Video: UN - Runeseeker (CW: Ink, Body-Horror, Partial Transform, Vomit)
[The sight that greeted the network in the middle of February was like something out of a horror show, though not one of those horrible B-Rated horror films. Vira-Lorr was there, practically covered in ink splotches, splattered over her face and clothes. One of her eyes was wrong, looking more like a squid's and half her face was terribly pale. She was leaning against the counter of her kitchen and oh god there was ink everywhere, along with copious amounts of slime. Her sleeve on the counter was shredded and ruined, and a lengthy tentacle arm jutted out from the remains of her clothes.
The sight of it was disturbing enough, but the look of elation on her face was so giddy, like she'd managed something impressive. Her eye went 'schunk' and she blinked, causing it to return to normal as she panted with visible effort, holding up a vial containing a black liquid triumphantly, like it was a magnificent prize to show off.]
Omni, record this for my records. I did it! I managed to do it! Oh gods, it was not pleasant, but I was able to get a usable sample! I...
oh gods... I just made...
[She twisted around, finding the nearest sink and proceeded to puke. Thankfully, she had the decency to put the vial somewhere safe. Give her a second. Another shunk, and her arm re-asserted itself, though perhaps not her pride this time.]
Oh gods, the things I do for research...
[Believe it or not? This actually had an academic and practical purpose. Somewhere. Somehow. Hopefully.]
WAIT.... WAS THAT LIVE?!?

no subject
faintly] Research purposes. You...must be very dedicated to your research.
[she didn't even know squids produced ink. and in a slightly stronger voice] May I ask how you plan to do that?
no subject
[Yup. This was her overly serious, disgusting new life. Some days she loved it. Today was not one of those days.]
I will probably make use of space with the Ministers so it can be done in a sanitized space instead of my kitchen next time. I am fairly sure they'll be willing to help out with this. And, at worst? Well, I'm sure I can find a way to pay for the space when I need it.
no subject
[that news helps settle Rose's stomach] I see! If it could be recreated, that would be a boon for everyone.
Then. Then let us hope they'll prove understanding and help.
no subject
And yes. If this can be done here, it might be one more assistance for some of the things we face. Every tool we can get is valuable. I do believe I will be able to get the ministers to help out. It shouldn't be too hard.
[She could bribe them with blood at the very least.]
no subject
May I ask what sorts of things you usually face. I've heard rumors of beasts, but people don't seem to want to give me many details because of when I'm from.
no subject
Beasts, sometimes curses that transform us temporarily, sometimes unpleasant experiences, sometimes one of the Pthumerians thinks we should learn a lesson, so they put us through a trial meant to teach us it. Usually, it tends to be much more unpleasant than educational.
I can give you ample details of ones we've encountered in Trench, but why on earth would they avoid giving you specifics? After all, if some shark infested by parasites crawled up on the coast on tentacles and tried to maul us, you should know how to defend yourself, shouldn't you?
...
Yes. That happened once. It was a very real example.
no subject
What possible use could there be for being turned into a beast? Unless it's supposed to be something out of a French fairytale teaching us that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder? But even that seems too sensible a lesson. Maybe "life is pain" would be more accurate? Not very sensible, not always true, and entirely nihilistic.
I'm from an earlier point in history than the vast amount of humans here. Far earlier in most cases. Ladies back in the olden days where I'm from were seen as being frail and fragile and prone to fainting at a moment's notice. Really it was because our corsets were laced up much too tightly.
no subject
Sadly, there is usually very little "Use" in these transformations or curses that we experience. Sometimes the Pthumerians seem to think they're teaching a lesson, but I'd argue that they are just amusing themselves. They're very strange creatures.
[...]
Ah... corsets. Lovely little torture devices. Did they use bone in your days? I've never been especially partial to them myself. [She smirked darkly.] I find women are at least as dangerous as men, when they put their mind to it. Moreso because of how much they're underestimated at times.
no subject
Ugh. That's what I'd been afraid of hearing and having it confirmed is no source of comfort. And it certainly seems as though they are. They're---I hesitate to use the word "gods" and even more to use "mutants," but. What are they? Exactly.
Yes, yes, they did use bone. Was bone used in your home, too? And I've never liked them, either, the first thing I did upon receiving my wardrobe from back home was to rid myself of the corset. Now I practically live in workman's denim. Mother would be horrified. [she smirks back] What is the old saying about it being better to be underestimated?
no subject
I should warn you? I have a love and fondness for terrible jokes. Little coping mechanism I picked up in the nightmare. That's perfect! And oh my no. My world favored free flowing garments that rarely had corsets. but when we did, they favored reed boning. Less restrictive.
[She did get a little more serious, though, at the talk of the Pthumerians. Those were ... complicated, to say the least.]
A "god" is simply someone who is worshiped by others. In a sense, if they have the ability to control an aspect of reality, to manage it and manipulate it, they are what some cultures consider a god to be. But? Just because they are that does not mean they are deserving of worship.
They are extremely powerful creatures of another planet, who possess control that revolves around some aspect of this world. Since it is her month? The Doorway presides over Doors and Entries, over Bonds and their breaking, relationships, marriages, and promises made and kept. She watches over and values those who remain honest, regardless of whether they are kind and cruel in it.
She isn't like Mariana who watches over the oceans and their secret depths, or Cynthia, who is the Moon's essence and power. But she has incredible power still. Not to be trifled with, but not necessarily to be trusted.
no subject
There are times when everyone needs a coping mechanism of some sort. Best that it be humor. And reed boning sounds far better. It still wouldn't keep them from being dreadful to get out of, but reed sounds less painful.
[she both knows and doesn't. they all seemed like something out of a story. and she listens in fascination]
I wonder, how did they find their way here? Was their own planet dying, maybe? Earth may be in rather shoddy shape right now, but it's likely better than other planets to inhabit. And I'd went to a bonding ceremony recently, it seemed like so much trust to grant another.
The ocean...frightens me a little. Not much, just a little.

[She made a grimace.]
She was, in truth, successful. The child's power, however, was too much for her and she could not control it. the situation left those who survived stranded in the world their queen had come to try and dominate. She, dead, and the child Julia dying, they were all trapped in her final nightmares.
I sometimes wonder if they understand remorse.
no subject
I must say. I'm grateful I didn't come in the time of nightmares. The ones I have while awake are harsh enough as it is. And now the child is dead, poor thing. She likely had no real chance.
...I hope so. Otherwise, we're in for a bit of trouble.
no subject
If she had a chance... Julia had it before we ever met her. [She sighed.] She was already basically dead when we were trapped.
Probably best to assume trouble. It's always a good policy here.
(CW: mass death event)
I'm sorry. It still must weigh heavy on the conscience. If not yours, than others who may see this.
Over the past forty-eight hours, not including my time here, I've endured nothing but trouble. [and love. but Jack, she keeps closely to her own heart, at least for now. and the horror of 1500 people going into the North Atlantic]
Re: (CW: mass death event)
still, there are better times.

What about spring? Does this place have spring?

It may not be like any spring we know however.
