I think, and this is just... me being overly cautious, it's probably best to be careful if she was really that bad.

[ Even though he's given a pretty measured summary of the Pthumerians before, he knows how these things tend to go. ]
The Pthumerians aren't human, so we can't necessarily judge them by the same standards. An improvement for her could very well be disastrous for us.
