( accidental video | un: duckling )

[ it's a dark and — well it's just a dark month and ahiru never really functions well in the dark. she gets spooked easily which is sort of what happens here. a sequence of events, by a duck.

1. she enters the kitchen. the lights are off and she bumps into various furniture. ]

Ow ow ow ow —

[ 2. her hand brushes against a coat hanging on top of a chair. in her mind, she imagines a snake.

3. She panics and lets out a loud: ]

Quack!

[ 4. ahiru ends up turning into a duck on screen. gasp! not that she has realized she's being recorded.

5. she quickly waddles off and there's the sound of water and she comes back into the kitchen with a relief. ]

— Phew that was clo . . . ooooose, O-Odette! Were you displaying this the whole time?! A-Ah!!

[ ahiru immediately runs in front of the feed, waving her hands frantically. ]

You didn't see that! There's nothing to see! It was . . . uh, uh, a MYSTERY DUCK that broke into the house but it's gone now!

[ alas, ahiru has been well and truly outed as . . . a duck. ]

Fakir cares but not about me, and not like that.

He'll think it's a waste of time.

When he got here, I remember he was specifically asking about a duck he wanted to be protected.

He knows I'm a duck.

Right. And he went out of his way to specifically make sure you weren't hurt.

Whatever that is, it means something.

I mean, Fakir is a good person. He seems hard, but he's very kind. I believe he'd do that for anyone.

But he had no reason to think you were here, Ahiru. He could have asked for anyone from his world. Rue or Mytho. He specifically was asking about a duck without even knowing if you wound up here or not.

You don't think that means he cares about what happens to you more than a little bit?

[ that's true. why didn't he ask for mytho? mytho would have been the first person . . . but he looked for her. ]

H-He probably thought I was messing up somewhere.

So you think his first thought was "hey, this duck is probably out screwing up something, let me go protect her?" I dunno Ahiru, sounds kinda like baloney to me.

I don't know what baloney has to do with it . . . Fakir thinks I mess up all the time!

It's an expression that means what you're saying is bunk!

Right, but he wasn't saying it in an annoyed way. He was genuinely worried someone might hurt you by mistake.

As if we'd let that happen.

[ for the first time, ahiru absorbs this properly. luz is smart. insightful. is it possible that she's right? ]

Should I . . . do something about that?

For now? No. You're his friend and he's still probably still struggling with his feelings! Just continue being your cute, adorable self, and you'll be all right.
