Why hello there!

[Snow White is in her kitchen, which is really pretty standard. This time, however, she's not surrounded by food that is being jarred, pickled, or dried. Her army of animal friends is around her, per the norm. The more observant will notice that Snow has on an apron and has several stray bits of dough and mixing bowls around her.]

Several friends of mine have asked, and I thought, well, why not offer it to everyone!

I would like to offer baking and cooking lessons to everyone who might want them, oh not these friends mind you [Snow gestures to her animals.] they already know how to cook! [Because of course they do]! I can teach you the very basics, or if you'd like, much more advanced lessons as far as I'm able to!

I think everyone should be able to cook. I can teach you how to cook outdoors as well! It's very easy to start a fire once you know the steps.

The only ingredients we won't use are apples, but if there's anything else you've always wanted to learn, I'd be happy to try and help you!

[A songbird tweets something and she turns to look at them.] Hmm? Price? I haven't thought of one, I'm sure we can figure something out. [In that, it will be very likely Snow will ask for nothing in return because she does that.]

I'm so glad. Their species has been maligned since the dawn of time. No one can be as awful as their reputations insist. Especially not animals.

Snow, I would absolutely love to see you do so! I'd marry you on the spot! [was she joking? mostly. but she's recently discovered that bisexuality is a thing and, well. Snow is ridiculously beautiful]

Ovens and bathtubs and microwaves and dishwashers and laundry machines! How on Earth did we survive without them! They're so very convenient.

I know! The poor things! Really, they can't help that they eat what do they do! Same with wolves and bears and all my other predator friends. Although, owls seem to have only good reputations, so I'm not sure how they managed. They are very good animals, though.

[Snow White blushed deeply, her snow-white cheeks getting a bright bit of color.] Oh! Goodness! Well, I'm honored! You're lovely! [She giggled, not really taking it as anything more than a joke.] Well, he'll have to come here first, I suppose. And really, we're much luckier that he isn't, but you send him my way if you need it, Rose.

Terribly so! And it's so strange what is the same and what is different here. Like plague doctors! That was very surprising to still see!

And it's silly to be so scared of them. Once in finishing school, a snake got into the dormitories and you'd think a madman had been released among us. The others can't help what they eat, either. Even household dogs and cats need meat. And maybe because owls have somehow gotten the reputation of being wise? Otherwise, I don't know.

[and that's rather sweet. it's nice to talk to someone who doesn't seem to have an agenda other than being kind. and now it's her turn to blush] It's kind of you to say so! And I'll do that, I'm sure he'd be taught some manners in no time at all!

It is strange. I haven't ran into that much which reminds me of home, other than some people in Cellar Door dressing like they came from my era, corsets and all! They may be fun if they're not worn all the time.

Oh, they are wise! But every animal has their own sort of wisdom! Bluebirds, for example, love to sing when they're upset. And now I do, too. Bears will insist you enjoy every bite of food, you never know when times are lean. Things like that. But my goodness! Dormitories, how fun that must have been. Were there many of you at this school? What exactly were you finishing?

Well, if Grumpy can learn them, he certainly can. No one is as stubborn as Grumpy.

Some things remind me of home, the plague doctors like I said. But, the monsters, too, are not so dissimilar from what I'm used to, though they at least disappear within a month. Monsters back home were year-round. As for corsets, I don't mind them. [They were literally the only thing to wear in Snow's time so.] I'm much more excited about all the fabrics and colors.

That's a bit sad, though, to sing when one is upset. Unless the singing makes you both feel better about what's making you feel upset. And I'd never disobey a bear, they're far bigger than I am! And [how to put this since it was filled with back-stabbing future socialites, like she was expected to be] it was certainly different from home. And there were a great many of us, it was the best finishing school money could buy. As for what I was finishing...languages. How to manage household staff. Dancing. And being a perfect hostess for a future husband's society galas.

He'd better! If he wants life here to be something other than a misery.

My goodness. Monsters like the ones we have here, all the time? That must have been terribly frightening, never knowing when one would run into a monster. You're lucky not to mind them. [completely unaware of that fact] And I get excited about that, too, even though I'm living a much more simple life here.

Oh, singing does make me feel better. And really, there isn't much time to be upset, far too much work to get done most days! [And if Snow cries, it's not like anyone is there to comfort her. Though she's been very pleasantly surprised by everyone coming to help her here in Trench without a moment of hesitation.]

You learned to dance? [Snow's not really all THAT surprised by what else Rose learned because... yeah, that's not all that different from her own society. But better to focus on the positives.] You must be a wonderful dancer! I'd love to dance with you sometime.

Oh, it was really only frightening if you were a child, most of them are prone to eating children. Like the Nachtkrapp! Or Krampus!

