[There was some adjusting before the young and very pale girl sat back, looking past as if something was holding whatever was recording-]
Just keep it steady, Dinah!
[-letting out a breath then, sitting on a spread blanket and a basket just in view beside her covered with a cloth.
That was definitely a few gravestones in the background. All the same, Alice kept her tone surprisingly bright, even calm.]
Hello, I'm Alice. I know some of you are still popping in and out of the catacombs- or perhaps you're waiting for someone else to come up? Well, I live nearby and figured some of you might like some food after what bits of horror can be going on down there.
Food can be very comforting after all, right?
[A tap of a finger against the basket's side.]
I've a few hand pies of various flavors, along with more savory empanadas that someone kindly taught me about, and how to make. Hopefully I am very easy to spot if you are already out here! If not, I can try to come to you.
[She might look familiar to those who have met her darker haired twin also named Alice.]
Ah- I've also some tea on hand, if any desire a cup.
Just keep it steady, Dinah!

You could say that I was never really born- and I'm not really human despite how I look. I have spent all of my life within a dimension known as the Abyss, and had full control over the powers within- there were even stories the Dolls would tell people in order to take advantage of a human to glutton itself on the flesh of other humans until dragging the one who made the deal in to the Abyss once their time ran out; if they killed enough people they could meet me and be granted their most desired wish. [A hum, taking a moment to sip her own cup of tea-] Most were driven mad long before they ever succeeded, of course. Perhaps that is going a little ahead in the story.
I simply came in to being, and was formed within the Abyss as I am now. [A simple way to tell it, not speaking of the pregnant woman sacrificed to die and the Abyss taking that to create two young girls, given it was partly the woman's wish to give the Presence there a body or a companion. Only one of the girls was kept within the dimension-] I was, however, trapped within it knowing there was an outside world, and my only connection to that was my sister.
She often let me take control of her body so I could experience some things, by switching souls. [If she minded Maul's table manners? It didn't show- mostly because she'd certainly had tea with those of far worse eating habits. Easily directing the teapot, plates, and everything else to resettle for a moment without need to look at them.] That is how I know what some things taste like.
This place has shown me all sorts of different foods, different tastes and smells that com with cooking- even baking. It has been nice. I'm not sure if I need to eat, or drink... but I like to. It's comforting in the simplest of ways. [Her head tipped-] You are welcome to more of those, by the way, if one does not do it.

[He says, mumbling the words through his last bite of the first empanada. He starts in on the second, gnawing this one a little slower now that his initial hunger has been satisfied.]
That is fascinating. I have never quite heard of anything like that before. So one of you was in the Abyss and the other in a completely different world? Did the Abyss grant you your powers then?

A small step, proving a little more to herself she could do far more than destroy. That here she could help, through use of both power and skills learned. A combination that she could grow in to something far more than what was forced upon her.
Alice tapped a finger to her lower lip, just a moment to think.] The Abyss was attached to the world- two realities chained together, if one fell the other would follow. She in that outside world, and I in the Abyss. She and I always connected.
You could say it did- but in another way, I was made to contain the powers the Abyss held. To control the way it could influence past and future. Create or destroy. [Her own cup was picked up again, turning it in her hands slowly.] An entire world of power, unimaginable and dangerous, all at my whim. I could change an event in the past, I could see the future it would bring.
Yet I could not do something as simple as free myself from that place, because the Abyss did not want me to leave it. It was lonely, and I was its only friend. [A prison, and the only home she'd ever known.] The Abyss connected to so many worlds, to so many timelines. So many, many stories come and gone.

[He says 'seem' since he's not certain how old Alice actually is given she told him she's not actually a human being. She could be four hundred years old for all he knows. But it still seems like that would be something that would weigh heavily upon anyone no matter how young or old.]
So this Abyss, it was sentient to an extent? It could control what you did and did not do?

[From the very moment she came in to awareness, it was all she had known. Time was a funny thing, especially within the Abyss. She looked young, acted her age- well, perhaps extremely under socialized, but that too was a part of how she grew.
Her gaze dropped down, watching as the tea within her cup turned black with specks of golden light floating within, and a bit above it. Swirling. Alice kept the teacup within her hands, the corner of her mouth quirked up in to a soft smile.]
It was, yes. A very lonely force of will, an intention- an awareness that I kept company. It was the only thing keeping me there, my jailor of sorts, as I was its sole companion. [She moved the teacup then, letting it rest on the palm of her hand, the other moving as the liquid within rose upwards, moving with her fingers as a guide. A small spot that looked like a black abyss, filled with so many golden lights.]
I, however, was able to control it to do so many things outside of freeing myself. It is why so many killed just for the chance of finding me so that I may grant their wishes. [Her gaze lifted, pupils slit-] Most were driven mad before they were dragged to their fates within the Abyss, wrapped in all of the pretty lies the Dolls told them.

[Maul has read a lot of Earth literature and a bit from other universes in his time here in Trench and before in Deerington as well. Myths and fairy tales had common motifs and he was drawn to them, so he has read many a tale of genies, gods, and other fantastical beings held captive while still wielding immense power no others could.
Such might find this young girl bizarre, strange, or creepy but Maul has seen too much to be surprised, even by Alice's strange tale and odd mannerisms.]
Did you ever free yourself from there? Or did it only come when you were drawn to this place?
