See you at the Black Parade!

[Video opens up and its the Disaster house...isn't it? Or maybe its Halloween somehow making its way into the house. There are skeletons and zombie facsimiles all over the front of the house, ravens and colors of orange and black all over the top portion. Someone is very much using their ability to fly to make sure the house looks as complete as possible.

The backyard has a faux cemetery because of course it does, and currently putting up tombstones is one Luz Noceda, in a cat skull mask, and she waves to all of you].

Hey! Sooo...in light of getting back into my regular sleeping pattern, I learned that we have something like a certain festive holiday back home, except its all about hiding your face! There's folklore that reminds me a little of Samhain with the whole keeping away bad spirits, so I figure: why not get into the spirit, and meld that sentiment with Halloween from back home?

So over at the house I'll be doing my best to keep things creepy: eyeballs, fake blood, creepy music, the whole deal. Kinda helps with the ambiance, and so far? Nothing really bad has happened yet!

Granted, gotta keep it that way too! Part of this is for the fun, part is for, well, you never know? In case spooks around here aren't just made up.

[Look, she had a whole ordeal on a boat with dead bodies. Letting her naivete fool her is just dumb at this point].

Hope I see you guys getting into the spirit too! Do you all have a version of Halloween where you come from?

Halloween is pretty great. It's not the same when you're an adult though.

[Not that she is trying to put her off from that. It was just the truth for Laurel.]

Laurel Lance. [A smile.] Your first name means 'light' right? In Spanish? Tell me if I'm wrong.

Really? What's it like then?

[She's curious].

Laurel? Like the bush? Nice! And yes, it is! That was my first spell!

[Oh, why did she ask? There was usually a lot more partying involved.]

Well, you don't get to trick or treat and do fun stuff like that anymore.

[Laurel leaves out the partying bit.]

Yes, like the bush! I'm really glad I got the translation right. [A pause.] Wait, a spell?

What?! Then what's even the point??

[Seriously, what was]?

You did!

Oh, yeah, I did a light spell first! Did I forget to mention I'm an apprentice witch?

You know, I don't think I have an argument for that.

[This coming from a lawyer.]

Mh hm, you did leave out the part of being a witch. Kinda cool though. What else can you do?

I know when you get older you might not trick or treat or wear costumes, but then it just seems like you don't get to have as much fun with that holiday. Sounds pretty depressing to me.

[Luz had no intention of EVER being an adult than shunned either of those things].

Well, I have my staff with me usually, so people just assume I do something like that. But I can do some shielding, some item summoning, and I use other glyphs for other things: ice, plant and fire magic! I can actually use them even better with my staff, but I still do need the glyphs.

It is pretty depressing. But I make up for it at Christmas time, if that's any better.

[Good. Laurel actively encourages that for her. If she didn't have so many responsibilities, she'd probably do more fun Halloween activities.]

Wow. That's a lot of spells, even if I have no idea what a glyph is, but as long as you know, then it doesn't matter. Do you go to some kind of magic school for that sorta thing or is it self-taught?

Have fun then! I love both holidays for totally different reasons!

[Look, you couldn't cosplay at Christmas, it would always have that drawback].

Ok, so it's actually a really interesting situation. The magic I use, with glyphs, comes from the world that I stumbled into. Most other beings, they grow up with innate magic and they develop THAT at school. I'm the only one I know of in that world that uses glyphs. What I do is called "wild magic" and the practice of that is technically against the law.

[Laurel falls silent to listen to Luz's explanation about magic, an eyebrow going up when she reveals that it was against the law. She wasn't going to make any judgements on it because a) it wasn't her world and b) Laurel doesn't make a habit of berating teenagers.]

Okay, so if it's technically against the law, does that mean you have to learn it in secret?

Strangely, no one's really come after me yet, which has been pretty lucky, but I'm also not going around yelling about how different my magic is or trying to start classes, so I don't get bothered too much about it. Of course, I've spent the last eight months either in Trench or the town before it, so that's been less of a worry now.

Nope, now its just wondering what strange thing is going to happen to me this month.

You've been away from your world for that long? Must be difficult sometimes.

[She understands keeping secrets, having to hide her identity as the Black Canary back home. If anyone were to find out, she could put her friends and family in danger. Plus, she has a very public position.]

I've been told that this place can get a little strange by a few people already. How strange, I don't know yet, but if you've been here for some time, you probably have a good idea, right?

Not as much as you'd think. I miss my mom more than anything on Earth. It's the Boiling Isles, the place I wound up stumbling into, that I miss more. But its people I miss most of all.

[There were LOTS of people Luz missed, from Earth to the isles to Deerington. There was so much that it actually hurt to think about].

I've been here and the town before it, so yeah. I think the better question to ask is what's the strangest thing that ever happened to you?

I've got people back home that I miss too. But my sister is here, so at least I have her. I didn't expect to see her though.

[She is sympathetic though. If Luz ever wanted to talk about it, she would offer a listening ear.]

Uh, strangest thing to happen to me? [It's a good question.] I guess getting kidnapped and being held hostage by a serial killer was pretty strange. Obviously, I made it out okay.

Oh, that's great! I mean, not so much that you're both here, but definitely that you're both here together!

[Boy, she hoped that they were both ok. She'd have to check and make sure later].

Oh. Whoa. That is pretty bad! But um. Definitely expect things to get just as bad here. It might not be, but it might not NOT be, you know?

[What are you even talking about Luz]?

Yeah. We can look out for each other.

[Even though she knows Sara can take care of herself, Laurel is still going to be there for her.]

Someone else told me that things can be difficult here sometimes. But it’s okay, I’d rather know the truth, you know? Helps me be prepared.

[Laurel thinks she gets what she means.]

Maybe I'll catch you at the festival some day?

Great! It's always nice when someone from your world is here.

[Hehe...ah. Just ignore that small twinge of sadness on Luz's face that comes and goes].

I agree! I was told the truth about the world I arrived at pretty quickly, and it turned out to work well!

[Until it didn't but shhh].

Sure! I'll probably be there every day unless I'm having one of the migraine spells!

Oh no. I'm sorry that you've been having migraines. They really suck.

[She gives her a sympathetic look.]

Do you need any advice on how to deal with them? I can give you some.

[While Laurel didn't always get migraines, she knew how much they hurt.]

Yeah, they're not...great. Think it's another side effect.

[That was nice of her].

Oh, I know how to deal with them! I just...can't really have someone with vileblood around me ALL the time, you know?

Vileblood? I remember reading about the different blood types in the journal I found in my bag.

[One of the many weird things about this place.]

How can you tell what one you are? I haven't tried to find out yet.

Yup, they are a few blood types that live in our house, actually! Vile, cold, pale and dark!

Vilebloods are the ones that have the blood that are green and red and smells like flowers!

Okay. That's an interesting kind of blood, but the flower scent sounds nice.

If I prick my finger would that be enough blood to figure out what type I am?

The people I know are vile bloods are an interesting mix1

By the way, if your smells like milk, you have blood like mine and you're a pale blood!

Pale blood. Okay, I remember that one.

Now when you say milk, do you mean the kind that's went off or just like regular milk?

It also glows at night!

Regular milk. Glad it only smells like it or I'd be allergic to myself!

I'm glad for that too. Allergies aren't fun.
