[When Luca comes onto the screen, it looks like he's been crying.]

So...um...I just wanted to let everyone know that Varian and Fern are gone. They...probably turned back into squids. Which...I mean, they're still together, so it's fine. They're fine. They're happy out there in the ocean, doing squid things, and really it's not like it's the first time I've realized I'm going to be separated from the people I care about, so...

[After all, when he went to school he was separated from Alberto and his family, expecting to not see them until the summer. Then he ended up here and realized he might very well never see them again. Still, having a feeling of loss strike him like this even in his new life when he's still longing for the people he loves from his previous one to show up...it hits him hard, and he looks like he might start crying again.]

So I'm fine, too.

[This is obviously a lie.]

Oh Luca, you'd love it there! There are so many different looking witches, all of them with their own wealth of knowledge, the demons are all also varied and different! You'd have made a great magic user for sure!

I really miss that place. But I don't hate this one either!

[When you didn't count the bad stuff every month, of course].

Oh, wow! That sounds amazing! I can see why you miss it! But...I agree. This place can be pretty nice, too.

[At least, when they weren't dealing with the new, bizarre realities that came with each new month.]

[Luca would have HATED Deerington for its lack of an oceanside view].

Wow, that sounds like a great idea! I can't wait to see what you paint. You know, Alberto Always liked to draw, too! He was a great artist.

[He's not, but Luca thinks he is and absolutely admires Alberto's drawing skills. Nostalgia for a time when he could actually hang out with Alberto and see his art is furthering his own bias.]

Wait, we're closer to water? What do you mean?

[Having never been to Deerington, he only compares the Trench to home, and since he's not aware of the Trench having gone through any major changes to move it closer to the ocean, he just doesn't know what she's talking about.]

No kidding? Aw, it's a shame he's not here! That way I could lend him some paints and he could make some really good stuff!

[Luz's own art dabbing started with her small drawings too, so she'd've been happy to help him get better]!

Deerington was nowhere near a water like Trench is. Besides, we're technically all attached to the water, right? If we die or if we leave, we're going through the water. We're all squids.

Yeah!

[Luca listens as she explains what the Trench was like.]

Well, I guess I'm just glad I never had to be in the Trench, then. I'd have hated that. But yeah, I guess we are all attached to the water when you put it like that.

[Look, it was a rough drawing, but it was imaginative]!

Deerington was bad for a lot of reasons, and that is one of them. The locals would have really made you feel out of place too, even I would have been not to their tastes.

Well, I guess I'm just really glad I'm not there. I had enough trouble getting comfortable with humans seeing what I really look like here. I don't know if I could have if it was like it was in Deerington.

It was actually much worse there if you can believe it. The people were less friendly and death was much more of a thing.

And some of the situations got pretty bad. I was almost eaten, but you know about that already.

Yeah...I mean, I guess almost getting eaten happens a lot here with people turning into beasts but that definitely sounds pretty bad. I'm glad I wasn't there. I wish you never had to be there.

Honestly, that would have bothered me less if it was a monster. The fact that it was actually people was the thing that really messed me up, never mind the torture.

[Gosh, maybe she hadn't mentioned this]?

If I hadn't been there, there are some pretty great people I wouldn't have met. So I don't regret that part!

Yeah...that makes sense. With a lot of the stuff here, they don't know what they're doing, they're just hungry. With people...it's different.

[With people they're doing it because they want to hurt people.]

Yeah, I'm glad you got to meet them! It just...would have been nice if you got to meet them somewhere better. But I guess that's not something we get to decide, huh?

It was. An animal will eat to eat. Those guys were having fun.

[And Luz would leave it at that, getting white as a sheet. She may not have liked what she did to them afterwards, but she absolutely did not have good memories of WHAT they did and how terrified she was of caves after that incident].

I agree, and also yeah, we wouldn't be brought somewhere if it was all just fun times, right? There'd have to be a catch. So either way, I think I'm fine it still happened.

Some things did make me a little stronger.

[Luca shudders at the thought of what they did to her, but says nothing more on it. Not only can he see the pallor of her face, but he can feel her terror at the memory. He doesn't want to make her keep dwelling on it.]

Yeah. But who knows? Maybe someday we will be snatched somewhere that's just fun. It could happen. But...in the mean time I guess this is still better than where you were before. And...I think I've gotten stronger through some of the stuff here, too.

[He's learned a lot from Reaper on how to survive ever since that Sleeper Farm incident, after all.]

[Luz would have loved to forget that memory, but also thought it was important to have it, if only to remind her that there would be times where she'd have to use every ounce of strength and desperation she had, even in the face of impossible odds].

That would be nice! Besides, there are times I just like being in the house with you guys, where we're just talking about how things were like in our worlds, or what we're doing now. We've all become a little different, being here together.

I think you have too! That'd be Reaper's influence, right?

Yeah, after some stuff that happened he decided to start training me, and we've been working on that ever since. Mostly focusing on making sure I can run away no matter what's in the way.

[Basically Reaper's teaching him parkour.]

Oh, good! That's a great thing he's teaching you!

Wait, to run away? Why does that sounds very un-Reaper like to me?

I mean, it's un-Reaper like to run away himself. It's very Reaper-like to not want me fighting something dangerous. He's teaching me self defense, too, but he's definitely focusing on me being able to move quickly and get over any terrain.

Oh, NOW I get what you're saying! So he's making sure that you can fight, but that you can also get away quickly!

Getting over terrain too! Very cool. If I didn't have a staff or the bird hat, I'd ask for that too. Luckily for me, running away is actually something I'm very good at.

[This is not an insult to herself, but a factual statement].

Right! I mean, it makes sense. It's good for me to know how to fight, but I don't think anyone here wants me to try fighting if there's another option.

[After all, Luca's still a kid and, while he's grown since he's gotten here, he's still very small. Sure, he might be able to be taught to fight, but it's probably safer for him to know how to escape first and foremost.]

Yeah, I was already good at running away, too. I mean, that's how I was able to avoid harpoons! But there's always room for more practice.

Right, of course not. Fights shouldn't be something we want to happen, but we DO want to be ready for them if they're needed.

[On Luz's end, leaning more about her magic was a good way to help other people too, particularly if they needed to escape. Even Luz wasn't above having to run away if the situation was impossible. Even Eda would have told her that].

Right, harpoons. Jeez, that would have been a nightmare to escape. I'm with you on that.

Right. And...uh...I don't think I'm really that good at fighting, so spitting at someone and running away is probably the best way for me to do things, anyway.

[Because Luca's pretty sure there's no amount of training that will make him feel confident that he can actually win a fight.]

Yeah, I get that. Man, I...I really hope things never get as bad as Deerington. That last month was nothing BUT running from monsters and doing my best not to get attacked. I'm really lucky I have Eda's Palisman.

Maybe...maybe you and Ahiru should start getting used to the Fathiers. I know they're HUGE and they're fast, but if you ever had to get out of here in a hurry, you'd be able to with them.

Oh, yeah. Me too. From what you've told me about that place, it was bad.

I guess I could. I mean, I'm pretty fast on my bike, but...riding the Fathiers could be fun, too. And they'd be good to escape on.

[And he does like going fast.]

Trust me, especially in the last month? It was a literal nightmare.

[Ok, it actually always WAS that, but he got what she meant without being technical about it].

The Fathiers are SUPER fast, Luca. I'm not joking. They can keep going for a long time if you don't give them commands to stop! And they can probably be out of Cassandra in ten minutes!