I'm glad that singing makes you feel better, but [her voice grows a bit lower, softer] it's okay to turn to others when you're upset. Not your animal friends only, although I'm sure they'd be happy enough to help. But, people too. Like me. I'd be there for you.

Oh, yes. I took ballet for years, but it became clear that I'd grow to be both too tall and too busty to make for a real ballerina. But, I know the waltz, the cakewalk, the mazurka, and the racket. Not all were "suitable" for ladies of my station, but there was always one girl or another who'd teach the rest of us. And. I'd love to dance with you, too. It would be fun! [never mind her voice being a bit faint because the idea of dancing with Snow White is actually very appealing]

I'm afraid I've heard of neither of these beings! Nacht means night, but I can't put together the rest of it.

I like to sing for most things, when I'm upset, when I'm working, or when I'm happy, I can think of all sorts of occasions when music is the perfect thing to get you through something good or bad. [At the mention of being there for her, her eyes widened and she blushed, before smiling.] I'm very happy to have you there for me too, Rose.

Oh, you must be a beautiful dancer, though. I've never seen a ballet properly, but I would sometimes watch them perform for my mother in the shadows, and I always thought they were so graceful. I'm really not surprised you're a ballet dancer, Rose. Your movements are always so elegant! The only time I'd ever get to dance was on my own in the courtyard. I would watch all the courtly dances that happened in the great halls. Oh! But I did get to dance with a partner at least once, my dwarfs danced with me and taught me a new song!

It means Night Raven. The Nachtkrapp is a giant raven-like bird. It only hunts late at night and should it happen to see a child who is still up and out and about while it hunts, it will swoop down and pluck them up, flying them back to their nest where they then rend and eat the child limb to limb before tearing out the child's heart with its beak for the dessert of its meal! The only way to avoid it is to stay inside and go to bed when you're told.

It certainly can be. I know it can. [she remembers passing the Titanic's band as they played "Alexander's Ragtime Band," then the faint strains of "Nearer My God to Thee." if she never hears that song again, she'll be entirely pleased.

and Snow White's own blush made Rose blush in turn] Good. We'll help each other through all of this.

I tried? I was able to go en pointe before my teacher told Mother that I'd never have the correct stature for a ballerina. But, if I may? Why the shadows? [and Rose blushes] Thank you. It took a lot of practice, but I'm trying to have a little more fun and a little less propriety. But...better to dance by yourself. At least in such situations. There was always the chance of catching the eye of the wrong man. But, may I hear the song?

That sounds absolutely terrifying! The very idea! That's the sort of stories that will keep a child inside, that's true, but may also cause terrible nightmares. You weren't told those stories as a child, were you?

Well, would you like to go back to learning ballet here? I'm sure we could find an instructor!

[At the question about the shadows, Snow pressed her lips together.] Oh, well, I was never supposed to be seen, you see. My stepmother had ordered it that no one was to speak to me or help me in any way. And I was never supposed to be in such a place where nobility might see me in return. If they did, they would have to acknowledge me, which was the last thing my stepmother wanted. [And she was the princess regardless of how she was dressed.] But the ones who would get in trouble would be them.

Once when I was young, a stable boy once thanked me for helping settle a horse that had been spooked, he was thrown into the dungeons because of it... I'm... I'm not really sure what happened to him afterward, I never saw him again.

But yes, I could absolutely sing you the song, I don't mind!

Oh, I was told all sorts of stories about the monsters that would love to eat and kill me. They were the only stories my stepmother ever told me.

I'm not sure. It's been so many years since I was that girl who would study such a thing. I think it's best to keep myself to learning more and more about self-defense so that if anyone should need me, I can be there for them.

[oh, dear. that was a reaction she hadn't expected] Your stepmother, pardon me for saying, but she seems like a real piece of work. You were her daughter, you had the right to see and be seen, to talk with whomever you pleased, to do as you willed it. The same things any highborn woman wants to claim. [not that Rose herself always followed her own edict, but she wasn't afraid of showing Cal her distaste for him]

...oh. Oh, no. That's terrible! How could anyone be so cruel?

If...you would? I'd like that.

[and she thought her own mother was bad] Has anyone told you sweeter stories since you've been here?

Then perhaps you and I shall stick to the sort of dances where people can dance together, then you'll never have to dance alone.

I... well, I'm not really sure what I did wrong, what made her dislike me so. I think... I think deep down she must be terribly unhappy. And, if I didn't exist, maybe she might finally be happy. So that's why it is better if I am here. She might finally be happy, and maybe it's the first time she's ever felt it.

It's hard to say what made her that way. I think... something must have happened? I do wonder if I'm to blame.

No. OH! But, not that people haven't been very sweet. But why would anyone take time to tell me stories, after all?

