Why hello there!

[Snow White is in her kitchen, which is really pretty standard. This time, however, she's not surrounded by food that is being jarred, pickled, or dried. Her army of animal friends is around her, per the norm. The more observant will notice that Snow has on an apron and has several stray bits of dough and mixing bowls around her.]

Several friends of mine have asked, and I thought, well, why not offer it to everyone!

I would like to offer baking and cooking lessons to everyone who might want them, oh not these friends mind you [Snow gestures to her animals.] they already know how to cook! [Because of course they do]! I can teach you the very basics, or if you'd like, much more advanced lessons as far as I'm able to!

I think everyone should be able to cook. I can teach you how to cook outdoors as well! It's very easy to start a fire once you know the steps.

The only ingredients we won't use are apples, but if there's anything else you've always wanted to learn, I'd be happy to try and help you!

[A songbird tweets something and she turns to look at them.] Hmm? Price? I haven't thought of one, I'm sure we can figure something out. [In that, it will be very likely Snow will ask for nothing in return because she does that.]

Different tools? May I...have an example? And I love pasta, but Ca--I was discouraged from having it for fear that I would gain weight.

Thank you. I hope so, but it will be hard. This is something I've never had to do before, but I can't keep eating nothing but jelly sandwiches. And I should introduce myself, I'm Rose. Rose Dawson.

Oh yes! There are different baking pans, these lovely inventions called oven mitts which I didn't know about until coming here but I have these adorable ones that are yellow with red flowers, then there are different types of pots and pans, and then there are measuring cups and spoons! And that's just some of the things in the kitchen. But don't worry! We'll go nice and slow! And you certainly don't need all of the tools! We'll just work with small things.

And my goodness! I'm so sorry to hear you weren't allowed to eat pasta. I love pasta not as much as I love pies, but I suppose whoever told you not to eat pasta wouldn't want you to want pies either.

Just for that? I think your first dish should be a pasta dish! Or a cake! [She giggles.] In my kitchen, you can eat whatever you want, alright?

Oh, Rose! What a beautiful name! Well, it's lovely to meet you Rose, my name is Snow White!

[after taking in the first paragraph] ...there's even more than I thought to it. I assumed it was mainly pots or pans with perhaps a wooden spoon, but measuring cups? Oven mitts? I hate to admit that I already feel overwhelmed.

No, I'm sure he wouldn't. The most he would allow me to have for dessert was a poached pear. Which is nice, but they had these eclairs which looked positively divine. I never got to have one.

Really? [Rose giggles a little] I think you're right. I'm here, he isn't, it's a whole new start.

[the name takes her aback for a moment. after all, she's heard both fairy tales of Snow White, the one with the dwarfs and the one with Rose Red, but she feels she shouldn't bring either up] It's lovely to meet you, Snow White. How long have you been here?

Yes, it CAN feel a bit overwhelming, but don't worry! We won't rush things and we'll go at a pace that makes you feel comfortable. We'll start with pots and pans with the two most important ones ever. A good pot, and a frying pan. Those two things can help you make nearly everything!

Oh, he doesn't sound very nice! Well, now it's Rose's turn to allow herself whatever she likes!

This place was a whole new start for me as well. I came in August just after my stepmother poisoned me with an apple. [So yes, she's THAT Snow White.] I actually thought I was dead when I came here.

All right, that sounds more manageable. A pot for soup and a pan for...whatever is fried? Like, ah, fish? Fish are fried, aren't they?

It is. It's my time to live my life on my own terms, as much as possible. Though, I've heard that this place has its peculiarities.

[all right, it's not every day she stumbles into a situation like this. even fewer times does she run into a fairy tale heroine. she'll need a moment] I see! That sounds like a terrible situation to be in. Mothers--even stepmothers--are supposed to love their children and accept them. [issues with mothers? no, not her] I'm sorry that happened.

Well, a pot for soup, pasta, stews, boiling potatoes, and other vegetables, and then yes, a pan for searing and frying! And yes, you can certainly fry fish. We do have an abundance of them. Oh! And crab! I can teach you to boil crab if you like? It's messy to eat but delicious!

