Um. I think I've learned how to use my Darkblood powers.

The only question now is how do I turn them off?!

Powers, I am afraid, don't come with an on-and-off switch. Even if that would be helpful. What you seek is control. You need to shore up your mental state, telekinesis usually responds to your emotions and what is going on in your mind at the time.

Okay...I used to be great at hiding my feelings back home, 'cause mom and Cassie came first, but I guess I've been kind of letting my guard down.

What do you do to shore up your mental state? I think I was being scatterbrained after getting out of, uh. My egg.

What I like to do is imagine a wall made of the hardest substance I can think of. In my universe that is kyber, though in your world it might be something else. Imagine a wall like that surrounding the source of your powers. That can help tamper down some of the worst effects.

Okay. Okay, that could work. In mine, diamonds are the hardest things. Not opaque, but really, really strong. I could try picturing a wall of diamonds?

Yes, picture them as a wall in your head surrounding the source of your power. You have to maintain a steady presence of thinking about it, for if your concentration lapses your powers will flare up again.

[The summoning of animals? The ability to make them float? The...Maria can't even tell what exactly that is on the bed so she'll stop there.]

And in what way do you wish to test them?

Well. I'm a Darkblood. As far as I know, I have the potential to, uh. Warp reality, induce hallucinations, and well. That. [she points to a journal and a pen floating nearby. fortunately the journal is kept shut by one of those little elastic bands] I was able to do reality-warping once, but that was out of panic, not 'cause I was trying to do it. This...this is brand new.

[She's still not used to how casually such things can be spoken of, but she'll keep that to herself. It's not anyone else's job to acclimate her.]

Have you tried focusing very, very hard?

[and Lexi feels like she's fallen into a comic book, where everyone can do something of some kind]

I guess I can give it a shot? [and she mutters under her breath, "stuff and batcats, please return to the, uh. surface]

Telekinesis, right? That was the first power I realized I had back home. [ for all that the discovery of her abilities had ruined her life, it had been a magical moment before it all crumbled down on her ] Maul's right: it's all about control. Mine can go haywire when I'm under a lot of stress or excited.

You might benefit from meditation. [ says the girl who definitely hates to meditate ]

Yeah. I'm a Darkblood, that's supposed to...come with the territory, I guess. And, um. How haywire?

[envisioning nightmare scenarios of all of her stuff floating to the top to the ceiling, then dropping en masse]

Like, yoga or Buddhist meditation?

Oh, just smashing shit. I've shattered a few photo frames and thrown things across a room without meaning to. You know, just telekinetic things. [ no biggie ]

Yeah, yoga might work if it helps you center yourself. I'm honestly awful at meditating, brains too active, but I've been working on it.

Oh. Jeez. Well, uh, lemme get started on trying to bring Mewnos and Nosferatmew down safely.

Okay. Batcats. Time to reenter earth orbit. [and the batcats slowly start sinking to the ground, Lexi reaching for the leashes to their harnesses as soon as they get close enough]

That's my problem, too. I'm, like. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop and planning ahead so it won't. [a pause] I tried pot all of once and instead of relaxing me, it kind of turned off my brain's filter and all of the awful came rushing in at once. Never again.

[ Yup, those are Darkblood powers, alright. Ange recognizes them the moment she sees them. Even if it's not the main way her own Darkblood powers manifested, she still figures it's got to be similar enough that the same things might work for the other. ]

You should start by taking a deep breath first. Right now.

[sure are! and Lexi experiences a moment of panic as Nosferatmew and Mewnos fly past again, completely without using their wings.

Yeah, you just have to keep going.

[ With the breathing, she means. ]

It's important to calm down first. If you try to fix stuff while you're still freaking out, you will probably just make it worse. [ Granted, it's not exactly garanteed..

.. but freaking out sure does help make it worse, in Ange's own experience. ]

You have to be calm first. Then you can think about fixing the situation.

[so she tries. slowly, she starts to relax and things go from hovering past her reach to within it. as soon as it does, she grabs a hold of the leashes for Nosferatmew and Mewnos and clings to them, the batcats starting to fly on their own]

I'm not thinking about the egg. I'm not thinking about the fact that I lost most of a month. Not thinking about any of that stuff, no.

I know, but I didn't want to impose. And there's this weird thing in my room. Here. [she jerks her thumb back to indicate the egg-like thing in the bed]

I know. I'm just so glad I can count on you.

It looks like something out of "Alien," doesn't it? Creepy.

Yeah, that's what I've been afraid of. But at least I now have Nosferatmew and Mewnos now far enough.

...well, uh. Volunteers for the other Darkblood stuff. Nothing too awful, worst I'd do was make you think you were in my high school. [a pause] Okay, my high school was pretty awful.