Yes, absolutely. You're so beautiful that I'm sure you won't lack for dance partners. Though, we'll have to go somewhere other than Earworm, I went there once and they were playing the most awful music.

[and Rose feels tears threaten to spill] ...I'm so very sorry. That must have felt awful. And I'm sure it wasn't something you did to her, but none of that about if you didn't exist. You're a wonderful, kind, gentle person, the world needs more people like you. Not less.

Perhaps just because they want to? Stories can be a lot of fun when shared.

[Snow White blushes deeply at being called beautiful.] Why, thank you! But I much rather dance with people I know. Like you! I've not been to Earworm, but I trust your judgment, Rose.

[At the sight of Rose being near tears she puts on a gentle smile.] It's alright, Rose. I'm much safer here, so really, it's alright. And thank you... I... well, honestly, I most certainly didn't hear that very often back home. It's really very lovely to hear it every now and then. So, truly, thank you.

I do like them, at least, the nice ones. I especially like ones where people find their happily ever afters!

[Snow White's blush makes Rose blush as well] I'd be happy to dance with you. It sounds like it will be fun! And, thank you. I'm sure that occasionally, they must play something not awful, but it's impossible to know when.

[Rose chokes back her tears, smiling back] I'm glad. This place can be a sanctuary for a lot of us in need of a new home. Myself included. And any time you want to hear something nice, call me. Day or night. Would that be...acceptable?

So do I. Granted, I also like reading strictly to learn something new, but if I'm going to read for fun, I want the ending to be happy. There are far too many unhappy stories in reality.

Well, perhaps there can be a night where we request the music! I'm sure you know some wonderful songs!

Oh, that would be lovely! And if you ever want to hear how lovely you are in return, you can call on me too!

Exactly my thoughts! I've seen enough unhappiness, I much rather spend time on nice things!

I know a lot of ragtime! It's fun to dance to, even though Mother doesn't approve. But even the band on the--where I was from was playing ragtime for the rich and snooty, so she couldn't complain too much about it.

[and she feels herself blushing as red as her namesake] I will. Even though I don't hold a candle to you.

Yes, I think that's better than dwelling on the bad times. They may have their hands in making us who we are, but we're here. Not there.

Well, your mother isn't here to disapprove! [Neither is hers, for that matter.] So you can listen to it now as much as you like.

[Snow White blushes and giggles.] Goodness, Rose! The things you say! I don't think we should compare one another at all! Couldn't we both just be lovely together?

We are here, and here is our new home. So we should make the best of it.

You're right, she isn't! I'm free from her for keeps. [and so is Snow White] I wonder if they have any on our omnis? I know those are supposed to keep all of the old movies and TV shows, but I don't know about music.

[that blush is simultaneously beautiful and adorable] I think we can, yes. That would suit both of us nicely.

Mm-hmm and...part of me wants to stay here. I was going to have to rebuild my life back home under much harder circumstances. So why not stay here?

Well, no way to find out except to try! And we can watch movies together too! Have you seen these things called musicals, Rose? They're my favorite! There was this lovely one called Top Hat, oh it had so much dancing in it, it was splendid!

Well, I'm very glad I get to be a part of the life you're building, Rose. I have to rebuild my life too.

Yes, trying and failing is always better than being afraid to try at all. And I have, though that name isn't familiar to me. But I do love dancing. Perhaps we could watch it together?

So we'll keep each other aware of how we're doing? And how we can help one another?

I would like that very much. The couple in it, Fred and Ginger? Oh, they're incredible! They are so impressive! An American named Jerry, is going to London to star in a show, and while practicing in a hotel, he wakes Dale, that is, Ginger's character. She goes to yell at him for dancing her awake and he falls instantly in love with her.

But Dale mistakes Jerry for a married man of her friend! It has a happy ending though, and so much dancing! [Snow White ONLY watches movies with happy endings, she's LIVED enough unhappiness, thankyouverymuch.]

If you would like to, I might be a little bad at it, I must admit.

I'd love to see that. Dancing is so much fun, so to have a couple that's all about dancing would be wonderful. And there is something like love at first sight, I know there is.

Happy endings are the best. I can't bear unhappy endings, they're just so unsatisfying. [there were more than enough unhappy endings in the real world, unfortunately]

I may as well, so I suppose we're even? [she says with a smile]

I believe in love at first sight too. Before coming here, I even felt it, you know.

Oh yes, there are enough unhappy endings as it is, why insist on seeing more of them? [Same wavelength, these two.]

We can be bad at it together, then. [She giggles.]

Really? You'd fallen in love at first sight with someone? What were they like?

Absolutely! If I want an unhappy ending, all I have to do is look outside. I'd rather look inward and work my way to a happy ending. [very much so. and it makes Rose's heart go pitty-pat in response]

I never thought I'd be happy to be bad at something, but at least I'll be in excellent company.