How wonderful! And how freeing! It's the same for me as well. Before coming to Trench, I had to follow very strict rules in the castle. My dear dwarfs were very kind, but it was their home I was staying in. This home is all mine and I decide the rules of it.

[At the mention of mothers supposed to be loving, she pauses, her smile falling for only a moment. She wouldn't know. She's never been loved by her mother, either of them. The first because of her misfortune of dying at childbirth, the second because... well, Snow never did know what she did wrong to upset her stepmother.]

Well, you seem like a very easy and wonderful person to love.

I never realized that a pot could do so much. I'm afraid I might seem overwhelmed at first, but I'm here. Part of being here involves cooking my own meals. And I love crab, I'm definitely interested in that.

It is. I'd already decided to go on my own back home, try building a life for myself outside of how I'd lived because I'd had to follow very strict rules back home, too. But we're here and we're far away from those who'd try to hold us back.

[Rose knew why her mother was so strict with her, dedicated to Rose's engagement to Cal. the money was gone and they were deep in debt. her mother saw marrying Cal as the answer to all of their problems]

So do you. It's good of you to offer cooking lessons to everyone. I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs them.

We'll start very simply, I promise, I won't go any faster than you feel ready for. I had to learn everything by myself too. So I know how this can feel like so much! But we'll build on your knowledge little by little!

Oh my! Well, you're so wonderfully brave! [Snow only set out on her own by force.] Well, besides food you've always wanted to eat, perhaps you should do something you've always wanted to as well! I always wanted a home of my own to feel safe in, and now I do!

And yes, that's very true! Quite a few have asked for all levels of lessons! I'm going to get to meet so many new people!

I suppose that's how anyone learns anything. Bit by bit, one piece at a time? And we will, we'll do just fine. I promise you that I'll do just fine.

I don't know if I'd call myself that. [Rose isn't sure how brave she was. She loved Jack and that had made her brave, but if they'd never met. she probably wouldn't gotten into a lifeboat, one way or another] That must be wonderful, to have a home that's yours. Yours and no one else's, yours and yours alone to report to.

You're sweet, so you deserve as many friends as possible. That seems clear.

You don't need to promise, I already knew you would. You seem like the very determined sort!

Oh, but you are! Don't you see? It's very hard to do what you did for many people! [And Snow doesn't even know the half of it!] Do you have a place to stay?

Thank you, I really do love meeting so many people.

[that made Rose chuckle] A little too determined according to some people.

I guess. I'd been unhappy for a long time, but some things made it all worse. [some things like Cal, who'd wanted to dictate her life] I do. It's a small flat, but I'm trying to find pretty things to trade and make it a little nicer.

So do I. There's nothing worse than being stuck in the same small group of people forever.

Oh, well that's not very kind of them to say! Well, no matter, hopefully, those people aren't here, and if they are, you really shouldn't listen to them.

What pretty things do you like? I'm partial to flowers myself! My animal friends bring me fresh flowers every week!

Oh, well, I suppose that was my situation before I met my dear dwarfs. The only person I knew was my stepmother.

No, it's not. But fortunately you're right, they aren't here to bother me anymore. They're all back home and with any luck, that's where they'll stay.

I love art, any kind of art, any style of art. Before I left, I'd bought a large number of original pieces, but those were all lost back home. And that's very kind of them. I've never heard of animals being able to do such a thing. [which made her Omen, Melody, a pretty canary peck lightly at her cheek] Yes, Melody, if you want to bring me flowers, I won't say no.

Really? That sounds terribly cramped, both physically and emotionally.

Oh! Oh if you like art, perhaps you could have some parts of your home carved! Or the walls painted! My dwarfs had practically every part of the home carved out. There's no finer craftsmanship than dwarven craftsmanship!

And that does seem to be the case, people seem so surprised by my animal friends! Oh! Is that your Omen? She's adorable! You called her Melody? What an absolutely lovely name! Hello there, Melody!

Oh, they seemed to manage alright, even though there were seven of them. Their cottage was the perfect size for them, and they were able to fit in me too! I admit, I still miss their chairs, they were adorable!

