Video ; username: shannaro | cw: talk about traumatic response
[ The feed comes on to show a pink haired girl, smiling warmly. She tucks her hair behind her ear before addressing everyone. ]
Hi. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Haruno Sakura and I've recently become a temporary resident of this place. It's come to my attention that I have some skills which might be put to good use here. First of all, I'm a medical ninja back home and I have an extensive knowledge of medicine, poison control, and emergency medical treatment. I think medicine works a little differently here than it does back home, but I'm happy to assist wherever I can.
The other thing I've noticed about this place and I know I'm calling attention to the obvious, is that it seems to enjoy dragging up and forcing it's residents to face their traumas. Either that or it's creating new traumatic experiences for people. I'm entirely too familiar with what happens when repeated traumatic events are dragged up over and over again for an individual. It breaks a person down mentally and physically and that manifests in some unique ways here.
People so often misunderstand trauma and they place blame on the sufferer, despite that it is born out of a need to protect oneself against very real threats to one's wellbeing. Back home I've been developing a model and treatment program that hopes to intervene before the behaviors of trauma become so self destructive that they harm the individual suffering from them, or those the individual may otherwise care about.
While I am sure that everyone here has developed coping skills of some sort, and that there are avenues that one might use to calm down or decompress, it never hurts to have more outlets and resources when dealing with mental health and trauma. So I'm hoping to utilize my knowledge and skills from back home to create a program that would offer further assistance in maintaining a healthy mental balance and perhaps even treat more severe trauma.
If there is an interest, not only would I like to create a safe space for people who suffering with mental health, but I'd also like to create a team of people who would be interested in learning how to professionally help others. While a base understanding of mental health is helpful, I've developed my program from the ground up and trained countless individuals in how to use it to benefit patients. So I can happily host workshops and seminars.
I just think that if we stand mentally at our strongest, then we'll be so much better prepared for the challenges that we consistently face. Treating trauma patients is a passion of mine and if I can help ease the burdens of anyone here while I am stuck in this limbo, I welcome the opportunity.

You're in the right place to chase your passions, I guess. [His voice is dull, but not completely lifeless.] Lots of trauma here to go around.
[He glances down, off camera, contemplative, though his expression is detached and a little glassy, there is the sense that he's trying to figure out how to mold thoughts to words. Some of the things she said hit him in a very deeply personal way, but he lacks the capacity to talk about it right now. His mouth twists as he gives up on it and settles on something easier:] …You've got your work cut out for you, huh.

Without a doubt. But I'm no coward to hard work. If anything it keeps my own head solidly on. Also, that's why I hope to train other interested individuals.
[ She recalls meeting him at the party, though they didn't get to talk for long. ] Looks like it's been a harder month for you.

I think you might be onto something - if the rising corruption in Sleepers is any indication... we really could use a place to help with what the time here throws at us.
[But he's fine. Totally fine.]

You as well.
I know I'm at a disadvantage without my resources from home, but I think there must be some way to help offset or treat these issues. Hopefully before they become bigger issues.

A few things, 1 welcome to Trench City! it's pretty great in a lot of ways but
2, you have some great points and
3, I'd like to help.
I've never been trained in this stuff or anything but I'm a good helper and if we can be honest (you're supposed to be honest with healers where I come from) I have some friends who aren't doing too hot. The thing is I feel kinda powerless to help them without knowing what I'm doing..
Do you accept part time? I'm a Nightwalker so this is kind of my job but I also direct theater and want to be able to still do that.
Thanks :)

I'd of course, accept any sort of assistance. Everyone has things they are passionate about and enjoy doing so I don't want to take away from that. Especially when I haven't been able to fully figure out the financial side of things.
I've heard some good things about Nightwalkers, but perhaps you could educate me as to what you do. That would help me to know how best to utilize your skills, and what you might already know.

What is a medical ninja? Do you throw syringes at people?
no subject
[ Now that's an image. She laughs at the thought. ]
Like a shuriken you mean?
Mmm, while I won't say I haven't been tempted to throw some needles at some of the more difficult patients, it's a bit more than that. Where I come from ninja are trained in a wide variety of things. Medicine is my specialty. Medical Ninja is a ninja who is trained in medical treatment and medical oriented jitsus using high levels of chakra control.

You are? That's wonderful! While I'm willing to do all I can, I know I'm limited in my reach if I'm the only one trained in these issues. I'd be so grateful to have another trained individual working with me.

