[ Her accent is unmistakenly American. ]

Anyway. I'm Laurel Lance and I've been here for a little over a week now. Not going to lie, it's been a lot to take in, but I think I'm getting there. I just have a couple of questions for people.

Firstly, where has the best coffee?

Secondly, is there a gym or something like it around?

Last but not least, I'm wondering if there's a need for legal advice in this place. I'm a lawyer back home.

Yeah, just finished my undergrad.

Uhm, civil rights. My dad's a city attorney and the idea of doing that makes me wanna die. Not that it really matters now.

Civil rights is a great choice. [Laurel smiles again.] You know, I almost became a city lawyer but decided against it. Went to work at not for profit for a while.

[She thinks for a moment.]

Well, if you ever want to talk about law stuff, I can do that. I know you can't get a degree here, but maybe you could learn something new?

I like to think do. The world is really fucking unfair. [The world's most foul mouthed law student, ladies and gentlemen.] What was it like doing the not for profit? Depressing?

Thanks. I'm not sure there's a huge demand for lawyers here, but who knows. In the meantime I'm studying as much as I can about this place at the School of Mutter. You should check it out, the Archive is HUGE.

I'm starting to get the impression lawyers aren't a necessity but learning more about this place is a priority for me too. Where is this uh, School of Mutter? If you don't mind giving me directions.

Oh! It's in the Gaze district. It's got one of the magic lamps, so you can use the one you got in your bag when you arrived to travel there. Otherwise you can totally walk, it's got this huge ass clock tower that you can see from far off.

Yeah, for a hot minute when I was a kid. It didn't last long, it sucked pretty hard.

What? No. No, I was like, eight or nine, who cares.

Oh, yeah. When they couldn't get tax exempt status they were all gonna Heaven's Gate it. I tried to leave but I got trapped in this bubble thing. It's okay, though, the Super Best Friends showed up and there was like this big statue fight and I got away.

I-wow. That's quite the story, and I'm glad you were able to get away from the situation.

[ Worrying details aside, there is one thing that jumps out at her.]

"Super Best Friends?" Are they like a crime fighting group or superheroes?

But I know in other worlds superheroes exist! The place I was before this had a few.

My world has superheroes too. I also heard about this other place that people were in before here, but I don't much in terms of details yet.

Oh, yeah, uh, Deerington. I heard it was a nightmare being had by a little girl or something. People died a lot, I guess.

Uh. No, they weren't assholes.

[ Well, maybe Oliver sometimes. ]

That sounds like the plot of a horror movie. If I'm being honest. [A pause.] But were the deaths permanent?

No, my friend says they came back. Like here, but less pleasant. Not that I'm in an ass-burning rush to find out, you know?