I'm fairly certain I wouldn't be able to carve, but painting sounds like something I could do. I've never done it before, but now that you mention it, I already have ideas for colors.

It is a little unlike anything I've heard of from home, but if the animals here are willing to help, that can only be a good thing. [and at Snow White's praise, Melody flutters down to perch on Rose's index finger, which she holds up. Melody is chirping something which sounds like "Alexander's Ragtime Band"] She's very cute! I'd wanted a canary since I was a girl and I thought that Melody was appropriate.

I can't imaging sharing a house with seven other people. There wasn't any crowding?

And who knows, maybe you'll discover you've had a knack for it all along! A secret mistress of the arts!

Oh! What an adorable little song she's singing! Melody is a perfect name. My Omen's name is Faramund. Oh! I suppose you should meet him since you'll be over. He never leaves my side!

Well, a little bit, but no, their cottage was the perfect size for all seven of them, even if I came along and change things a bit.

[she can't help smiling widely] Yes, of course! After all, one never knows until they try.

It's a popular song where I come from. And I thought so, although it's not that original. But she says she likes it. I'd love to meet Faramund, what does his name mean? [after all, names are important]

It must have been nice to have so much company. So many people to depend on. [she says with a note of yearning in her voice]

Faramund means "a traveler's protection" or journey and protection to be exact with "fara" meaning journey and "mund" meaning protector. Isn't that just lovely?

Oh, I know! I completely agree. [Snow White understands the yearning, she's ached for the same thing.] They protect each other through thick and thin! No one is more loyal than a dwarf once you earn it.

But you can start depending on me, if you like! I am to be your teacher, after all!

Yes, it is. I've never heard either of those words, though, which language do they come from?

[she misses Jack like no other. she'd like to think she's dealing with his loss, but for the most part, she's putting off the mourning. there's too much to do and learn for her to allow herself that luxury] Are any of them here? I hope so, there's a lot to get used to here.

I would really appreciate that, Snow White. And the reverse is true as well, you can count on me, too.

Oh, it's German! That's my native language. Would you like to learn it? I'm teaching it to Fern, currently.

No, I'm afraid not. But I know they would want me to be happy and safe and make as many new friends as I possibly could. I've never really gotten a chance to do... anything like that before them, before here.

Oh, I really like that, being able to count on someone else. That's such a lovely feeling!

--oh! That explains it. I can read German, but I can't carry on conversations in it or understand when it's been spoken to me. It's probably a good idea to do something about that, isn't it?

[and Rose can relate to not being able to make friends until a certain point. she knows the feeling all too well] I'd like to be your friend, if that's acceptable to you. I'm afraid I don't have much practice making friends, but again. I want to do something about it.

It is. Entirely underrated in the world I came from, but that serves to make it more valuable now that I'm away from it.

Oh, German is a beautiful language! I'd be happy to teach you how to speak it! And besides, you already have a head start with reading it, which means you know the hardest part, the grammar!

Oh, I would very much adore our being friends! I've not had much practice either when it comes to people. So we can figure it out together! I'm very glad to be your friend, Rose.

Then I'd be more than take lessons in that as well. [a pause] Where I'm from, women weren't encouraged to know things. As a result, I want to know as much as possible.

[and she smiles warmly] I'm so glad. It's always easier to understand things when it's two people working together than it is when it's one person working alone. So I think we'll be fast friends.

I think that's a wonderful decision! I hope you learn everything you possibly want to! I'm learning things as well. I was never a strong reader. [Having your education stopped dead in its tracks to make you a servant in the castle will do that to you.] So I'm learning how to be better at such things. I've gotten much better since I've been here!

They do say two heads are better than one! And if we can't figure things out, I'm sure we can always find someone who does.

I hope so, too. And if you like, I'm sure that Never Mind could arrange a reading tutor for you. I live in Gaze, so it's close to the school. [and having one's education disregarded in favor of earning one's Mrs. degree does that, too] I'm glad to hear that. This place is...odd. But it has its bright sides.

They are, especially when it comes to navigating new territory. Though, the idea of being tutored in friendship is rather cute.
