[He was going to send this as anonymous, honest to gods, but then his omen walked over his Omni while he was getting a drink and sent this.]
So what is therapy exactly? Aside from 'talk to someone to make you feel better', I know that much.
What sort of books would one look for to find advice for doing therapy?
Is this even something I should be trying to do for someone?
[That last bit he'd been planning on taking out, but. Omens.]

Education usually takes years, much like a doctor.
You need to understand the underlying illnesses, theories around them, and avenues for treatment. It's not something you can pick up overnight.
I would not recommend trying it as an amateur.
no subject
[Ah, godsdamn it.]
A doctor is like a chirurgeon, yes?
I understand it's not something I can master, but... well. The person in question doesn't trust... close to anyone. I want to help them as best I can, but I don't think trying to refer them to someone else is going to be helpful for them.
no subject
Solid on the intention. Going to be hard to do in practice.
Are there any honest to goodness psychotherapists in Trench? Best case scenario is basically you as the interface through which someone else can provide the expertise. Bit clunky but could work. Especially if your potential patient could be okay with you getting help to help them.
no subject
I can offer empathy, especially if I see their past with one of my abilities. But that isn't something I have much control over.

closest i found from asking around are night walkers
theres some ones i spoke to. i can give you names
but its best to learn and get educated about first before trying after a few books. its about helping people learning better coping methods and how to look at their problems
no subject
I've been trying to work with them on that already. I don't think anything like this exists formally where I'm from.
Honestly I can think of a long list of people I know who need better coping methods.
no subject
i was looking up some stuff too. not for violence but given where we are and they deal with corruption i dont think theyre that unused to that
problem w/ most ppl is them admitting they need help

Like, all due respect, but do not do this.
You gotta get, like, a degree in it and a license to practice therapy, usually.
If you don't know how to do therapy right, best case scenario you have no effect. Worst case, you make 'em worse.
no subject
... Aside from Trench Worse.
But I want to be there for them and listen to them and try to help them. They're hurting and I want to help make things better. I don't think they'd trust most anyone with this. Best case scenario is that they try to kill the person they don't like.
I just don't want to leave a person who's so obviously hurting to just sit in their pain.
no subject
It's not your responsibility to be their therapist.
I get that you want to help, but if you don't already know what you're doing, you're gonna burn yourself out, and then we just have two people who need therapy.
You can still provide a whole bunch of help just by being someone they can talk to and all that, but you do Not have to take on the responsibility of their entire-ass mental health.

My dad was a psychiatrist
That's like
a medical doctor for mental health, in case they don't have those where you're from
Therapy was a big part of what he did. It's a whole process, and it can take a long time. Echoing what other people have said, legit therapy, like trying to treat someone's mental illness, is probably best for someone trained in that stuff specifically
It was a lot for my dad.
But I think generally just learning about mental health is good, more people probably should. Like basic psychology stuff, you could try reading up on books about that, to get a better understanding of basic terms and how certain things work. I learned some stuff from him too, I'd be happy to talk with you about it.
And I think it's really good of you to be there for someone and let them talk to you about things. If they feel safe around you enough to talk... that means a lot. Talking's pretty scary
Maybe it doesn't have to be like LEGIT therapy, but what you're doing still sounds like it could help
no subject
I know better than to try to step into a healer's territory unless absolutely needed.
Unfortunately I think it's needed and the person in question isn't likely to want to reveal their hurts to someone they don't know. I don't know if I can treat everything - or even anything - but I'm hoping that at least trying to get at some of their hurts and talk about them rather than repress them is going to be a good idea.
It's better than lashing out, anyway.
['Ironic for you to be saying that, now isn't it?' something in the back of his mind says. But he ignores it for the moment. It's right, but he's not the person who needs help right now.]
I just want to help them. I don't want to let them sit in their hurt alone.
no subject
I get it. In this place.... it's not like we have the luxury of having too many trained professionals for that kind of thing, right? We have to find ways to help people how we can. And so many of us are really fucking messed up
I could definitely help you find some books on psychology. It's broad, there's a lot to it, but I know my way around the different types, could pick out some basic stuff that could help you.
My dad also wrote a bunch of papers and stuff? I never thought to check and see if I could find them on the Omni here, but.... I could do that, too.
I'm sorry this person you know is hurting so much. And I know this place is the worst thing for people who already have a lot of shit going on inside. It's like Trench is designed to make all of that worse.

So she sure can't answer his questions, but there's something else she's focusing on here. ]

i am not entirely sure what this therapy thing is though
you make it sound like something that might be complicated to learn
maybe there is someone in this place who already knows how it works
?
maybe that person could help instead
unless the person you are trying to help only wants to be helped by you

Here's a different question - has this person indicated somehow that they want help?
no subject
But yes. They've specifically asked me to be their therapist. That's what got this train of thought going in the first place.
no subject
[Except - while he still doesn't have the educated terminology to explain why, what he's actually feeling is a startlingly big spike of concern for Nara'a. Some of that is the conversation he remembers from a while back about stepping out of the hero/chosen one mindset.]
I hope they're ultimately willing to let other people help, too. I'm kinda of concerned they know enough about therapy to use that term, but turned to someone they had to have known isn't a therapist. No offense.
[It reads to Ezra as possible what that person actually wants is...something else.]
If they get mad at you for asking around for help, my gut says they aren't being sincere. Or if they think are being sincere, they aren't as ready to do the work, as they think they are.
And that's coming from someone who's had some *major* trust issues, in the past. I do get that trust is an issue here. But, like, that's not entirely on you to fix.

[This was what happened when one came from a universe where there was no such thing as therapists available for those who had gone through immense trauma.]
I must ask though: does this person WANT to change or get something out of therapy?
no subject
I think they do. I think they do want to change. Or at least they don't want to be hurting as badly anymore.
no subject
I know how that can be. When you're in pain, sometimes you lash out at those around you because you don't know how to make it stop within. But pain doesn't work that way. You may spread it to others but that doesn't make your own decrease.
