Turning 21 has been a completely underrated experience. I was expecting the blackout and loss of time. Even the warping to a new place isn't out of the realm of estimated probability.

But being genetically altered is a plot twist. I assume it is so we can fuck the monsters.

I call dibs on the raven dude.

cw: looots of kink/fetish/nsfw jokes/conversation going on in this here post.

All right. You've convinced me.

How do I contact him?
justoscar: (warm)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-11 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Keep alert for anything that looks particularly troublesome on a regular day.

Or weirdly friendly crows.

Odds are that's Uncle Qrow.

Mysterious and thematic. I like him already.

Have you done this to him before?
justoscar: (door)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-12 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to, but they were already friends when I asked.

I'm hoping this works better. He needs someone fun who won't cause him too much drama, and you seem like someone who can do that.

[Someone fun who won't cause him too much drama, huh. At least if he's coming off that way he's doing a damned good job with his public persona.]

I've managed it before, I can do so again.

Do I tell him who sent me or leave him believing we met entirely by chance?

[Now you're just goofing off, Illarion.]
justoscar: (amazed)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-12 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oscar grinned-- suddenly struck with an idea.]

Let him think it's chance. He needs to believe he deserves some good luck too.

What's your name, anyway? Mine's Oscar.
unsheathedfromreality: (my companions in this escapade)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2021-12-12 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hmmm. A deception, but a very minor one--only misleading in where and when the luck happened.

It'll work. Besides, they've done all their scheming in the clear; this Qrow could find it if he wanted.
]

Very well. It will be done.

Do you have a picture or description of him to go with the signs of his arrival?

Well met, Oscar. My people don't burden others with our names when we first meet. You can give me a nickname if you need something to call me by.
justoscar: (musing)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-12 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[It was a strange reply, but Oscar could respect it. There had been plenty of times in his own world when he had wished for a little anonymity-- and he was glad to embrace a small degree of it here.]

I hardly know anything about you, except that you sound fun and are kinda mysterious. How does Mr. Mysterious sound to you?

Uncle Qrow is kinda hard to miss. He's got messy hair and his color is a dark red. He might have his scythe with him, though it might be a sword or a gun. It's called Harbinger, and it can change modes.

A lot of weapons back home can change modes, actually.

["Fun and kinda mysterious".

Well, that's an apt enough synopsis of one part of the shrike mystique. He'd take it.
]

Fitting. I'll take it.

You wrote his color like that's significant. Do colors mean something among your people?

Those would be a marvel back home. I'm sure the Core must have done something like that once but I don't know if any other artificers since have tried.
justoscar: (embarrassed)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-23 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[This tickled Oscar immensely. It was his first time giving a nickname and he felt like this was a good one.]

This if gonna sound cheesy, but the best way to explain it is that red is the color of Uncle Qrow's SOUL. After a country tried to ban all kinds of art in a global war a few generations ago, it's REALLY IMPORTANT.

I'm not sure what an Artificer is, but my sister Ruby can build weapons from scratch. She built her Crescent Rose, and she built my Hawthorn. She's super talented!

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2021-12-23 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Souls have colors in some places.

All right--Illarion can certainly accept that, if in others they're tangible objects and around Trench they're represented by an Omen.
]

How do you learn the color of your soul? What did banning art have to do with souls?

Like an Architect, here. Someone whose magecraft, or magic, has to do with crafting. Your sister sounds like she'd be one though I'm guessing that's not all she does.

[Given everything else she'd alluded to in their own, ongoing conversation.]
justoscar: (dork)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-23 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Just get hit hard enough.

No joke. That'll manifest our Aura and show our color. It's kind of our soul shield, and everyone has one on Tennant
Remnant.

People can do really cool things with Aura if they bother to train... It's complicated, but it's NOT magic.

That's something else.

Mantle-- and, later on, Atlas, banning art was a protective measure. We have creatures called Grimm that are drawn to strong emotion... And art IS emotion.

We can't live without our feelings.

Banning art was like banning someone's soul. That's probably why they lost the Great War. I mean, it's more than that... But Remnant's history doesn't really matter here.

