[Good late morning, Trench. Have a REALLY excited Usagi (what else is new) who is finishing up wrapping something with a giant pink bow. She waves to the camera.]

HEY EVERYONE!

[She grins wide and big, fang-free for those who might be aware of what she's been going through the past few months.]

Do you know what today is?... Don't say Sunday.

NO! TODAY IS MAKOTO KINO'S BIRTHDAY!

YES! That's right! The amazingly beautiful, strong, talented, protective, best cook in all of Trench and I WILL fight you on that if you try to argue with me otherwise Makoto Kino has her birthday today!

So don't hesitate to wish her a happy birthday!

And for those of you who DO want to get her a gift... not that she expects one because she's Makoto and she's super humble like that, but if you want to get her something! Then she likes any and all cooking supplies, anything with pink roses on them, or hey pink roses themselves, or potted plants, and tigers!

Getting a cherry pie this time of year might be... hard.

Oh, really?

Is there nowhere to get cherries around here?

Cherries don't tend to grow in snow, no.

Maybe someone's picked them by now.

Or. OR! Maybe Fern can grow them somehow!

Or they died on the vine. But either way, I can't bother Fern for everything, Luz.

Does that really bother him though? Fern is a really good person. Besides, if I told him it was for Makoto, I can't see him feeling all exasperated about it.

I try not to bother him a lot myself.

You can be an amazing person and still get tired of being asked to do something over and over or worse, having people just assume things about it, Luz-chan. Fern IS a really amazing person, but even so, he's also a person.

So then you understand why I'm trying NOT to bother him for this, right?

What I mean is, you can always ask, and be polite about it. I don't assume he's always going to grow stuff for me because he might not feel like it. Obviously there's SO much to Fern than just him growing stuff, and if he felt like that was what we were using him for, he'd tell us, or I'd just stop asking him.

But to give a friend a birthday treat? I don't think he'd be super mad about it. Besides, he holds you to a pretty high regard, so I'd at least see what he thinks.

[She's trying not to get frustrated at this feedback loop they've somehow gotten into when Luz is literally just saying what Usagi keeps saying and Usagi keeps saying what Luz is saying. She takes a deep breath. So, Usagi is going to end it here with a:]

I will ask him if I remember to with everything else I'm doing.

[And leave it at that. Because she wasn't about to keep tapping Fern for food, bestie's birthday or not. She would figure out the cherries thing since Luz had asked if USAGI needed anything for MAKOTO and then clearly Luz's only solution is "go ask Fern." She thought Luz had been offering to help, but apparently not. So, moving on, somehow this conversation has gotten about Fern and Usagi needs to focus on the birthday girl.]

Anyways, if that's all, see you around.

[It wouldn't have been Luz's ONLY solution, it was just the easiest. It didn't mean Luz wouldn't go looking herself, but she wanted to be clear that she wouldn't just go to Fern asking him to create stuff all the time. That would just be rude, and there was more to him than that.

Not that she needed to tell Usagi this, of course].

When would you need the cheeries by, Usagi-chan?

Well her birthday is today... so... Um but whenever is fine?

Right! Ok! Give me, um, about an hour! See you in a bit!

[She says an hour, but it actually takes two. Once Luz arrives at Usagi's the girl can see why. Apparently Luz had underestimated how hard it was to both find cherries and how easy it was to get to them, so Usagi will see branches in the girl's hair and some scratches on her arm].

Got them! That was...an adventure! But here they are!

[It takes a while for Usagi to get the door as she's cleaning and setting up for the party but she does answer and her eyes widen when she sees the state Luz is in.]

OH MY GOSH! Are you okay?!

Oh, me? I'm fine, I'm good! I mean, the brambles sticking in my skin hurt and I think I might have scratched myself pretty good, but this the kinda stuff you expect when you get stuff in the wild!

[How Snow White did it and looked so put together was beyond her. Clearly the animals have to help. She brought out a bag of the cherries though].

Will this be enough?

You- you didn't have to do this, Luz! [She begins to gently pry some of the twigs out of her hair and grabs her hand.] Come on, I have some bandaids and antiseptic.

No, no, you made a good point about not asking Fern for stuff, and I did say I would get some. I DO need to not take advantage of that situation and learn to forage myself! What if some weird crisis I haven't thought of happens?

[Luz winces as she pulls one ensnared branch. Oh yeah, pain].

Oh, that's...I mean, actually, good idea.

[Luz was used to administering aid for other people, meanwhile the girl regularly got banged up herself all the time. Just about anyone she was close to in the Boiling Isles could attest to that].

[Usagi takes Luz into the house, taking her to the kitchen and sitting the younger girl down on a stool before pulling out a first aid kit from one of the kitchen cupboards.]

Pretty sure foraging doesn't mean you bring half the forest back with you, Luz-chan. [She pulled out some antiseptic wipes and bandaids, setting them on the table.]

What hurts the most?

[Luz sat down obediently and was pretty much trying to play off the pain. Luz honestly did tend to get herself in these kinds of scrapes a LOT, and even more so for people she cared about.

Just ask Amity Blight].

It was just cherries...mixed with some slight bodily peril.

[Luz was about to shrug and play it off, but she actually was starting to really feel the ugly red scrapes at her knees].

My knees. Must have been when I hit those thorns on the way down.

[Usagi rolled up Luz's pant legs and winced at the sight.]

Geeze, Luz-chan.

[She put on some gloves from the kit.]

You don't have to pretend you're not hurt, Luz-chan. What if these got infected? [She began to wipe the wounds clean with some gauze.]

Well, I'm kind of used to being accident prone! I just figured- ahh this was just another one of those times!

[Of course, Luz probably should think about what an infection might mean in a place like this over what it would be like somewhere else].

I just thought I'd bandage them up later? After I got home? That seemed like a good enough plan.

[Usagi has, over the years of living with Chibiusa, perfected her mom look. This is why it's currently being landed at Luz before she reaches up and pinches Luz's cheeks.]

No.

WAUGH!

[Ok, she deserved that, and Luz knows it by the look she gives after].

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

I don't accept that excuse from Varian or Fern, I'm not about to accept it from you.

You need to consider yourself in these things. If Varian came home looking like this and was ignoring his wounds, you would be annoyed.

You matter, Luz.

[She finished wrapping up and bandaging the wound, moving on to the other knee.]

You can't take care of other people if you don't take care of yourself, first.

I was doing fine until I missed that high branch!

[And then fell on the ones below. Now Luz looked a little abashed].

I guess you're right. I just tend to have these things happen to me all the time, so I take care of them later.

[It IS a bad habit of hers though, something she's brought from even before Deerington].

I guess I could start taking my own advice...

[Usagi is unimpressed by that rebuttal. She's half-tempted to pinch Luz's cheeks again but refrains as she takes the tweezers to the wound, pulling out some small bits of wood and grass.]

Yes, you should start taking your own advice. [She pulled out the antiseptic once the wound was clean of debris.]

And the people who care for you would like it if you did too.
