Yeah, of course.

[It was... easy, to feel relaxed around this utter stranger somehow. Perell wasn't one necessarily to do much socializing, but it was good to see new faces and make new friends, no matter what. Life had dealt him a strange hand, no matter what world he was in.

There was no reason to just sit down frozen in frustration over it.

He gripped Obi-Wan's hand in return, still feeling awkward but a little more confident.

Yeah. He could do this.]

So. Um. What kinda things do you do when you're not posting interesting photos on the network and meeting with strangers in bars down by the shore?

[jedies]

[ obi-wan gently leads him to a stool before settling himself next to perell. ]

Oh, not much. I do some meditation and saber exercises. Some patrols around Trench in case anyone needs help. Check up on people.

[frogiturgy]

[How... nice. How kindly. Perell felt a little embarrassed-- but, it had been so long since he had even attempted a casual outing like this. Maybe he was just out of practice.]

Meditation and saber exercises? That sounds a lot like what a friend of mine does. With less sabers... and probably more talking to animals, rocks, or plants.

[It was Vyng, of course. The Druid was his main reference for affairs involving meditation...]

Patrolling and checking up on people sounds like a fine, noble task. You said before that you're a General-- do you do all this because of the title or something else?

[jedies]

Well, I do a little of that too.

[ not so much rocks, unless they're sentient in some way of course. ]

No, I do it because I am a Jedi. It's what I've been trained and taught to do. My calling, so to speak.

[frogiturgy]

I see.

[He nodded, truly intrigued, and resisted the urge to start rattling off questions. There was no need to repeat a certain... Soup incident, after all.]

Sorry, sorry. Let's back up-- what is a Jedi?

[jedies]

We're peacekeepers. We're raised to respect the Light Side of the Force and keep the galaxy in balance. That means helping others reach peaceful solutions instead of conflict or aiding those who cannot protect themselves.

[frogiturgy]

So... you're like a knight, or a paladin from the adventure novels. The ones that aren't about exploring distant ruins and getting into trouble, anyway.

That's a... a very noble and selfless calling. Very admirable.

[He chuckled.]

But there's probably not too many of you, are there? I know I couldn't life like that.

[jedies]

Well, we do that too, sometimes. We cover a number of roles.

[ and they definitely play archaeologist and explorer if need be. his expression turns briefly somber. ]

No. There are less and less of us every day.

[frogiturgy]

That sounds...

[Chilling. Unnerving. Like the days before all he knew was actual darkness, when dear friends and distant associates alike seemed to disappear into the ether between shadows. So many of the people he knew and the prolly he had worked with vanished...

He still didn't have the answers to how they did it or where they went... If they were alive at all.]

Uncomfortable. Is it by choice, or is something causing that to happen?

[jedies]

It's because we're in the midst of a war. With many of us serving as generals, less and less of us return home.

[frogiturgy]

... That's very unfortunate to hear.

[... No matter the world, it was always the same song and dance.]

It's really a shame how often people use others to do the dirty work that they don't wanna touch. The same kind of thing happened to a lot of people I knew.

We weren't soldiers or anything, but we were asked to make tools that warring kingdoms used to fight each other.

... Eventually they turned the weapons they were given on the people who made them, instead of doing the normal thing and working it out with each other.

[jedies]

[ he sighs. ]

It does seem to be a malaise that follows every world. If everyone worked together, then perhaps . . .

[frogiturgy]

Perhaps it wouldn't be like this. But, we wouldn't exactly be who we are either.

[Everything has a price. Somewhere in the cosmos, something shifts with every decision made. It wasn't his role to be privy to the full scale of these matters, but that was basic science.

Nothing was free.]

What about the lighter aspects of being a Jedi? You sound like you've got a lot of interesting stories to tell.

[jedies]

[ the force does work in mysterious ways. he smiles faintly. ]

Oh, plenty. I've been to many worlds and that tends to lend itself to incredible experiences.

[frogiturgy]

It sounds like it does.

[He chuckled, a tad embarrassed.]

Somehow, I never strayed too far from the riverways I grew up in-- and I've lived for a long time. Meeting all of the different people here in Trench does make me wonder about what else could be out there...

[jedies]

[ it's not unheard of. many people don't leave their planets. still he's curious. ]

Did you never feel the urge to travel before?

[frogiturgy]

Well... I was a ferryman before life gave me a big change. I was on the rivers and away from my family a lot, so once my life settled a bit it was just simpler to build my tower in the same region.

[he offered a small, chagrined smile.]

It's not like I didn't go anywhere, but I didn't like leaving my research unattended for too long. And the riverways had everything I needed, so it was an easy choice.

[jedies]

Fair enough.

[ the jedi have always traveled. true, they call the temple their home, but the idea is home is with them wherever they go. even now, disconnected from his galaxy, obi-wan can still feel his bonds through the force. ]

What kind of research did you pursue?

[frogiturgy]

Ah-- sorry! I should clarify.

[But he was grinning, like someone about to engage in an infodump as a means of showing affection.]

I study ecosystems and the biology of the organisms living in it as part of my... craft. Mammals, amphibians, some birds and fish... The swamps in particular always interested me. You grow up hearing enough stories about what lurks within them, and you can't help but become a little curious about the mysteries.

[It was a half-truth, born of his own identity crisis that had yet to resolve. Knowledge was a necessary part of any transmutation workings... but, could he even claim to be a wizard of those magics were beyond his reach now both in the world he called his home and within Trench?]

[jedies]

That is rather impressive.

[ and he means that. though obi-wan is no scientist, the workings of creatures and their lifecycles is a part of qui-gon's training and one he took to much later in life. ]

My personal experience in swamps is something is usually trying to eat me.

[frogiturgy]

Please. Playing with frogs and moss with some friends isn't that impressive!

[But he was grinning, torn between his own bashfulness and a small sense pride.]

Being peacekeeper is the real trick, especially when the two groups are bent on nothing less than fighting. But, I guess that's why they call you The Negotiator, huh?

[jedies]

That is the main reason, yes. I try to reach a favourable outcome for everyone and I do have a fair success rate.

Still, I find it admirable when people devote themselves to the natural sciences. I do believe there is a lot to learn there and it is a subject that benefits all living things.

[frogiturgy]

[Perell looked at him with notable surprise, before beaming like a goofball.]

You think so? I was just doing it because I like frogs!

[jedies]

A perfectly fine organism to like.

[frogiturgy]

You think so?

They're small, so not many people notice them without their song, but they're incredibly adaptive to their environment and circumstances.

On a research standpoint they're useful, too. Did you realize that they're usually the first organisms in an ecosystem to show observable differences and reactions to even small changes, like an increase in water acidity within a biome?