Ruby builds things, but she's a licensed Huntress-- someone who fights the Grimm and protects people. She's so brilliant that she was able to get into the training academy two years before the required enrollment age!
unsheathedfromreality: (reflect on a thousand lifetimes)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2021-12-24 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
So it wouldn't work on someone with a soul from anywhere else.

[A minor disappointment. He's still exactly vain enough to want to know what color his soul is, and whether it clashes with the rest of his coloration.

No point in mooning around over that if it's not to be.

He listens to the rest of the abbreviated history lesson with interest. It shades further color into Atlas, which Ruby had mentioned; it comes as no surprise to him that they'd sacrifice so much for mere survival.

(We can't live without our feelings. That's uncomfortably personal.)
]

On the contrary, if it shaped you and your family, it matters here because you are here. How long ago was the Great War?

What is magic, if it isn't aura?

Remarkable.
[It may not come through in text but he means that earnestly.] She's your older sister or your younger?
justoscar: (?)

[personal profile] justoscar 2021-12-24 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if you're a Darkblood?

We don't know the limits of this world yet, but it feels like anything is possible.

[Darkbloods in particular seemed to have the world as their playground. The only limit they faced was their stamina and their own imagination.]

Like I said, the Great War was a few generations ago. But it was bad enough that cultures across Remnant name their children after colors... or names that sound like or invoke the IDEA of certain colors. Oscar, for example, is a weird kind of fish that's pretty distinct!

[Unknown to him was the fact that, in other worlds closer to Earth, there was likely a golden statue given as an award... called an Oscar.]

Magic is something ancient, that was lost when the first humans died off because of the Gods and their petty reasons. It's subject to fairy tales now... but some people might tell you that it still exists.

Warriors with Silver Eyes have unbelievable abilities, after all.

And yeah-- Ruby's my big sister. It's kind of a Found Family thing, but that makes it better. We're family because we chose to be, not because someone said that we share a bloodline.
unsheathedfromreality: (my companions in this escapade)

[personal profile] unsheathedfromreality 2022-01-02 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a Darkblood, but not that kind.

Or, I should say, I still don't know what kind I am. Though as you say, much is possible here.

[It didn't embarrass him to admit he hadn't figured that mystery out. Whatever his blood was doing for him aside from being a valuable trade good and rendering him part-alive remained inscrutable.

So long as all the abilities he'd brought with him continued to work (or not) exactly as they always had, it hadn't been a high priority. Blood magic as much as magecraft did require effort and study, and he didn't have that time (yet) to devote to the self-exploration.
]

Right. You'd said that. [Absorbing all this information by listening to the Omni dictate was not as good for his memory as being able to read it, but that had been out of the question to start.] What color is an Oscar?

Humans died off entirely? What did the gods do?
["Petty reasons". Esfir would be in a (playful) fit to hear something like that about anyone's gods. This should be interesting.]

How did you meet each other? And did the two of you jointly adopt your uncle? [The last's a little teasing; this...stirs something in him he can't identify, a heartsickness for home and family and custom. The notion of patchworking a family together is very orcish and very lovely in its way, but a shrike's context was his line and Illarion's was broken.

Had been broken, even before his death.

Right, don't mull on that. That's a quick route to corruption.

The gods kinda cursed a grieving woman with immortality for trying to bring her boyfriend back to life... and she then used that immortality to turn the world against each other so badly that humanity destroyed itself.

We came back from the Dust that was left behind.

[Why yes, Remnant's own history and mythos is horribly stupid once it's brought down to it's bare bones. Oscar knew all this-- but he had to live with it.]

That info isn't common knowledge back home, but my friends and I here aren't exactly ordinary by the standards there either.

We all met because we're trying to stop that woman who started all this in the first place. She can't die, but I think she's so desperate for an end that she's willing to destroy the world for it. Since we've got monsters that hunt us down for our great emotions, we're already in trouble anyway.

In situations like that, you end up making your own family. Families that you choose I think hold together better than ones you are born into. Not that blood isn't important, but choice< carries more weight.

Ruby's uncle is her uncle, though. Her family's a little messed up, and there's twins involved... but, again. It's choice. Uncle Qrow chose to be there as an uncle, so that's what he is.

To all of us.
