So...um...I just wanted to let everyone know that Varian and Fern are gone. They...probably turned back into squids. Which...I mean, they're still together, so it's fine. They're fine. They're happy out there in the ocean, doing squid things, and really it's not like it's the first time I've realized I'm going to be separated from the people I care about, so...

[After all, when he went to school he was separated from Alberto and his family, expecting to not see them until the summer. Then he ended up here and realized he might very well never see them again. Still, having a feeling of loss strike him like this even in his new life when he's still longing for the people he loves from his previous one to show up...it hits him hard, and he looks like he might start crying again.]

So I'm fine, too.

[This is obviously a lie.]

Gonna tell him he can use Varian's lab too. It wouldn't be right to have that place just collecting dust.

That would be great. Maybe I can help him out with stuff just like I'd help Varian! It was a great way to learn about different stuff.

Yeah, exactly! I'm sure he's like to have some help every once and a while, and think of all the cool tech he's seen! Just be sure to try and get as much background information that you can. That goes for the tech, and for Zib.

[She definitely could see he had some demons. Of course, they all did anyway, didn't they? But even the WAY demons manifested was complicated and very different].

Yeah! I will! And I'm sure even if I don't know a lot, it probably just helps to have someone else to hand you things!

...although I think it'll be easier to find out more about the information than Zib. But I'll at least keep an eye on him and make sure he's doing okay.

You do? That might depend on how much he wants to tell. Sometimes even that is harder than it is for other people.

Yeah. He doesn't seem like the type of person that wants to talk about himself, but when I've asked him about information on space and stuff he's happy to share that.

His past is complicated. Stuff like space and his work probably feel less complicated by comparison.

[And Luz knew personally that Zib's whole thing was much harder than he was letting on].

Yeah. But if he's more comfortable talking about space, I'm happy talking about that, anyway. Unless he says something that makes it seem like I really need answers about his personal life, I'm fine with waiting until he's ready.

[Basically, if something seems to be threatening to bring Zib closer to corruption, Luca's more likely to push for information much faster than if things seem reasonably okay.]

Oh sure, you don't have to press him about his personal life! That's my job!

[Luz already knew a little bit anyway, so she was very ready to make sure that Zib was still in a good headspace].

Definitely learn about this space stuff! I'm sure some of it are concepts even Varian didn't understand!

Yeah! I mean, Zib's actually been to space!

Yep, he has! That is super impressive!

I've only been to a demon dimension, but getting there was pretty quick!

A demon dimension? I've never heard of anything like that before, what was it like?

Well, way more monsters, though a lot of them are just making their way through the day, like we do. There's so many different shapes and sizes of demons, some practice magic and some are humanoid, some are more feral! Also, the currency is snails and the whole archipelago is built on the corpse of a titan!

[There was honestly so much about the isles she'd learned to love, but that stood out]!

Oh, wow...okay, having it all on top of a corpse is kind of creepy, but other than that it sounds amazing and I wish I could go there!

Honestly, you get used to it. I think it's actually the titan that grants people the ability to perform magic. It's actually really amazing to be there!

I miss it a lot sometimes.

Yeah...I wish there was someway we could go there. It really sounds amazing. I mean, this place is really nice, too, with the way no one here cares if you're a monster, but...it still sounds really nice. And interesting! And I'd love to learn how all the magic and all the stuff there works!

Oh Luca, you'd love it there! There are so many different looking witches, all of them with their own wealth of knowledge, the demons are all also varied and different! You'd have made a great magic user for sure!

I really miss that place. But I don't hate this one either!

[When you didn't count the bad stuff every month, of course].

Oh, wow! That sounds amazing! I can see why you miss it! But...I agree. This place can be pretty nice, too.

[At least, when they weren't dealing with the new, bizarre realities that came with each new month.]

There's no other place like it! You know, think I'll try to paint one day soon.

And we're closer to water, so that's really good!

[Luca would have HATED Deerington for its lack of an oceanside view].

Wow, that sounds like a great idea! I can't wait to see what you paint. You know, Alberto Always liked to draw, too! He was a great artist.

[He's not, but Luca thinks he is and absolutely admires Alberto's drawing skills. Nostalgia for a time when he could actually hang out with Alberto and see his art is furthering his own bias.]

Wait, we're closer to water? What do you mean?

[Having never been to Deerington, he only compares the Trench to home, and since he's not aware of the Trench having gone through any major changes to move it closer to the ocean, he just doesn't know what she's talking about.]

No kidding? Aw, it's a shame he's not here! That way I could lend him some paints and he could make some really good stuff!

[Luz's own art dabbing started with her small drawings too, so she'd've been happy to help him get better]!

Deerington was nowhere near a water like Trench is. Besides, we're technically all attached to the water, right? If we die or if we leave, we're going through the water. We're all squids.

Yeah!

[Luca listens as she explains what the Trench was like.]

Well, I guess I'm just glad I never had to be in the Trench, then. I'd have hated that. But yeah, I guess we are all attached to the water when you put it like that.

[Look, it was a rough drawing, but it was imaginative]!

Deerington was bad for a lot of reasons, and that is one of them. The locals would have really made you feel out of place too, even I would have been not to their tastes.

Well, I guess I'm just really glad I'm not there. I had enough trouble getting comfortable with humans seeing what I really look like here. I don't know if I could have if it was like it was in Deerington.

It was actually much worse there if you can believe it. The people were less friendly and death was much more of a thing.

And some of the situations got pretty bad. I was almost eaten, but you know about that already.