Oh, hey. You're that guy, Sasuke, you're his friend, right? We were talking about improving stuff for the kids here, and he said you'd be the person who might actually get it done.
[ But... that isn't really why he's here. A beat. ]
So, what's trauma, anyway?
[ Like, he knows the word, but not in this context. ]
cw: mention of specific traumas
Sasuke. Yes, he's a dear friend of mine.
[ And it's true, she really loves improving the lives of children. She chuckles gently at the fact that he'd talk to someone about that. ]
It's actually where I began developing the mental health treatments I use. After the war back home, there were so many orphans and I saw an appalling lack of care and planning for their futures. Not only were we stuck with children who were confused, terrified, and grieving great loss, but children who had gone from having everything to having nothing. It's been my goal to ensure their future safety, but also their happiness. I believe we have to care for their wellbeing mentally and not just physically. So far we've had great success and if I can help the youth here as well, I will gladly offer everything I can.
As for trauma, I think the simplest way to put it is that it's a heightened emotional response to a terrifying event, such as war, natural disaster, death of a loved one, or rape. These events may leave mental wounds on a person that over time and without treatment fester into physical and emotional reactions that negatively impact a person's daily life, damaging everything from their relationships to their self worth. But it often times gets ignore because the wounds aren't visible. It's one thing fixing a broken leg, it's an entirely different thing to treat the mind, and it's a lot harder. We see someone behaving badly and we don't think "Oh, they are just trying to protect themselves", we think "why can't that person just get their act together." My goal is to look at why they are struggling and come up with solutions to heal the wounds on the minds to improve their quality of life.
Am I making any sense? Like I said, it's a complex matter, but I'm happy to answer any questions.

But first, she did have a question].
So you said you were looking for a team trained to help in those traumatic situations. Did you have an age cut off for someone trying to get trained as part of your team?
no subject
No, that's not a hard and fast rule. Back home its mainly medically trained professionals who happen to be adults, but the term adult changes so much from region to region. I began developing this treatment when I was only sixteen, and I've been doing what many might consider "adult" things since I was twelve years old. Age is so relative. Besides, there are so many benefits to youth obtaining this kind of training not only to help others but to learn about themselves.
I guess the simple thing I'm trying to say is that no, I don't have an age cut off. My hope is to train people and grow their skills and then help them use those skills in the best way possible for themselves and others.

I ... would be interested in learning. Even at my age, there's always room for improvement.
no subject
That's what I've been hearing. In fact, I was speaking to another individual who is a nightwalker and we were talking about how perhaps I could work with them and train them to expand their knowledge on how to look out for the signs of trauma. So maybe there will be a way to expand on their skills of emotional support to improve the treatment of those they see. I thought of it like a first line of defense against trauma. I may even set up a base of operations out of what was it...Cellar door? I was told to speak to a Madame Generosity.
I'd love to teach you, it's never too late to learn.

[He dreads to think how much trauma is brewing between all the Sleepers here. Far more than one person can handle that's to be sure. Though he suspects that's why she's offering help. ]
I'm gonna assume you'd want people to help out who aren't carrying a mass of trauma around themselves, too, huh? Those might be...thin on the ground.

I've heard similar things back home to. Where I come from, it's all cutting edge. Before I started to implement a mental health system in my village, our village's way of dealing with troubled youth was to isolate them and push the problems aside. It didn't erase the awful and for awhile after opening the box, the awful felt a bit overwhelming. But with the proper guidance and direction, healing happened. I've seen so much and watched so much suffering. The awful doesn't scare me, what happens when it gets ignored does.
As for people I'm looking for to help, to be honest, I think sometimes those that have seen such depths of pain offer the best help, but it is a balance between self care and knowledge of one's limitations. My goal is not just to train people to help others, but to teach people warning signs of their own limitations. So say at one point, one of our usually higher functioning workers who isn't prone to trauma attacks ends up dealing with the corruption. Maybe they are able to use the training to recognize their own limitations, or someone else who isn't having such a hard time can step up to assist them. That's the system I want to create. A safe space for everyone to learn about themselves, their own issues, and grow in knowledge so that they can help themselves and others. So no, at the end of the day, I'm not looking for people with perfect mental health records, those people simply don't exist. Not here. Not anywhere in my experience.
I hope that information helps. It's certainly a work in progress and I've no doubt got my work cut out for me, but considering I've rammed through all the roadblocks back home, I'm not afraid to ram through a few more here.

I'm a Night Walker, so this sort of falls under my purview, though I haven't any formal training in trauma relief. If I do volunteer, do you have any texts or lessons to improve my understanding?

I think my first step would be to write up a manual that could be used in a teaching setting, so everyone could have access to the information.
