( accidental video | un: duckling )

[ it's a dark and — well it's just a dark month and ahiru never really functions well in the dark. she gets spooked easily which is sort of what happens here. a sequence of events, by a duck.

1. she enters the kitchen. the lights are off and she bumps into various furniture. ]

Ow ow ow ow —

[ 2. her hand brushes against a coat hanging on top of a chair. in her mind, she imagines a snake.

3. She panics and lets out a loud: ]

Quack!

[ 4. ahiru ends up turning into a duck on screen. gasp! not that she has realized she's being recorded.

5. she quickly waddles off and there's the sound of water and she comes back into the kitchen with a relief. ]

— Phew that was clo . . . ooooose, O-Odette! Were you displaying this the whole time?! A-Ah!!

[ ahiru immediately runs in front of the feed, waving her hands frantically. ]

You didn't see that! There's nothing to see! It was . . . uh, uh, a MYSTERY DUCK that broke into the house but it's gone now!

[ alas, ahiru has been well and truly outed as . . . a duck. ]

[ oh it's a very cute duck, though! Kaneki smiles a little, although he understands wanting to hide what you are, being a duck isn't... so bad, not really. ]

Are you a human who can turn into a duck, or a duck who can turn into a human?

[ she sighs loudly. ahiru considers lying but what would be the point now? and she's never liked lying anyway. ]

I'm a duck . . . that can turn into a human.

[anthropophagite]

[ he nods softly ]

It must be...a bit weird, turning into a human like that.

[danserai]

[ huh. she thinks about it. ]

Not really? I've seen humans a lot so I knew some things about them.

[anthropophagite]

Seeing a human and turning into one is a bit different, no?

[danserai]

It is, but people aren't that . . . complicated?

[anthropophagite]

[ Ah. Well. A duck would probably think that. Kaneki would most likely think the same about ducks.

He smiles and nods a little ]

Hopefully it will continue to be easy, then.

[danserai]

No one seemed to mind or really notice, ehehe . . . so that's good? I think?

[anthropophagite]

I would say so. It means that you can live well as human too.

[danserai]

[ ahiru looks down for a moment. ]

Is that . . . really okay?

[anthropophagite]

You can transform into a human and you say living as human is easy for you then... You can choose how you want to live, right?

[ many people would love to have that option. Kaneki sure would]

[danserai]

[ her hand grasps her pendant, fingers clenched tightly. ]

I can choose for now. It won't last forever. Someday I'll go back to being a duck.

[anthropophagite]

Even here?

I mean, they have all sorts of magic in this place, right?

[danserai]

[ ahiru isn't sure and it shows. ]

I've never heard of any magic here that can turn me into a human.

[anthropophagite]

Hmm... [ a soft nod. He never hear dog it either, although he has been looking for it for a while now]

But you still have the ability do it in this place, so... Perhaps there is a way to extend that ability for longer.

I think it wouldn't hurt to try finding a solution if being human makes you happy.

[danserai]

[ conflict wars in her expression. ]

It does, but it also feels selfish.

[anthropophagite]

Selfish? Why?

[danserai]

Because I became a human to help someone. Not to . . . live this way.

[anthropophagite]

Can't it be both? If you helped that person... Can you not be happy now?

[danserai]

[ ahiru looks askance, pensive. ]

My part in the story is to help Mytho. After that, I'm supposed to . . . disappear.

[anthropophagite]

Why? [ Kaneki understands the feeling. He truly does.

But while Kaneki is very cruel to himself, he doesn't think others should feel like that themselves.

Softly:]

If you just disappear, won't Mytho feel sad? And won't you feel sad too?

[danserai]

[ she gives another nod, jerk as her eyes fill with tears. ]

I-I know. I don't want to make Mytho sad. I don't want to make anyone sad. B-But I still don't know what to do and I'm not really human. I'm just a duck.

[anthropophagite]

I know. But you know... I don't think you would know what to do even if you were human. [ even if she says being human is easy, it really is not]

I don't have an answer either.

But I think you deserve to be happy. [ she is just a little kid after all. Even if a duck]

[danserai]

[ that makes sense. it's not as though ahiru thinks she deserves the worst, but she struggles with her own self-esteem. ]

Everyone does.

[anthropophagite]

[ ah... yes. Of course ]
